UFC welterweight Gilbert Burns wants a crack at Ben Askren after his UFC Singapore loss to Demian Maia. Earlier today, Askren suffered a third-round submission loss to Maia where he was rendered unconscious.

Now, Maia is on a two-fight losing streak, no longer undefeated, and at 35-years-old, his championship window seems to be closing. Many believe Askren could be considering retirement after back-to-back losses to Maia and Jorge Masvidal. Burns took to Twitter after UFC Singapore to ask UFC president Dana White to allow him to “finish the job,” and fight Askren next.

“Uncle @danawhite please don’t cut @Benaskren after all these losses. I know he looked bad… actually terrible, but Please give him 1 more shot! And let me finish the job. Ben let’s do this now otherwise you’ll get cut n I won’t do the grappling superfight u keep begging me for.”

Burns is one of the better grapplers at 170 pounds himself. A matchup between the Brazilian and Askren would certainly be an entertaining ground fight. Burns is currently on a four-fight win streak, and comes off of a big unanimous decision victory over Gunnar Nelson in Denmark.

What do you think about a potential fight between Burns and Askren?

Earlier today (Sat. October 26, 2019) Demian Maia bested Ben Askren in the UFC Singapore main event. Maia submitted “Funky” in the third round of their grappling affair. It was a big setback for Askren, who was hoping to get in the title hunt after making his UFC debut earlier this year.

Now, on a two-fight losing streak, no longer undefeated, and 35-years-old, Askren’s window appears to be closing quickly. Askren’s teammate and UFC on ESPN analyst, Tyron Woodley, offered his thoughts on his training partner’s performance after the bout. Woodley explained what he thinks Askren could’ve done to have seen more success against Maia. (H/T MMA News)

“The thing about Ben, when I was looking down there yelling and screaming, if he would’ve thrown overhand rights and got his head off-line he would’ve been able to access the right leg of Demian Maia,” Woodley said.

“If he would’ve thrown that shovel uppercut and got his head off-line, he would’ve avoided those punches, he would’ve got close to the front leg which from a southpaw is gonna be his right leg. Getting to the back leg of Demian Maia is very difficult and when you go back there it’s a huge risk that you have to take, and I think that when you go for it with your head down and you’re trying to go for those strikes you put yourself in jeopardy.”

Woodley also explained that Askren might have been a bit overconfident in his ability to escape Maia’s submission attempt in the finishing sequence.

“As I said before, Ben likes to put himself in harm’s way because he knows he’s confident in getting out of it,” Woodley said. “This time he didn’t get out of it. I think he’ll go back home, I think he’ll look at the film and I think he can get back on the horse.”

What do you make of Woodley’s comments regarding Askren’s loss to Maia?

Earlier today (Sat. October 26, 2019) Demian Maia and Ben Askren met in a grappling showdown in the main event of UFC Singapore. It was a phenomenal affair between the two ground fighters, who got their respective shots in on the feet as well.

After some crazy scrambles, Maia was able to lock up a deep rear-naked choke in the third round. Askren was rendered unconscious, awarding Maia the victory. After his defeat, Askren has taken to Twitter to comment on the loss, apologizing to those he let down.

“Made a bad decision and I failed. Sorry to everyone who I let down.”

This is the second and only loss of Askren’s mixed martial arts (MMA) career. It’s also the second loss of his three-fight run with the UFC. Askren bested Robbie Lawler earlier this year to win his UFC debut, winning via controversial first-round submission by way of a bulldog choke. He then faced Jorge Masvidal in July, where he was the victim of the fastest knockout in UFC history at five seconds.

“Gamebred” caught Askren shooting in on a takedown with a flying knee. Now, after his submission loss to Maia, it remains unclear what the future holds for “Funky.” He did not confirm whether or not he would fight again, noting he has to talk with his family before making the decision.
