Beneil Dariush

Beneil Dariush has revealed that he is expected to be the backup for the lightweight title fight between Charles Oliveira and Islam Makhachev at UFC 280.

Dariush also has a fight on the UFC 280 card, as he will be taking on Mateusz Gamrot in a three round bout in Abu Dhabi. The card is stacked up to be one the best events of the year, and of all time. Dariush has claimed that he will be filling in for Oliveira or Makhachev, if one of them were to miss weight the day before, or if someone unfortunately gets injured.

In his last championship bout against Justin Gaethje, Oliveira missed weight by a half pound and was forced to vacate his title. Oliveira claimed that he had made weight the night before and the day of. He claimed that he made weight backstage on a digital scale, and even had other people claiming that either the digital scale in the back was off, or the scale fighters weigh in on was off. Oliveira ended up winning the bout, but unfortunately was not the lightweight champion anymore.

Beneil Dariush claims that his manager, Ali Abdelaziz, told him to stay ready

“That’s what Ali told me, I was the backup for this,” Dariush claimed in an interview. “If something goes wrong, they would put me in.” (Transcribed by MMAFighting).

If something were too happen, Dariush would have to shed an extra pound to make championship weight. He claims that will not be a problem, as he is gearing up for a three round fight.

“Yeah, of course. It’s not that hard. I make 156. Last time in Texas [UFC 262], I was pretty much 155 when I fought.”

Dariush has been on a seven fight winning streak, and could be next for a title fight. He has not fought since May of 2021, as he was scheduled to fight Makachev, but he had to pull out due to an ankle injury he sustained.

Charles Olveira vs Islam Makhachev

Islam Makhachev and Charles Oliveira are heading into their highly anticipated showdown at UFC 280 for the vacant lightweight championship. On Twitter, the 22-1 Russian-born MMA fighter mapped out how he sees this title fight going.

“First round warm up, second round drag him to deep water, third round get business done Inshallah ? Can’t wait for Oct 22.”

Makhachev says he will finish the Brazilian former titleholder in round three, and walk away as the new UFC Lightweight Champion. The Dagestani fighter made his debut in the UFC in 2015 and since then has sustained merely one loss. Currently, the 30-year-old Islam Makhachev is on a ten-fight unbeaten streak. Overall in MMA, he has a 63% finish rate whether by KO/TKO or submission.

Dagestani-born former champion Khabib Nurmagomedov retired, undefeated, and relinquished his UFC title in 2020. Nurmagomedov and Islam Makhachev are training partners and when this fight was announced earlier this year, the Russian athlete said:

“October 22, I’m bringing UFC Lightweight Belt back to Dagestan Inshallah”

The Brazilian-born Charles Olveira had a long road to UFC gold. He made his promotional debut in 2010 and had a mixed record in the organization, trading wins, and losses. After he changed weight classes and fight camps, he earned eleven wins consecutively and a UFC world championship title.

UFC 280 Charles Olveira vs Islam Makhachev for the vacant title

Charles Olveira put together an incredible win streak having victories over fighters such as Justin Gaethje, Dustin Poirier, and Michael Chandler, all via finish. He was the UFC lightweight champion up until his title match against Gaethje in May of this year. He missed weight and was stripped of the title and was unable to compete for the belt during the fight. The Brazilian athlete won the fight but the title remains vacant.

At UFC 280 on October 22, broadcast live from Abu Dhabi, Charles Olveira and Islam Makhachev will be fighting for the vacant UFC lightweight championship title. It is a battle of number one versus number two at lightweight for the UFC 280 main event fight.

Also featured on UFC 280 will be a UFC Bantamweight Championship fight with Aljamain Sterling looking to defend his title against the former champion TJ Dillashaw. Additionally, Sean O’Malley will face the stiffest test of his career when he meets Petr Yan.

UFC 280 looks to be a major event for the UFC with high-ranking athletes facing off, plus two title fights in the main and co-main event positions.
