PETA is showing a vigilante streak, calling on fighters to dispense justice. The animal rights group has released a free online game that allows players to run amok through a variety of settings where animals are being abused, dispatching cruel scientists and evil military personnel along the way.

The avatars that players control to get the job done? Why, none other than a trio of vegetarian MMA stars. After all, who better to handle a job like this than men who fight for a living and carry a fondness for animals?

The game can be accessed via MMA Underground.

Players can select one of Aaron Simpson, Georgi Karakhanyan or Jake Shields to progress through the game, defeating foes and freeing animals being prepared for experimentation.

After the successful completion of each level, the player receives a reward. For beating the game using Jake Shields, you get an interview with Shields, a desktop background and a couple of informative videos.

I don’t know whether the rewards vary based on which character you select.

The final reward a triumphant player receives is having “Cheerleader Arianny” express her gratitude for your efforts, a gratitude that Cheerleader Arianny‘s live counterpart may just share.

“The PETA video game is an absolutely incredible, innovative, unique way to reach people that might not be aware of the cruelty that these animals endure,” says Celeste. “Gamers that probably wouldn’t go to the PETA website are now becoming aware of things that are happening every day.”

The game is reminiscent of a mid 90s arcade, so if you are in the mood for that, give it a whirl.

Josh Thomson has received some negative feedback from fans after posting questions on Twitter and Facebook regarding gay marriage. The Strikeforce and UFC veteran used his respective accounts to ask for feedback on where pro-marriage individuals draw the line. The tweets are still the topic of discussion in forum boards, despite the fighter going quiet about the subject since the initial interaction with fans.

On June 10, Thomson started by posting on his Twitter account:

“Should you be allowed to marry whoever you want? Before you answer that, should u be allowed to have more than 1 wife?”

The message was relayed on the fighter’s Facebook account automatically. Thomson received some opinions but no direct backlash for posing this particular question. However, in his follow-up comments on his Facebook, Thomson jumped into a kind of implied Reductio ad absurdum.

Thomson responded on his Facebook page:

“I’m not talking about just gay marriage. I’m talking about where does it stop? Where do you draw the line? People wanna marry animals, children, siblings, multiple husband/wives, etc?”

While the initial question is fair, the likening of homosexual adults of the same gender to children and animals garnered some negative feedback. Thomson was not without his backers, however.

Former UFC veteran and champion Pat Miletich responded on Thomson’s Facebook:

Josh is spot on. It may seem extreme to use some of his examples of ‘where does it end’ but I guarantee someone will want to marry their 1st cousin or even sibling. At what point does lack of civil liberty put this nation at risk? It’s already happened and will only get worse.

Miletich did not elaborate on how marriage alteration can create risk for a country.

Regardless of one’s stance on the issue, the initial question is fair. It is not impolite or improper for one to pose a question about social morality and practice. Thomson’s error appears to be in stretching his concern thin and utilizing poor logical formulation in the process.

The UFC has in the past handed out fines for anti-gay commentary; however, Thomson’s situation is not equal to past statements, like those made by Nate Diaz following his fight with Thomson. It will be interesting to note if the UFC does find any reason to reprimand the fighter.

To his credit, Thomson only posed a question. One can infer his stance, but he did not speak against homosexuals throughout the course of the debate. Still, the UFC is a private company, and some form of professional backlash could be seen in the coming days.

Cat Zingano, Husband and Ronda Rousey All Gang Up on Miesha Tate on Twitter

It’s like an episode of Mean Girls in the UFC women’s bantamweight division now that Cat Zingano and Ronda Rousey have officially teamed up against Miesha Tate.

Recently, the two UFC stars had a little bit of fun at Tate’s expense in a brief Twitter exchange. Even Zingano‘s husband, Mauricio Zingano, joined in on the conversation.

There are certainly no surprises with any shared animosity between Rousey and Tate, who have been bitter rivals for years. In an interview with Yahoo! Sports, Rousey compared her rivalry with Tate to Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier.

Zingano, on the other hand, has generally stayed out of the spotlight when it comes to social media drama. There wasn’t much in the way of pre-fight trash talk leading up to her No. 1 contender’s bout with Tate back in April.

Why would she take verbal swipes at Tate now?

Perhaps Zingano harbors a bit of resentment towards Tate for taking her place as a coach on The Ultimate Fighter Season 18.

She defeated Tate in her UFC debut to earn the coveted coaching position and a shot at Rousey‘s UFC title, but she was forced to relinquish her coaching duties and title shot after tearing her ACL and meniscus during training.

With Zingano sidelined for six to nine months, Tate was offered an opportunity to step in as a late replacement as both a coach and No. 1 contender.

If not resentment, some will look back at the alleged elbow incident involving Zingano and Tate’s boyfriend, Bryan Caraway. According to Zingano, Caraway struck her in the back of the head with an elbow while walking past her backstage at the weigh-ins for The Ultimate Fighter 17 finale. She claimed that Caraway “smiled” after the alleged incident and that he and Miesha were “both in on it.”

Whatever the case may be, Tate is baffled by Zingano‘s remarks. Instead of pouring gasoline on the fire, she took the high road in wishing Zingano well in her recovery and encouraging the rest of Twitter to do the same.

Did Zingano and her husband cross the line with their comments, or is the situation being blown out of proportion?

A former Strikeforce champion and one of the original winners of The Ultimate Fighter are gunning for a 155-pound scrap this fall.

Gilbert Melendez and Diego Sanchez are keen on meeting in the Octagon for their next fight, according to a report by Ariel Helwani for FUEL TV’s UFC Tonight.

“El Nino” made his UFC debut at UFC on FOX 7 in April, losing a close and controversial unanimous decision to UFC lightweight champ Benson Henderson.

Prior to the loss, Melendez had won seven bouts in a row under the Strikeforce banner, including three (technical) knockouts.

On the other hand, Sanchez planned to make his return to the 155-pound level at UFC on FUEL 8 in March, but he came in two pounds heavy for the matchup against PRIDE legend Takanori Gomi.

Sanchez won the bout via a hotly contested split decision.

Prior to the victory, Sanchez was coming off a 2-2 stint at welterweight, defeating Martin Kampmann and Paulo Thiago and losing to John Hathaway and Jake Ellenberger.

Last month, Melendez told Knockout Radio that he was interested in fighting Donald Cerrone, Anthony Pettis, featherweight champ Jose Aldo, Pat Healy or Diego Sanchez next (via MMA Weekly).

Melendez is currently ranked as the top lightweight in the UFC’s official rankings, while Sanchez is outside the division’s top 10.

UFC officials did not comment on the potential matchup between Melendez and Sanchez.

Would a showdown between the duo be a worthwhile bout to kick off the UFC’s fall schedule?

The second scheduled installment of the UFC’s highly anticipated debut on the Fox Sports 1 network continues to fill out. Most recently, a featherweight bout between Hatsu Hioki and Darren Elkins has been added to the card.

Both Hioki and Elkins will enter the contest coming off of a loss—Hioki to Clay Guida, Elkins to Chad Mendes—making it a very important match for each man.

A loss would mean three straight for Hioki, putting his tenure with the promotion in danger, while a second consecutive defeat for Elkins would undo nearly all of the good that came from his recent five-fight win streak.

Hioki is renowned for his advanced grappling ability, which has led to 12 career submission victories. Since joining the UFC, however, he has not succeeded in making an opponent tap. He’ll look to end that dry spell when he takes on Elkins this August.

For his part, Elkins has implemented some fine wrestling and striking to earn a bevy of decision wins inside the Octagon, though his last two bouts have ended before the first bell. The 29-year-old is expected to have an advantage over Hioki on the feet, so it will be interesting to see whether he tries to turn the contest into a striking battle.

However it pans out, this is a pairing that has some Fight of the Night potential. With Hioki‘s exciting grappling and Elkins‘ in-your-face approach, it should at the very least produce its fair share of excitement.

Hioki vs. Elkins, which was first reported by Brett Okamoto of ESPN, joins Takeya Mizugaki vs. Erick Perez as the latest bouts to be added to the UFC on Fox Sports 1: 2 card.

The event will be headlined by a welterweight fight between Carlos Condit and Martin Kampmann

The UFC’s new Fox Sports 1 series continues to fill out with new fight announcements, the latest of which is a bantamweight match between Takeya Mizugaki and Erik Perez.

The bout, first reported by MMA Weekly, has been added to UFC on Fox Sports 1 2, which will be the second installment of the series. The event is set for August 28 and will be headlined by Carlos Condit and Martin Kampmann.

Mizugaki will enter the contest having strung together victories for the first time during his UFC tenure. The Japanese striker is 4-2 with the promotion, most recently defeating Bryan Caraway via split-decision.

His opponent, Perez, is unbeaten inside the Octagon, having put together a spotless 3-0 record to date. Even more impressive than the results Perez has posted is the manner in which he has posted them—all dominant, all finishes and all ending in Round 1.

Perez’s UFC on Fox Sports 1 2 battle will mark the stiffest test of his career, however, so his streak of quick finish—and victories—is very much in jeopardy.

Regardless of the outcome the match eventually produces, the fans will undoubtedly count themselves winners. Both Perez and Mizugaki are reputed for their aggression and willingness to mix it up early and often, and it’s difficult to recall spying either take part in anything that so much as resembles a dull affair.

Mizugaki vs. Perez joins Hatsu Hioki vs. Darren Elkins as the latest additions to the UFC on Fox Sports 1 2 card, which will also feature stars like Donald Cerrone, Kelvin Gastelum, Sara McMann and Court McGee.

It is shaping up to be a very solid night of fights indeed.
