As many are aware, WWE champion CM Punk was scheduled to accompany his friend and UFC fighter, Chael Sonnen, to the Octagon on January 28.

The upcoming event—the UFC on FOX 2 special—will emanate from Chicago, the hometown of Punk.

Given the location, Punk’s presence at the show was to simply show support and rally the crowd behind Sonnen before his bout with Mark Munoz.

In fact, Punk had already gotten approval from the WWE to make the appearance and everyone, especially him, was under the impression it was going to happen.

However, all it took was one man to curtail Punk’s plans to show up at the UFC broadcast—and one is more than enough if your name is Vince McMahon.

According to F4WOnline, McMahon’s refusal to allow CM Punk to attend the show, let alone show his face on FOX TV, came out of the blue:

Dave Meltzer writes about the situation in detail:

It is extremely unlikely that C.M. Punk will be walking Chael Sonnen to the octagon on the 1/28 show in Chicago.  Punk, in fact, has been told that he shouldn’t even be at the show.  Front Row Brian, a noted poster on message boards including ours, who broke all aspects of this story from the beginning, first noted yesterday that Punk was told by Vince McMahon that he couldn’t walk Sonnen to the ring and that he didn’t want him at the show.  Punk also confirmed to Ariel Helwani yesterday that he would not be allowed to walk Sonnen to the ring.

We contacted two people very close to the situation, one who noted that officially nothing was 100% but that they would be surprised if it happened.  The other noted that Punk got the official word yesterday after pretty much being told on Monday and described it as Vince just being in one of his moods.  Punk and Sonnen had become friends, which makes sense given that Punk is a pro wrestler who overachieved from a marketing standpoint including by learning from MMA, and Sonnen is an MMA fighter who overachieved from a marketing standpoint from learning from pro wrestling.  Sonnen had asked Punk to accompany him since it was in Chicago and Punk and Sonnen both got it cleared.  But when it became a news story, WWE had a change of heart.

Being a consummate businessman, it is perplexing that McMahon would suddenly forbid Punk from escorting Sonnen to the Octagon.

Logically, there are only good things that would result from the current WWE champion hobnobbing with one of the UFC’s top stars.

The most invaluable benefit is the exposure—from both UFC die-hards and the casual mainstream audience—Punk would garner.

And more than just being highlighted on a hyped, nationally-televised event is the legitimacy the “Straight Edge” superstar would reap via his association with a “real” combatant in Sonnen.

In addition, any fears that Punk—and by extension, the WWE—would be undermined by the UFC announcers are unfounded. If such were the case, UFC president Dana White wouldn’t have allowed Brock Lesnar to partner with the WWE regarding the video game WWE ’12. In reality, White didn’t have to share his top draw with the WWE, but he did.

Consequently, the only possible reason for McMahon’s decision is that he does not want any member of his roster to transcend the WWE brand.

For example, after having to endure Steve Austin’s retirement, The Rock’s Hollywood dreams and Lesnar’s abrupt exit, McMahon may be paranoid about relying on his talent—and their whims—to carry the company.

Instead, by reinforcing the WWE global brand as a singular entity, superstars become relatively interchangeable in an organization wherein the whole exceeds the sum of its parts.

UFC on Fox 2: CM Punk Will Not Accompany Chael Sonnen to the Octagon

According to MMAFighting.com, Chael Sonnen will no longer be accompanied to the Octagon at UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) on Fox 2 by WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) superstar and champion CM Punk.

Apparently, WWE chairman Vince McMahon was opposed to the idea of Punk making his way to the steel cage with Sonnen in tow and has thus put a halt to it.

This latest news was verified by Punk himself.

Once word got around that two of the most polarizing figures in professional wrestling and MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) were set to share centre stage at the Jan. 28 event, it went viral.

And that was regardless of Punk’s minor role of just escorting Sonnen to his co-main event matchup against Mark “The Filipino Wrecking Machine” Munoz.

Add to the equation that the event itself is being held in Punk’s native Chicago, then the furor culminated by their expected appearance in tandem was understandable.

Both Sonnen and Punk are at the top of their respective games with regards to entertainment value but, more importantly, their innate oratory skills which have thrust them into the public’s stratosphere more so than many of their contemporaries.

With that said, the main event features Rashad Evans and Phil Davis, with the former requiring a win to keep him in contention for the UFC light heavyweight title currently held by Jon “Bones” Jones.

Sonnen, on the other hand, needs to secure a victory against Munoz if he’s to stand any chance of a rematch with 185-pound kingpin Anderson “The Spider” Silva sometime later this year.

UFC on Fox 2 is set for Jan. 28, 2012 at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois.

Anderson Silva Suffers *Another* Injury and Is Unsure When He’ll Return

(Unfortunately, rehab for”The Spider” consisted mainly of wearing a Power Balance bracelet and eating Whoppers.)

It looks like Anderson Silva is not nearly as bionic as we thought.

TATAME is reporting that the UFC middleweight champ has sustained *another* injury and his return to training and competition will likely be pushed back as a result, meaning the winner of the UFC on Fox 2 bout on January 28 between Chael Sonnen and Mark Munoz may have to wait a while before getting a title shot.

Silva revealed during an appearance on a Brazilian television show that in addition to his damaged shoulder, he is also nursing a back injury that occurred recently.

“I’m not sure when I’ll come back to fight because I’m still with a shoulder injury,” he explained. “Another injury arose recently on my lower back, so I’m getting treatment.”

So the question is, should the number one contender wait for the fight or should the UFC do what they are doing with the welterweight division and introduce an interim title?

Keep in mind, the last time a champ suffered a major shoulder injury, he was out nearly a year recovering from surgery.

Video of the Day: Chael Sonnen Gives Some Kids Disturbing Advice On How to Compete

(Video courtesy of Flo Wrestling)

Chael Sonnen did a seminar back in November for some youth at the Northeast Duals’ “MMA Fest,” held at Hudson Valley Community College in New York where he gave an inspiring speech about how to match intensity with an opponent.

“One thing on intensity, and I hope that we’re all old enough that I can tell this without people taking it for something that it’s not, but when we’re being intense and we’re out there and we’re competing — wrestling, fighting, MMA, whatever it is — I need to match my partner’s intensity. I can’t let him come in and bully me,” Sonnen explained. “I can’t let him pick on me. For some of you younger guys, eventually you’ll be getting into high school as freshman and these older guys are gonna push you around a little bit. Then you’ll go back and do it to the next group. It’s just the way that it works. You get to college and it’s intimidating because the intensity’s a little different. You gotta match ’em.”

Sounds like good advice so far. Maybe Chael does have a career in politics if he can ever get his criminal record expunged by an outgoing president. Let’s listen to what other sage advice the Gangster from America has for the youth of the nation .

Sounds like good advice so far. Maybe Chael does have a career in politics if he can ever get his criminal record expunged by an outgoing president. Let’s listen to what other sage advice the Gangster from America has for the youth of the nation .

“If they go first, you match ‘em instantly. If a guy clubs you, you club him as hard or harder and you do it right then. Don’t wait a minute and come back with it. He clubs you, you club him right then [and] he’ll stop doin’ it,” Chael said. “Okay? He will stop…if you’re in a match and the guy gets intense, you get intense right there, right then. As hard or harder right now and he’ll stop doin’ it. Okay? One-up him.”

It sounds like Chael practices what he preaches. He is the king of “one-upmanship.” He must be talking about smack talk on the mats — a craft he’s taken to the next level. Maybe he’ll share some of his secrets with these aspiring wrestlers and fighters.

“If he slaps you, punch him. If he punches you, kick him. If he kicks you, stab him. If he stabs you, shoot him,” he stated flatly. “If he shoots you, you go kill his family. You guys get the point there?”

Wait, what? Rewind that. Did he just tell them to stab and shoot their opponents or did I mishear, “slap their wives on the asses?” Imagine your kids coming home from that seminar and you catch one of them making a shiv in case they need to “one-up” someone that kicked them on the playground. That isn’t cool, especially since he mentioned there were some primary school-aged kids at the seminar.

In Chael’s defense, he did mention afterwards that he doesn’t really mean to stab or shoot anyone, but kids are impressionable. I’m thinking the pro-wrestling schtick sometimes takes on a life of its own and he blurts out whatever might get a reaction, regardless of the consequences.

“One-up him and you do it right then. Don’t let him push you around. It’s a practice…it’s a mindset… of course I’m not talkin’ about hurting someone, but what I’m talking about is we gotta match ‘em and we gotta do it right now, okay? You can’t go, ‘Aw, this guy slapped me on Tuesday, so on Friday I’m gonna get even with him,’ okay? If he clubs you, you club him right back,” Sonnen confusingly explained. “That’ll keep everything level and that will up everybody’s intensity.”

The speech actually could have been a classic, had he not added the questionable part in the middle about stabbing, shooting and killing an opponent’s family. Imagine A-Rod telling a group of kids to bash someone’s skull in with a bat for throwing a brush-back pitch. It wouldn’t reflect well on his team or the sport of baseball.

Hopefully Bob Reilly and the Culinary Union don’t latch onto this one.

Here’s a less disturbing talk Chael gave the group about positioning:

Anthony Johnson Says Chael Sonnen and Anderson Silva Should Be Worried About Him

According to MMATorch.com, Anthony “Rumble” Johnson, the newest resident of the 185-lb division, has delivered a message of intent to Chael Sonnen, Anderson Silva, Vitor Belfort and the rest of the middleweight assemblage, in which he says they should all be worried about him.

“I will dominate Vitor Belfort. Chael Sonnen is seen as the top threat to Anderson Silva’s title. Well, I am at 185 pounds and everyone at middleweight has to worry about me now. I’m in this division to go to the top. You will see a whole different animal now I am at this weight class,” Johnson said.

Johnson (10-3 MMA, 7-3 UFC), who has spent almost the entirety of his professional career at welterweight, finally switched to middleweight having on numerous occasions suffered extensively with cutting weight at 170-lb.

“Moving up to face Vitor was a new chapter in my life, a new challenge,” Johnson reflected in quotes released by the UFC on Tuesday. “I’m going to stay here and I’m going to take over this weight class.”

In several days time at UFC 142, Johnson will make his first foray into the division, where he’s slated to lock horns with “The Phenom” Belfort in the Brazilian’s own backyard.

Belfort (20-9 MMA, 9-5 UFC), a veteran of the sport, has campaigned at both the 205-lb and heavyweight divisions. He’s also a former UFC light heavyweight champion, having defeated Randy Couture at UFC 46 back in January of 2004.

A Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, Belfort is known for his quick hands and punching prowess.

“I’m going to use everything in my power to dominate Vitor in every way possible,” Johnson said. “He’s fast, he’s powerful, he has a lot of experience, but my right hand is his Kryptonite.”

Johnson has won the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) Knockout of the Night honors twice—against Kevin Burns and most recently Charlie Brenneman.

It’s safe to say that Johnson is looking ripped with the mass bulk, and if the NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association) wrestling champion can upend Belfort come fight night, the rest of the division is bound to take notice.

UFC 142 is set for Jan. 14, 2012 at the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
