Casey Kenney

UFC bantamweight contender, Casey Kenney has revealed a detached tendon in his hand suffered during his training camp for his most recent Octagon walk against Song Yadong required double surgery, as he targets a promotional return at the close of summer.

Kenney, a former feature of LFA and a product of Dana White’s Contender Series – has been sidelined from the Octagon since August of last year where he suffered a close, split decision loss against Chinese upstart, Yadong.

The loss came as Kenney’s second consecutively for the first time in his Octagon tenure, after he round himself on the wrong side of another split judging loss, this time against former two-time bantamweight champion, Dominick Cruz back in March of last year.

Casey Kenney holds a win over former flyweight title challenger, Ray Borg

5-3 from his eight-fight UFC tenure, Kenney has managed notable victories over Ray Borg, Manny Bermudez, Louis Smolka, and Alateng Heili, and recent UFC London winner, Nathaniel Wood during his stint with the promotion – with his sole other loss coming against the streaking Georgian wrestler, Merab Dvalishili.

Forced to the sidelines since his loss to Yadong, Kenney revealed during a recent interview with LowKick MMA reporter, James Lynch, how double surgery to address a detached tendon in his finger has forced his absence.

“It was a pinky injury, I did it during the camp basically – for Song (Yadong),” Casey Kenney said. “The timeframe ended up causing two surgeries, and made it a little longer. There’s a scar tissue timeframe that you have, when you detach tendons in the hand. It is what it is, you know – I had a great fight with Song.”

As far as a potential October return is concerned, Kenney plans to leave the callouts to one side, and allow his management to discuss his next opponent with the UFC.

“I’m kinda leaving it up to them (management), I’m gonna see who is available for the timeframe that I wanna come back,” Casey Kenney explained. “It has been a while, and I don’t know who is booked, but if they’re (the UFC) all booking in for October now, hopefully, I get a call here soon, see what happens, and get back to fight camp.”

Opening up the UFC 265 main card we have an exciting bantamweight match-up between Song Yadong and Casey Kenney.

Round 1: Song Yadong lands a body kick early. Casey Kenney is pushing forward a lot but is unable to land anything meaningful through the first minute of this fight. Kenney taunts his opponent but eats a heavy leg kick. Yadong jumps in with a hook but is countered well. Yadong is doing good work with his lead left hand in this opening round. The Chinese fighter throws a kick but slips and ends up on his back. Kenney jumps onto his opponent and tries to lock up the head. Yadong does well to escape and pop back to his feet. Both men continue to exchange techniques right up until the horn sounds to end round one.

Round 2: Kenney lands a calf kick at the start of round two. Yadong targets the body early in the second stanza. Kenney is pushing forward a lot in this round, he is always throwing something to keep his opponent guessing. Yadong is doing well on his back foot but this is not something we’ve seen often, if at all, during his relatively short UFC career. Both men are really throwing to finish but more often than not they are unable to land cleanly. Kenney tries to take it to the mat but Yadong easily shakes it off. They exchanges kicks. Kenney cracks his opponent with a straight left. And another! Kenney is starting to get some momentum and Yadong realizes that when he shoots in for a takedown. Kenney is able to shake it off and not a lot happens before round two comes to a close.

Round 3: Kenney continues to push forward but Yadong makes him pay with a counter left. Kenney lands a punch of his own and follows it up with a kick. Straight right hand for Yadong. Yadong is finding success on the feet now. Kenney lands a knee but it doesn’t seem to bother his opponent. Two minutes are left on the clock and Kenney dives at Yadong’s feet and is easily shrugged off. Yadong jabs, Kenney counters, Yadong kicks. This is such a well-matched fight. Yadong presses forward with a flurry of punches. 30 seconds left and they are letting it all hang out. In the final 10 seconds, Kenney secures a takedown and ends the fight on top, dropping elbows.

Casey Kenney wants to become the first man to stop Song Yadong inside the Octagon when they square off at UFC 265.

The former LFA dual-weight champion is intent in making a statement following his razor-thin decision loss against bantamweight legend, Dominick Cruz, last time out.

In an interview with LowKickMMA, Kenney spoke with excitement about the prospect of fighting in front of fans again at UFC 265 which will take place in front of live crowd at a venue yet to be disclosed.

“You guys see how I fight, especially this fight coming up,” Kenney said. “Song Yadong, he comes forward, throws down and that’s the fight with fans. You get a fight like the Nathaniel Wood and I or even Dom you know, with fans in there, the place is going to be electric. (It’s) a similar Casey Kenney you’re going to see out there, but you know, a little fan boost never hurts anyone. It’s going to be a good energy.”

The 30-year-old thinks his style meshes well with Yadong’s and if the Chinese fighter can stand up to his power they are destined for a Fight of the Night bonus cheque.

“I always say my style, if you survive, it’s going to be fight of the night,” Kenney said. “He’s got a similar style, so I think that’s Fight of the Night written all over it right there.”

Ultimately though, Kenney doesn’t think that’s how his UFC 265 fight will play out.

“I’m looking for a finish man, you know, they don’t pay by the hour in there and I’m due a finish,” Kenney said. “I don’t think he’s been finished in the UFC, so I’m looking to put Song away and be the first guy to finish him in the UFC.”

Do you think Casey Kenney will get back in the win column when he squares off against Song Yadong at UFC 265?

Sean O'Malley

UFC bantamweight prospect Sean O’Malley has spoken out for the first time since Casey Kenney made sexual and insensitive remarks about Megan Anderson during an appearance on his podcast.

During a January episode of “The Timbo Sugarshow”, Kenney was asked by O’Malley’s coach, Tim Welch, if he would “smash” Megan Anderson.

“Probably not, man,” Kenney replied while laughing. “She’s not too … well, I mean, if it came down to it, and it was like 5 a.m., 4, she’s a 5 a.m.-er, 4 a.m.-er. Just us two hanging out, like, ‘F*ck it, let’s do it.’”

Anderson took to social media to blast Kenney for his “utterly degrading” remarks.

“I guess MMA is a line of work where you can publicly talk about whether you’d have sex with a coworker in an utterly degrading way and face zero consequences,” Anderson wrote. “Disgusting behavior and it’s unfortunate that he’ll be fighting on my card in March.

Kenney has since apologized for his comments but O’Malley had stayed silent on the issue until a recent interview with Ariel Helwani.

“I think that’s just a … I mean, you can’t let … if someone … you can’t let someone else’s words affect how you feel emotionally,” O’Malley said about Megan Anderson. “If you said something about me, and I … I don’t know. It’s … I don’t know. I don’t know. She’s not a co-worker anymore. It is what it is.” (Transcribed by MMA Junkie)

The former Invicta champion has seemly responded to O’Malleys comments with the below post on Twitter.

O’Malley is set to compete at UFC 260 this Saturday. ‘Suga’ will face Thomas Almeida.

It’s his first bout back since losing his undefeated record against Marlon Vera at UFC 252.

Do you think Sean O’Malley should’ve been more apologetic for his role in upsetting Megan Anderson?
