Anderson Silva made his return to the sport of boxing, gracing the ring for the first time since 2005, against Julio Cesar Chavez on June 19, 2021. Although he came into the fight as a hefty underdog, touting a +500 betting line, he ended as the victor and successfully upset the former WBC middleweight champion. Silva, with just three professional boxing matches, now owns a record of 2-1 in the sport. He has lost his last three bouts for the UFC, being without a win since February of 2017.

And of course, with notoriety behind Silva’s name a successful boxing match to boot, Jake Paul decided to chime in and share his thoughts.

“Anderson’s 46 years old, and I thought he did an incredible job,” Paul told TMZ. He was sticking and moving, bouncing around the ring, having fun, was throwing combos. He’s long and lanky and to come in there and beat Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., who’s what, 50? Wins in the ring, is a world champion … this just goes to show that MMA strikers are also great boxers, and I think a lot of people forget that. That is the first skill that MMA fighters learn if they’re going to learn how to fight, is boxing. So I thought he looked amazing.”

Paul is usually not one to applaud the performance of a mixed martial artist, being that he has boxed one and has another upcoming. However, after Silva won, Paul publicly shared this newly found sentiment that MMA fighters can box and strike successfully even when crossing sports.

Paul’s next bout is scheduled for August 28th on PPV against former UFC champion Tyron Woodley. This sparked attention during the pre-fight of Paul vs. Ben Askren and has now come to life for public consumption.

If Jake Paul is correct, will Woodley uphold the virtue that Anderson Silva sparked being that MMA fighters can transfer their striking skills to boxing and leave the ring victorious?

Ken Shamrock Interested In Mike Tyson Match-Up

John Fury Ken Shamrock Mike Tyson Boxing Match Up

With Mike Tyson’s signing his recent training video off with “I’m back”, many began to speculate about whether or not the former youngest boxing heavyweight champion in history’ would be making a return to the ring. The potential comeback not only drew interest from the former boxer and bare-knuckle fighter John Fur and long-time rival Evander Holyfield but also former UFC and Bellator heavyweight Ken Shamrock.

In an interview with Fight Network, Shamrock was asked if Mike Tyson’s comeback speculation had influenced a potential Shamrock comeback to which Shamrock responded with “I’m always hungry to fight”. (H/T Bjpenn)

“That’s in my DNA. I love doing it, I’ve always loved doing it. At the same time I’ve also got to be smart too, and understand that it has to be something that makes sense if I’m going to get in the ring. I’m not going to fight some 27-year-old in his prime. It would be ridiculous for me to do that” Shamrock said.

“But if something made sense, I would do it, I love competing, I’ve always loved competing. Someone like Mike Tyson would be a perfect fight for me, because it’s something I love doing.”

“I love competing and I love competing against the best, so it’d be a perfect scenario for me.” With Shamrock being 56 years old and Tyson being 53, could this potential match-up be enough to draw the two out of an early retirement?

With the Mayweather v McGregor fight being such a huge success, it is hard to argue that the idea of ‘Iron Mike’ Tyson vs Ken Shamrock wouldn’t attract fans of both sports, especially with both heavyweights finishing their careers with losses offering redemption to both.

Would a Mike Tyson and Ken Shamrock fight be one you’d like to see?

MMA Fighters vs Boxers: Who Makes More Money?

UFC popularity has soared over the last ten years, helped by deals with TV broadcasters like ESPN. The increase in viewership has leveraged somewhat of a rivalry between boxing and MMA fans, although many like to tune into both types of fighting events. That rivalry came toe to toe when Mayweather faced MMA star McGregor in 2018, in what was known as a billion-dollar fight. Interestingly, Mayweather has teased of a rematch. The money involved was astronomical, and it makes us question, which type of professional fighter earns the most?

First, Where Does the Money Come From?

Both sports are incredibly wealthy, with money coming from an array of different avenues. For these fighters to get paid big money, the people who arrange the fights need to accumulate even more wealth. After all, fighting is a business and the companies at the top want big profits just as much as the athletes.

There is, of course, TV rights which make up a significant percentage of fighting revenue. Big fights are usually held in well-known locations such as Las Vegas and broadcast to millions around the world who have to pay a one-off fee to view the contest. This means there are also tickets to be sold with those closest to the action paying thousands of dollars to watch the blood and sweat up close.

The other primary form of revenues come from promoting products and sponsorship, and in fighting sports, the latter usually comes from sports brands or gambling companies. There is a natural connection between gambling and sports as most fans like to bet on fights – and get a second bout of adrenaline through betting on the games before the first blow lands.

So, Who Makes More Money?

The facts and figures from both sources suggest that boxers make significantly more money than UFC fighters. Even if you look beyond the outliers at the top of each sport, such as people like Mayweather and McGregor, further down the order boxers still take home bigger salaries. An MMA fighter like Cormier earned less than $2 million in a year, whereas an equivalent level boxer like Golovkin earned around 12 times that amount in a year. Although it is important to remember that the UFC is relatively new compared to boxing.

But Do Most Fighters Really Make Big Money?

The flashy lifestyles, fast cars and own alcohol brands may look like reality from the outside, but for the masses of professional fighters, this is never the case. Business Insider has reported that only 19 out of every 21,000 fighters will make big money from their sport. This means the odds are not in any fighter’s favour to become rich from fighting. The report goes on to say that most fighters in the UK will make post-tax profits less than £20,000. This means fighting for many people means earning less than the average income of any professional industry.

Of course, some fighters will fight in million – or billion – dollar fights in USA’s Nevada desert playground. Yet, it is rare that any fighter will make it to the big time.

Canelo Alvarez Calls Out Conor McGregor For Boxing Match

UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor has done a great job of putting his name in everyone’s mouths. First the Irish star became hot property in mixed martial arts. UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor has done a great job of putting his name in everyone’s mouths. First the Irish star became hot property in mixed martial arts. After a successful UFC debut in 2013, ‘The Notorious’ put the entire 145-pound division on blast. Calling out Jose Aldo from his very first fight, McGregor vowed to dethrone the long-reigning Brazilian, but few believed him at that stage. Following five more fights, McGregor stood opposite ‘Scarface’ at UFC 194.

As McGregor had predicted, Aldo fell from the first clean strike. The only ever UFC champion to that point had been demolished in 13 seconds. The next sequence of events would keep the Irishman away from the featherweight division and yet to defend the belt to this day. Originally meant to face Rafael dos Anjos at UFC 196, McGregor instead fought Nate Diaz. The Stockton bad boy rocked the boat in a big way, defeating the UFC’s biggest star by submission.

McGregor would remain at welterweight for the immediate rematch with Diaz, but not before a drawn out period of drama. After neglecting to attend the UFC 200 press conference, the Irish striker was dropped from the main event and fell in to a feud against the promotion. This in turn led to a somewhat theatrical beef with boxing great Floyd Mayweather.

Since he became the flavour of the month in the boxing world, ‘The notorious’ got in to it with the stars of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). Once again proving his reach has no bounds, McGregor was making front page news with 10-word statements about pro wrestling. His saga in the boxing world is far from over though. After his UFC 202 victory over Diaz, former WBC middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez piped up.

Canelo-McGregor

McGregor vs. Canelo

McGregor had first mentioned Canelo when the Mexican boxer vacated the WBC title. Choosing to drop one pound to face Liam Smith instead of Gennady Golovkin, Canelo took some flack from McGregor for ‘cherry picking.’ The decision has indeed caused controversy among boxing fans, and after UFC 202 Alvarez blasted ‘The Notorious’ for having poor cardio.

Taking it one step further during a recent interview with Fight Hub TV, as quoted by MMAMania, Alvarez issued a straight challenge to McGregor:

“If he wants to try out boxing, then anytime he wants. If he wants to come over to this side of the world and try boxing, anytime he wants, to see that it’s not as easy as he thinks.”

Former world boxing champion Amir Khan made a far more credible link than Floyd Mayweather to the MMA world recently. The ex-147-pound boss declared he’d been training for his mixed martial arts and UFC debut, and a superfight with Conor McGregor was the intended showdown. ‘Money’ and ‘The Notorious had seeded rumours of a boxing match in September of this year, but ‘King Khan’s’ plans could be a tad more realistic.

Khan already holds stakes in the Indian MMA promotion ‘Super Fight League,’ and when he posted images with the UFC belt on social media the worlds of boxing and MMA were once again linked in headlines. What also makes this fight very plausible is the near identical weight which both men have or currently hold world titles in.

UFC legend Royce Gracie had some good points to raise when The Independent quizzed him on this topic this week. The three-time UFC tournament winner, Bellator MMA and Pride FC veteran believes that Khan may well have the fundamental skills needed to become a mixed martial artist, but that a fight with McGregor as his debut may be a little too much:

I’m glad that Amir Khan is making a transition and if he learns some grappling, he’s got very good hands and power, he can do it. Anybody can do MMA, you just got to train for it.

If it was a boxing match I’d put my money on Amir Khan. But a MMA match, it’s a totally different ball game. Because McGregor’s been training for a long time already, so he’s smart, he’s very good. He’s top right now. Amir Khan right now wouldn’t stand a chance against him, sorry. Not in a MMA match.

But, having said that, anything can happen, there’s only one way to find out. There is a big difference, if you put the best MMA fighter in the boxing ring to fight a top boxer boxing rules it’s a totally different ball game. Or a karate fighter to fight tae kwon do rules or fight boxing rules. A boxer to fight tae kwon do rules, it’s totally different, man.

That’s what Conor McGregor is doing, what I did more than twenty-three years ago, challenged the best boxer. This is more of an MMA fight. But hey, Mike Tyson, if he hit me with his arm, if he hit me on my face I’d wake up in hospital (laughs). I love Mike Tyson, man. I’d wake up a week later in hospital (laughs).

Royce Gracie UFC champion MMA

Anything can happen. At the same time, he has a chance to hit me, I have a chance to get in a clinch and take him down. So it’s a matter of who can put the game plan on the table, who can avoid each other’s game and who can implement their strategy. There’s only one way to find out (laughs). Mike Tyson’s awesome, man.

Man, I don’t have a crystal ball, but I’m happy that McGregor is doing this, his natural weight he’s gone up to fight. In the street you don’t chose your opponents. If somebody in the street messes with you and he’s ten or twenty pounds heavier, are you going to say, “Sorry, you’re not in my weight division?” So he’s fighting open weight and he’s challenging boxers.

I’m glad somebody’s stepping up because fighters today are too concerned, not everybody but a lot of the fighters, about taking fights on short notice and weight of the opponents. I give a lot of credit to him. But Nick is a very tough fighter, too. So it’s tough, man, it can go either way. Again, like I said, whoever has the best strategy, whoever can take the opponent out of the game.

Dana White: Mayweather Can Call Me If He Wants To Fight McGregor

Despite receiving a whirlwind of media attention, a potential boxing fight between retired pound-for-pound king Floyd “Money” Mayweather and reigning UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor is likely a distant hypothetical dream for fight fans. Despite receiving a whirlwind of media attention, a potential boxing fight between retired pound-for-pound king Floyd “Money” Mayweather and reigning UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor is likely a distant hypothetical dream for fight fans.

With that being said, the two stars have done quite a good job at making the fight appear as a reality.

McGregor recently posted a picture to his official twitter account promoting the potential showdown, and Mayweather himself even said that he started the rumors, and that you just never know what could happen in combat sports.

Despite both men adding to the madness, the situation just doesn’t appear as if it will actually come to fruition. That is unless it goes through the UFC.

Recently speaking on the topic, UFC President Dana White said that if “Money” actually wanted to fight the “Notorious” one, he would have to give him a call:

“Conor McGregor is under contract with the UFC,” White said Wednesday on “The Dan Patrick Show.” “Listen, if Floyd wants to fight Conor, call me Floyd.”

Mayweather has been retired ever since he took home a one-sided decision over Andre Berto last September, improving his undefeated record to 49-0. Despite originally making it sound as if he was done for good, a possible return for “Money” has seemed very likely as of late.

McGregor, on the other hand, hasn’t competed since last March when he suffered his first UFC loss to Nate Diaz at UFC 196. He was then set to rematch Diaz at July 9’s UFC 200, but he was essentially pulled from the card after he didn’t appear in Las Vegas for his scheduled media requirements.

What do you make of the rumors surrounding Mayweather and McGregor?
