By now, you’ve probably heard about the incident that took place at Bellator 187 on Nov. 10, 2017. In fact, you’ve probably heard about it multiple times.

To summarize it, McGregor, who was in attendance as a fan, essentially entered the cage after a bout between his SBG Ireland teammate Charlie Ward and John Redmond. Although he was trying to celebrate with Ward, McGregor created headlines when he appeared to shove referee Marc Goddard and slap a Bellator official.

The “Notorious” one has received quite a bit of criticism since the incident, and UFC lightweight contender Al Iaquinta feels as if he should’ve been ‘cold clocked’:

“Did you see what Conor McGregor just did? He took over Bellator and like went crazy.” Iaquinta told Chris Taylor of BJPenn.com in a recent interview. “It seems like that guy, I don’t know. I feel like somebody should have just cold clocked him and give him a wake up call, dude, you know.”

On the contrary, however, Iaquinta also feels as if McGregor has ‘made the most of his opportunities’, and if he wants to act like that, then ‘go right ahead’:

“But I mean, yeah, all the power to him I guess,” Iaquinta continued. “I would love to be the guy running around making a mockery of everybody, but hopefully I wouldn’t do that if I was in that power. I don’t know. If it’s good for him. F**k, why not? Do whatever you want. You’ve got enough money. If that’s how you wanna act, by all means, go right ahead. But yeah, I think he can do whatever he wants. I think he’s got the ball in his court as far as that goes. He doesn’t need to fight if he doesn’t want to. I think he’s made the most of his opportunities.”

As far as his fighting future goes, McGregor hasn’t competed since suffering a defeat to Floyd Mayweather in a boxing match last August. It’s expected that he’ll take on interim 155-pound champion Tony Ferguson in the near future, but he may also be subject to some sort of punishment regarding this situation.

Iaquinta, however, feels as if Ferguson is the ‘toughest fight for’ McGregor:

“He’s been very lucky in the match ups he’s gotten, but he’s had the skill to back up his talk,” Iaquinta said. “He’s gotten these opportunities and he’s had the skill to back it up. But, now I think he’s looking at guys like Tony Ferguson. I think that’s probably the toughest fight for him.”

What do you make of ‘Ragin’” Al’s comments?

Former UFC Champ Calls Conor McGregor ‘An Attention Whore’

As a former UFC welterweight champion and the only man to ever finish all-time great Georges St-Pierre with strikes, longtime veteran Matt Serra has never been one to hold back.

Now, megastar Conor McGregor is his target.

McGregor infamously jumped into the cage at Bellator 187 in Dublin last weekend after SBG teammate Charlie Ward scored a late first-round knockout. McGregor was admonished and bounced out of the cage by referee Marc Goddard, and the UFC lightweight champion responded by shoving the longtime referee and slapping a security guard in what amounted to be pure pandemonium.

The brash New Yorker was asked his thoughts about Conor McGregor’s antics at Bellator 187 last weekend, and in classic Serra fashion, let loose with the expletives:

“The point is this: He makes it about himself. He doesn’t make it about his friends. He’s not doing that to support his friends … Dude – you’re an attention whore. That’s not respectful to your fighter. And what about him jumping on the cage and smacking the official?

“If I did that, if anybody did that, they’d be called a (expletive) asshole. How does this guy get a pass? … He’s acting like a (expletive) asshole.”

“I just think it’s (expletive) silly that people are like, ‘Ahh, well, that’s Conor, he’s bigger than life!’ He’s allowed to smack somebody? Man, (expletive) that dude. I don’t give a (expletive).

Everyone from Goddard to McGregor’s fellow UFC fighters has chimed in with their thoughts on it, and McGregor did apologize for his actions, but the lasting impression of a crazed Conor McGregor going after innocent MMA officials has cast quite the shadow over the MMA world.

Do you agree with Serra in his assessment of the situation?

Conor McGregor’s ongoing beef with MMA referee Marc Goddard came to a boiling point at Bellator 187 in Dublin last weekend.

McGregor has faced quite the backlash following his outburst, and now Goddard himself has responded in detail to the madness after having a few days to think it over, issuing a lengthy statement on his Facebook page earlier today (via MMA Fighting):

“I was talking only to Charlie Ward at this point and you will see me put my arms between him and Conor McGregor, trying to separate and restore order to notify him to go back to his corner and continue the rest period, I was trying to communicate with Charlie Ward and then trying to tell Conor to leave, it wasn’t done yet.

“This is when Conor McGregor began firstly his verbal assault in my direction. My only thought at this point was to notify Charlie Ward, and his corner team, of my decision at the time and restore order to the fighting area. Also the condition of [John] Redmond and then subsequently bringing in the [doctor] in the rest period to make a determination. Of course the ensuing mêlée and confusion had completely prevented that from happening, that is the result of the actions of one man.”

The bad blood between McGregor and Goddard began back when the UFC lightweight champion was admonished by the referee for interfering cageside for his good friend and teammate Artem Lobov’s latest UFC loss to Artem Fili at October 28’s UFC Gdansk.

A bit of bad blood ensued, so when the famed MMA ref bounced him from the Bellator cage, he didn’t take too kindly to it.

With ABC President Mike Mazzulli saying McGregor will be sanctioned for the indiscretion and removed from his supposed main event at UFC 219, Goddard feels as if the incident is over, and nothing more should come of it.

“I do not wish for any further action to be taken against any party, in particular Conor McGregor, but ultimately that is entirely out of my hands, I hope that the situation can be reviewed, learned from on how we could prevent a repeat instance and then case closed, we move on for the good of the sport.”

Do you feel as if the issue has been blown out of proportion, or should McGregor truly be punished?

Conor McGregor made headlines this past weekend when he rushed the cage at Bellator 187 (Nov. 10, 2017) to celebrate a TKO victory for his SBG Ireland teammate Charlie Ward. After entering the cage, however, McGregor shoved referee Marc Goddard, while also appearing to slap a Bellator official.

Appearing on an edition of The 6 O’clock Show, McGregor’s longtime head coach John Kavanagh discussed the situation, saying that the “Notorious” one simply ‘got a bit emotional’:

“Charlie is one of Conor’s very close friends and he’s coming off two pretty devastating losses,” said Kavanagh on The 6 O’clock Show (Via MMAFighting.com).“He [Ward] lost fast and hard in both his UFC fights and was dropped by the UFC and then he fought on Bellator,” Kavanagh said. “So, when you’re seeing someone that you’re that close with, with two bad defeats and then has a great victory in front of his hometown crowd…he got a bit emotional, jumped in and he didn’t realize that the fight had no actually been called. He thought when he knocked the guy down it was over, but it was actually just the end of the round. The fight wasn’t over. The referee was trying to tell him that the fight was over. It was pretty obvious it was over, in his defense. He was a little bit over emotional there, but you sort of understand when you know his and Charlie’s relationship over the last number of years.”

Many have criticized McGregor for his actions, while others have begun to discuss possible consequences for the UFC lightweight champion, but Kavanagh made it a point to focus on the relationship between McGregor and Ward when speaking on what took place:

“It’s the personal relationship that the two of them share,” Kavanagh said. “It’s like soccer players when they score goals and you see them running around and then some will go like this. It’s funny because Conor wouldn’t even do that for his own victory. He gets more involved when it’s his teammates’, his friends’, victories.”

What do you make of the situation?

The UFC may have delivered a hard-hitting, under-the-radar event with last Saturday’s (Sat., November 11, 2017) UFC Fight Night 120 from Norfolk, Virginia, but the overall focus of the mixed martial arts (MMA) world was Conor McGregor’s all-out melee at Friday’s Bellator 187 from Dublin.

The UFC champion caused a chaotic scene when after teammate Charlie Ward beat fellow Irishman John Redmond, the MMA megastar rushed into the cage for an extremely aggressive celebration with Ward before shoving referee Marc Goddard and slapping a security guard.

Any potential punishment remains to be seen, but McGregor finally addressed the controversy (sort of) earlier today on Twitter before quickly deleting it. Check out his response courtesy of The MMA Bible here:

McGregor not surprisingly took a standoffish position in his brief reply, sticking to his stance that Goddard was trying to let the bout go on even though it was clear Redmond was badly hurt.

While that may be understandable, it was still an unnecessary and over-the-top reaction that could see McGregor suspended and fined. Considering the two athletic commissions he’s licensed in (Nevada and New York) didn’t oversee the bout in another country, don’t be surprised if he isn’t as well.
