Usman Nurmagomedov

Rising Dagestani star, Usman Nurmagomedov, is reportedly set to take on Patricky ‘Pitbull’ Freire in a lightweight title fight at Bellator 288.

Usman Nurmagomedov is the younger cousin of all-time MMA great Khabib Nurmagomedov, who retired from the sport in 2020 with a perfect 29-0 record. Usman Nurmagomedov is set to follow in his kinsman’s footsteps, having already amassed an impressive 14-0 record, with four of these wins coming under the Bellator MMA banner. These wins have seen Usman move up the rankings, to the point where he now sits in the No.1 contender spot. However, it is worth noting that he is set to claim a victory over a currently ranked fighter.

According to a report via MMA Fight Universe, Usman Nurmagomedov is now set to take on the current Bellator MMA lightweight champion, Patricky ‘Pitbull’ Freire. The elder ‘Pitbull’ brother claimed 155lb gold in 2021, defeating Peter Queally in front of a hostile Irish crowd. He will now make his first title defense against the rising Dagestani prospect.

Tofiq Musayev will likely feel aggrieved that Usman Nurmagomedov was handed a title shot before he was

Many thought that it would be Tofiq Musayev who fought for the title next. The Azerbaijani recently made a successful Bellator debut, as he knocked out top contender Sindey Outlaw with a brutal right hook. Musayev also holds a victory over Patricky Freire, having picked up a decision win against the Brazilian veteran at Rizin 20.

It seems likely that Musayev will now face the winner of Patricky Freire vs. Usman Nurmagomedov.

During her appearance on ‘The MMA Hour‘ with Ariel Helwani, Cyborg revealed that she will face Simone Silva in her boxing debut at FMS (Fight Music Show) at the Athletico Paranaense Arena in Curitiba, Brazil, the same arena that Cyborg made her UFC debut back in 2016. Cyborg also confirmed that she will continue to work with Bellator and plans to defend her featherweight championship next summer.

“I’m still a Bellator champion,” Cyborg said. “I have a great relationship with Bellator. I believe I’m going to do this boxing fight and I look forward to defending my title (next) summer.”

Cris Cyborg last defended her Bellator crown in April against challenger Arlene Blencowe. The unanimous decision victory extended Cyborg’s streak to six. The women’s MMA legend has not lost a bout since facing Amanda Nunes at UFC 232.

Cris Cyborg Faces Former Brazilian Boxing National Champion in Her Squared Circle Debut

In her professional boxing debut, Cris Cyborg will meet decorated former Brazilian national world champion Simone Silva. In a press release for the event, Cyborg said this of her opponent:

“Simone Silva is a former Brazilian national boxing champion who has boxed all over the world against some of the sport’s best female world champions while representing Brazil on the global stage,” Cyborg said. “She has fought for a world championship in boxing four different times during her career and is a proven and durable veteran who is going to be a real challenge for my first experience inside of the boxing ring. I am excited to challenge myself in a completely different sport and see where my potential in boxing measures.”

Silva boasts a career record of 17-21. She has six victories by way of knockout but is currently riding an eight-fight losing streak that began in 2019.

Also scheduled to appear on the card is the son of combat sports legend Wanderlei Silva. Thor Silva makes his mixed martial arts debut against Paulo Rangel. Former boxing champion Acelino Popo is scheduled to meet MMA legend Jose “Pele” Landi-Jons.

Wanderlei Silva

Mixed martial arts legend Wanderlei Silva has officially confirmed he will plunge into the world of Brazilian politics.

The former Pride FC champion and veteran of the UFC and Bellator announced his goal to run for a seat in the Brazilian congress as a federal deputy via Instagram. The 50-fight vet is set to align himself with the Progressive Party, supporting Brazil’s current far-right president Jair Bolsonaro.

Having fought for his native homeland inside the Octagon, Silva now looks to continue fighting for his country in a different role.

Wanderlei Silva Statement

It’s now official: I’m a candidate for Federal Deputy!

I made this decision because a lot of people complain about our country, a lot of people say that here nothing goes right, that nothing works.

To change this scenario, I’m making myself available as a candidate for Federal Deputy for Paraná.

Our State has never had a good-name athlete representing us, and I want to be that person.

I want to come to Brasília and bring dignity to our sport, work to make it a strong instrument of social inclusion.

I am proof of what sport can do for the young, and I know we can change the life of many.

Besides sports, I will fight for strong, efficient public safety that values its professionals.

I count on you, always count on me,” Silva wrote on social media.

Silva ended his respectable MMA career holding an imposing (35-14-1) record. The 46-year-old hasn’t competed since 2018 after undergoing a stint in Bellator and losing both bouts against Chael Sonnen and Quinton Jackson.

With Wanderlei Silva leaving his fighting career behind him and transitioning into the world of politics, what do you think about the switch? Let us know in the comments!
