In the UFC Fight Night this weekend, Calvin Kattar will take on Arnold Allen. These two top-ranked featherweights will have a showdown for a spot in the top five. LowKickMMA’s Mike Owens got a chance to speak with Calvin Kattar’s head coach, Tyson Chartier, in an exclusive interview.

The trainer Tyson Chartier, offered a breakdown of how he sees Calvin Kattar squaring up against the English-born Arnold Allen. Chartier explained what skills he sees in ‘Almighty,’ stating:

“Yeah I think [Arnold Allen] obviously got good boxing he has good kicks too, good footwork, hits hard. Seems like a decent grappler. A lot of his fights do go to the ground. He’s got some slick takedowns. He’s got some good chokes. So I think it’s more like a boxer-Jiu Jitsu guy versus a boxer-wrestler.”

‘The Boston Finisher’ trains out of New England Cartel under Chartier. Before transitioning to MMA, Kattar had experience at the state level in high school wrestling. Since his switch to MMA, the US-born athlete Kattar has earned a 23-6 record.

Calvin Kattar vs Arnold Allen just makes sense

Calvin Kattar’s head coach, Tyson Chartier, also discussed why this match is so important for the American athlete to accept. For Arnold Allen and ‘The Boston Finisher,’ it’s a fight that makes sense for both men. Chartier explained that Kattar is looking to get back into the title picture and needs this win. Chartier explained:

“It’s a fight that makes sense for both guys in the rankings. He’s the highest-ranked guy available right now, because you got to assume that [Josh] Emmett and Yair [Rodríguez] are probably going to fight. And [Brian] Ortega’s hurt, and Max [Holloway] is hurt. So, it makes sense. We’re trying to get back in that title picture so we have to beat the best guy available and that’s Arnold Allen.”

Calvin Kattar has defeated some notable fighters at featherweight including Giga Chikadze, Dan Ige, and Jeremy Stephens. However, the American fighter has also differed losses to Josh Emmett, Zabit Magomedsharipov, and Max Holloway. With a win in the main event this weekend, Kattar is hoping to get back to the world championship discussion.

UFC featherweight, Calvin Kattar says that the Josh Emmett loss is behind him now, but it is still a hard pill to swallow.

UFC Fight Night Austin was host to a closely contested main event between Calvin Kattar and Josh Emmet. The bout would go all five rounds with the pair trading strikes throughout the contest. The close fought nature of the bout was evident in the end result, as Emmett won via a split-decision.

This result came with some backlash, as many felt Kattar had done enough to earn the nod.

Talking to LowKickMMA.com, Kattar explained that he while the loss is in the past, it’s not just the loss on his record, but the finical hit he had to take.

Yeah I mean Chris Lee as a judge,” Kattar began. “That was something we weren’t really prepared for, I don’t really know what he was watching in that fourth round. But without seeming like too much of a complainer, all you can do is focus on what you can control and that’s all in the rear view at this point.

“At the time I definitely felt that I had done enough. I think that people agree with me and I’m kind of sick of hearing it from everybody too, it sucks, we’re all in the same boat except I didn’t get my win-side money and that doesn’t come back.”

Kattar would add it wasn’t just a natural bias for his own performance, pointing to the statistics to bolster his claim.

It hurts,” Kattar said. “Like you said, I’m not undefeated. It’s not like I’ve never lost a fight, I get what that feels like and it sucks. But to actually think you’ve done enough to win the fight. Emmett had 21 stitches in his left eye, I had no lacerations. I out-struck him 30 plus strikes, so even off a numbers standpoint, it’s a little tougher to swallow. You get half the money and felt like you did enough to win, let alone all the title qualifications that can go on the back end of it.

Calvin Kattar is set to face off against surging British star Arnold Allen in the main event of a UFC Fight Night in the near future.

Kattar recently spoke with LowKickMMA in an exclusive interview, where he gave his thoughts on Allen. Whilst ‘The Boston Finisher’ clearly has respect for the Brit, he does also raise the point that Allen is yet to face off against a true top 5 featherweight.

“This kids on the way up,” states Kattar. “He’s like 8-0, something like that. Climbing the rankings. Doing what he’s gotta do. And to me it’s just another target moving in my direction… They’re all just opposition and an opportunity for me to go out there and prove why I’m one of the best in the world, and change my life with another win.”

“If your able to go 9-0 in the UFC it’s impressive. That being said, I don’t know if he’s ever fought anybody like myself or of that top-five caliber. We’re gonna see how he handles it.”

Calvin Kattar on Arnold Allen’s win over Dan Hooker

Arnold Allen’s biggest win to date is his recent victory over Dan ‘The Hangman’ Hooker, who had made the move down to 145lbs in an attempt to make a run at the title. Allen would stop Hooker in his tracks, knocking the CKB fighter out in the first round.

Calvin Kattar had the following to say about Allen’s win over Hooker:

“Congratulations. It’s a big W. Probably his biggest win to date, like you said. I mean, other than that, I didn’t really think much about it. Good job. There are so many other guys coming up in the rankings, he’s not the only undefeated guy coming up. There’s a few of them. And I’m not really looking behind me as much as I am in front of me. So, it’s kinda like, I think I’m gonna fight all of these guys eventually. In what order, I don’t know.

Calvin Kattar reacts to taking the Allen fight on 6 weeks’ notice

Calvin Kattar vs. Arnold Allen will take place on Oct. 29, a mere six weeks away. Whilst the likes of Kevin Holland may scoff at the idea of this being a short-notice fight, one should bare in mind that this is a top-five fight with potential title ramifications for both men. Kattar discussed how this shorter style fight camp has become the new standard for UFC fights, with his recent main event clash against Josh Emmett having a similar 7-week notice. He does also note that it is not necessarily a negative change:

“(Josh) Emmett was seven weeks. It seems to be the new norm here in the UFC, these quick camps. There are pros and cons to everything. The Giga (Chikadze) camp was 14 weeks, that was forever, it felt like. That sucked in itself. Even though you have all the time in the world, that sucked too you know. As good as it was, it was a long camp. I got covid twice during that camp. That’s how long it was.”
