Longtime Octagon Girl Brittney Palmer opened up about her decision to walk away from the promotion after more than a decade with the promotion.

Palmer, who made her debut as a ring card girl at UFC 125 in 2011, announced her retirement in December at the 15th Annual Fighters Only World MMA Awards during her acceptance speech after winning the Ringcard Girl of the Year award

“I’ve done it for a long time and I think I’ve always had the question so many times,” Palmer said in an interview with MMA Junkie. ‘When are you going to quit? When are you going to give another girl a shot?’ I get these interview questions, and so I think about it. I’m 36 years old. I always said that once my art career started to level up to where my UFC career is and I wasn’t able to commit to both evenly, that I would have to make the decision. It was just time. You feel it.”

“… When I found out I won Ring Girl of the Year, I was actually in New York City working that event. All of a sudden, I was like, ‘You know what? Wouldn’t it just be epic if I could use this opportunity, where I have the mic, to retire.’ We don’t really get too much of a voice, so to have that opportunity I thought was just a great way to settle out the year and my career with UFC – and yeah, I did it.”

Brittney Palmer Continues to Work with the promotion behind-the-scenes

Outside of the UFC, Palmer has established herself as an accomplished contemporary artist. Though fight fans may no longer see her strutting her stuff cageside, Palmer still maintains a role with the Las Vegas-based promotion in an artistic capacity.

“I paint for the UFC now,” Palmer said. “I do their t-shirts. The last shirt that I did was for International Fight Week. … I’ve done Conor McGregor shirts. I’ve painted Jon Jones shirts. I painted, for Reebok, the UFC shirts. That’s going to be something that I want to continuously do.

“I’m working on a mural project right now, hopefully as long as everything goes as planned, I’ll be painting it during UFC 300. I will always kind of be in that world of painting with the fighters, just because I have such a good relationship with UFC and I will genuinely still watch the fights. I want to continuously be creating for them.”

During his appearance at the post-fight press event, UFC CEO Dana White revealed that Celeste had also retired alongside Palmer bringing an end to an era.

Brittney Palmer will be walking away from the UFC after 16 years of service with the promotion.

The longtime ring card girl announced her retirement while accepting the award for Best Octagon Girl at the World MMA Awards 2023 inside T-Mobile Arena on Thursday night. UFC 296 on Saturday (December 16) will serve as her swan song after more than a decade-and-a-half with the organization.

“I truly am honored to accept this award,” she said. “Thank you to the UFC, Fighter’s Only, and all the fans who voted for me. Well, there’s no better time to say it. But after 16 years with UFC, I’ve decided to retire. This weekend will be my last event, and I’m so absolutely grateful for this unforgettable experience” (h/t MMA Fighting).

Palmer got her start as a ring card girl for the WEC before the promotion was absorbed by the UFC in 2011 and quickly became a favorite among fight fans. In 2012, Palmer appeared on the cover of the March issue of Playboy Magazine, becoming just the third Octagon girl to do so.

UFC ring girls Brittney Palmer and Arianny Celeste find former UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov‘s controversial comments regarding the purpose of ring girls quite amusing, as they responded to a meme that Conor McGregor recently posted on his Twitter page mocking his old rival.

Nurmagomedov was in hot water recently after criticizing ring girls and saying that they are “the most useless people in mixed martial arts”. Palmer and Celeste, two of the most well-known ring girls who have been involved with the promotion for many years, felt disrespected by the comments and ripped Nurmagomedov in brief comments on their Instagram stories.

During a recent Moscow, Russia press conference, Nurmagomedov went off on the purpose of ring girls and questioned their position in the fight game.

“Look, I don’t want to offend anyone: Ring girls are the most useless people in martial arts,” Nurmagomedov said. “History knows many mistakes. We read history to avoid mistakes of the past in the future. If we look in history, it says they are useless. That is my personal opinion.”

Palmer and Celeste have been two of the longest-serving ring girls in UFC history, with Celeste joining the promotion in 2006 and Palmer making her first ring walk in for the UFC in 2005. Nurmagomedov is widely regarded as one of the greatest MMA fighters in the history of the sport, retiring with a career record of 29-0.

Many people around the MMA community have come to the defense of ring girls such as Palmer and Celeste, such as former UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping. During a recent podcast interview, Bisping alluded to the concept of ring girls as a fun and entertaining aspect of the fight business.

It appears that ring girls don’t appear to be going away any time soon, much to the dismay of Nurmagomedov and others.
