Former Dana White’s Contender Series competitor Nick Newell has signed a one-fight contract with Bellator MMA.

Newell will be competing against Corey Browning at Bellator 225 on August 25. The fight goes down from the Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Bellator president Scott Coker expressed doubt about bringing in Newell in the past given he is a congenital amputee. However, his condition has never hindered “Notorious’” confidence (via MMA Junkie):

“My house is 10 minutes away from the arena,” Newell said. “I drive by that arena every day on my way to work and think, ‘Wow, it would be so awesome to fight there.’

“Finally this opportunity came and I had my team reach out to them and coming off the impressive win I just had. All things considered with my record and who I’ve beaten, they thought it was a good fit and they got me on the card.”

Newell is looking to put on a performance so impressive that Bellator inks him to a multi-fight deal. He knows he is an elite caliber fighter and believes his shot with Bellator gives him the best opportunities to showcase his skills:

“I know how good I am and I know I’m in the elite of the sport,” Newell said. “The guy I fought on Contender Series is undefeated and there’s so much unknown.

“When I fought Justin Gaethje he was unknown, but I gave him a better fight than two guys who are ranked top 10 in the world, and now he’s top five. I know where I stand and I know I’m elite and Bellator is the best place for me to show my skills.”

What do you think about Newell inking a one-fight deal with Bellator?

Things got fiesty during Michael Page and Richard Kiely’s Bellator Dublin staredown.

The two welterweights will collide on the Dublin main card on September 27. It will notably be Page’s first fight since suffering his first-ever professional defeat to Douglas Lima earlier this year.

Ahead of the fight, the two met for staredowns but Page showed little regard for his Irish opponent, instead, choosing to browse through his phone.

Kiely would decide to have fun with the moment by putting a thumbs up in front of Page’s face before standing in front of him. Page would pat him on his shoulder from behind which Kiely did not like as she swiped his hand away, leading to “MVP” shoving him. Security quickly came in between the two fighters afterwards.

You can watch the video below:

Kiely would take to Twitter shortly afterwards as he stated there would be no security when they step inside the cage:

Bellator Dublin takes place at the 3Arena and will be headlined by a bantamweight bout between James Gallagher and Cal Ellenor. Preceding the event is Bellator 227 which will be headlined by a lightweight bout between Benson Henderson and the debuting Myles Jury.

Are you excited for Page’s return?

Recently, Bellator MMA announced the matchups and participants for their 16-man Featherweight Grand Prix Tournament. If you haven’t seen those yet, check them out below:

Bellator 226 — September 7

  • Sam Sicilia vs. Pedro Carvalho
  • Daniel Straus vs. Derek Campos
  • Pat Curran vs. Adam Borics
  • Emmanuel Sanchez vs. Tywan Claxton

Bellator 228 — September 28

  • Patricio Freire vs. Juan Archuleta
  • A.J. McKee vs. Georgi Karakhanyan
  • Darrion Caldwell vs. Henry Corrales
  • Daniel Weichel vs. Saul Rogers

Many noticed that one of the promotion’s most notable names, Aaron Pico, was left off the tournament. Pico was hyped as a mixed martial arts (MMA) prodigy heading into his professional debut, only to be defeated under the Bellator banner via submission in 24 seconds.

Pico was able to regroup and embark on an impressive four-fight win streak, before getting knocked out by Henry Corrales at Bellator 214 in January. In his previous fight at Bellator 222, Pico was again defeated. This time in dynamic fashion at the hands of Ádám Borics via a flying knee.

After back-to-back vicious knockout losses, Bellator MMA President Scott Coker explained at a recent media day why he left Pico off the Featherweight Grand Prix (via MMA Junkie):

“With Aaron, we’re going to meet with his manager either this weekend or next week,” Coker said. “I always felt like after his last fight in New York, let’s take a beat back. He’s a great kid. We have a lot of respect for him. We think he’s going to still come back and be great, but I think it’s time to take a beat.

“Let him train and let him get through this process. He would be fighting as early as Sept. 7 in eight weeks coming off that fight in New York. I think he’ll be back, it’s just a matter of time.”

What do you think about Coker’s decision to leave Pico off the tournament? Do you think he made the right call?
