UFC lightweight contender Islam Makhachev has shared a sentiment popular among some of former champion Charles Oliveira’s previous opponents.

Throughout Oliveira’s once-unlikely reign, one narrative existed, and it surrounded the idea that “Do Bronx” has some level of quit in him. Despite Oliveira overcoming adversity against Michael Chandler at UFC 262, Justin Gaethje was pretty resounding in his view of the Brazilian, suggesting that Chandler’s early barrage proved that Oliveira has a tendency to give up.

But at UFC 269, the now-former champion, a title he acquired after being stripped of the belt following a weight miss earlier this month, defended the belt against the heavily-favoured Dustin Poirier, once again forcing a stoppage after being knocked down early.

That pattern continued against Gaethje at UFC 274. While “The Highlight” was out to prove himself right, he ended up tapping out in the third round after being locked in a tight rear-naked choke. Like his previous two fights, Oliveira’s triumph came after he’d gotten a feel of the canvas following some clean shots.

Having overcome adversity to have his hand raised three times in a row, you’d be forgiven for thinking that the ‘Oliveira has quit in him’ narrative has become a thing of the past. Nope. Top contender Makhachev has now breathed fresh life into the sentiment.

During a recent interview with ESPN MMA’s Brett Okamoto, Makhachev suggested that when confronted with a true challenge, Oliveira quits, something the Dagestani believes the eight losses on the former champ’s record proves.

“We know when someone give him hard time, he always gives up,” said Makhachev. “That’s why I’m gonna take him down, make him tired, and he’s gonna give up like he did 10 (eight) times in the UFC.”

Makhachev: When I Make Oliveira Tired, He’ll Quit

Makhachev went on to claim that the only reason the Brazilian didn’t give up in his past three fights was due to the fact that his opponents were strikers and were mostly unwilling to mix with him on the ground.

The #3-ranked contender promised to show what happens if Oliveira gets tired when he is the one standing toe-to-toe with him inside the Octagon.

“He is the same. If someone give him hard time, he’s gonna give up, 100%,” said Makhachev. “These guys, like Chandler, drop him down but nobody keep him there, make him a little bit tired, give him a hard time there. Like last fight, how Justin fight with him. He almost finished him… dropped him down but stayed in the striking.

“This is big mistake. Everybody’s scared of his grappling, but I don’t care about it… I know I’m gonna take him down, make him tired, and I can finish him there,” claimed Makhachev. “When I make him tired, I know 100% he’s gonna give up. He give up how many times? Versus Pettis, Holloway; many times, nothing changes. I know this. People say he is the most dominant champion, but all his opponents drop him down.”

With Oliveira’s weight miss and subsequent victory over Gaethje, the lightweight title is now without an owner. “Do Bronx” has secured his place on one side of the inevitable vacant championship fight, and Makhachev believes he should be the one opposite him.

If the UFC agrees, and if Oliveira’s unwillingness to fight the Dagestani until he beats Beneil Dariush and another contender dissipates, Makhachev may well have the chance to prove his theory right.

If he fails, it’s safe to say that nobody can brand Oliveira a ‘quitter’ anymore, if that ship hasn’t sailed already…

Islam Makhachev Confident He Will Beat Charles Oliveira; ‘I Can Finish This Guy’

Islam Makhachev believes he is the one that should face Charles Oliveira for the vacant UFC lightweight championship.

While speaking with ESPN’s Brett Okamoto, Makhachev (22-1-0) said that is currently in Dubai preparing for a title bout that he expects to take place on October 22.

“I am in Dubai now preparing this area for a title fight,” said Makhachev.

The last time we saw Islam Makhachev in the Octagon, it was against late replacement Bobby Green in February. Green stepped in on short notice to replace an injured Beneil Dariush. Makhachev finished Green in the first round via TKO.

Riding a 10-fight win streak, Islam Makhachev and many others within the MMA community believe he is next in line for a title opportunity. Unfortunately for Makhachev, Dana White still has that #1 contender bout between Makhachev and Dariush on his mind.

“Who doesn’t think Dariush and Islam is a great fight? It’s a f*cking killer fight,” White said during the UFC 274 post-fight press conference. “I would love to see that fight to see who the No. 1 contender is, but I’m not gonna lie, after tonight I wouldn’t mind doing Islam vs. Oliveira, either. We’ll see what happens.”

Makhachev argues that he should not have to fight Dariush to determine the No.1 contender as the division has no champion.

“We don’t have a champion,” Makhachev said. “Charles is a contender. That’s why it’s going to be for the title. I deserve it. I have a 10-fight win streak.”

“[Oliveira] said I don’t deserve this, but he’s asking about Nate Diaz and Conor [McGregor],” Makhachev said. “I think Charles is a No. 1 contender now. We don’t have a champion because he don’t make weight. He is not a professional.”

Islam Makhachev Believes He Is a Much More Dangerous Fight for Oliveira Than His Previous Opponents

Makhachev believes he is a much more dangerous opponent for Oliveira than fighters like Michael Chandler and Justin Gaethje. Unlike Oliveira’s last two opponents, Makhachev is very comfortable and confident going to the ground. With four submissions in his last 10 bouts and 10 victories via submission overall, Makhachev believes he can get ‘Do Bronx’ to the canvas and finish the former lightweight king.

“I’m gonna take him down, make him tired and he gonna give up like he did 10 times in the UFC,” said Makhachev. “If someone give him hard time, he’s going to give up 100 percent.

“[Justin} almost finish him, but when he drop him, he stayed striking. Everyone is scared of his grappling, but I don’t care about his grappling honestly, because I grapple with the best grapplers in the world. I grew up with Khabib [Nurmagomedov] all my life. That’s why I don’t care about his grappling.

“I’m gonna take him down, make him tired and I can finish him there. Everyone says grappling is his area, but I’m gonna finish him in this area.”

After victories over Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje, many have talked about the prospect of Khabib Nurmagomedov returning to face Oliveira; an idea that Makhachev laughed off.

“This is like an easy fight for Khabib,” Makhachev said. “Khabib have the most dominant grappling from top. He’s going to take him down, hold him there. Very easy. I honestly think this is a very easy fight for Khabib. Stylistically, all of [Oliveira’s] pressure is not going to work against Khabib, because Khabib pressures all of his opponents.

“We don’t have to say Khabib is going to beat Charles. I’m going to beat Charles. And everybody is going to understand. Honestly, I believe I can finish this guy and I really want to finish him in the grappling, in his area. I know I can do this.”

Is Makhachev the man to face Charles Oliveira or does he need one more big win?

While former UFC interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson appreciates Charles Oliveira’s offer to train together, he feels he has to turn it down.

After suffering a fourth straight defeat to Michael Chandler at UFC 274, Ferguson is on the hunt for a new team. He has had his fair share of past issues with his former coaches and wants to find a team that is willing to take in a hungry veteran.

Following his most recent loss, Oliveira was one of a few fighters to reach out to Ferguson on social media with words of encouragement. Oliveira offered Ferguson to come train with him in preparation for his next fight.

During a recent interview with MMA Junkie, Ferguson was asked whether or not Oliveira made the pitch for clout.

“No, I don’t think it’s social media clout. I have to really reflect on what he said because Chute Boxe is a very good school. But he is in my weight class. I’m one of the only fighters that he hasn’t finished,” Ferguson said. “I see myself competing against him again… I’m looking for local gyms that I’m not going to compete with.” (h/t Sportskeeda)

Oliveira and Ferguson battled at UFC 256, with Oliveira earning a unanimous decision victory. Oliveira has gone on a run ever since, winning the title over Chandler and earning wins over Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje.

Despite Oliveira’s generous invite, Ferguson remains fixated on getting back into the thick of things in the lightweight division. While these two lightweights share a lot of respect for each other, Ferguson feels training together could be a conflict of interest.

What gyms should Tony Ferguson consider joining?

UFC lightweight contender Islam Makhachev wants a shot at Charles Oliveira, and this is far from the first time in their careers he’s wanted it.

Makhachev has won 10 in a row in the UFC and appears on the verge of a potential lightweight title shot. UFC President Dana White has hinted that Makhachev will need to defeat Beneil Dariush to earn that opportunity.

But in the meantime, Makhachev has gone after former lightweight titleholder Charles Oliveira for a fight. Oliveira was stripped of his title for failing to make weight ahead of UFC 274 this past weekend.

Makhachev has accused Oliveira of hypocrisy for calling out for fights with Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz over him. Oliveira has said that Makhachev needs to win one more fight to earn a potential shot at the title.

In a recent tweet, Makhachev shared a receipt showing a callout from three years ago of Oliveira.

“Keep calling out Charles since 2019,” Makhachev revealed. “But all of them scared even pronounce my name.”

After one fan pressed Makhachev for calling for a fight in Abu Dhabi instead of Brazil, Makhachev seemed open to the idea.

“We can fight in the middle of Paraiba bro, just make sure your boy Charles shows up,” Makhachev replied.

Makhachev, a protege of former lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, is looking to become the next Dagestan-born UFC champion. He has recently picked up finishes over Dan Hooker, Bobby Green, and Thiago Moises.

Makhachev was supposed to face Dariush earlier this year before Dariush pulled out with a leg injury. After turning down a short-notice fight at UFC 272 against Rafael dos Anjos, White claimed that Makhachev will need to win the rescheduled fight with Dariush before a shot at the belt.

Makhachev wants a shot at Oliveira as he’s called for repeatedly in recent years, and a clash between the two top 155lb contenders could happen sooner rather than later.

Do you think Islam Makhachev should get a lightweight title fight next against Charles Oliveira?

Charles Oliveira

Due to the huge array of records Charles Oliveira has broken, he is now begging to enter the lightweight GOAT discussion.

This past weekend, Charles Oliveira extended his winning streak to 11 with a statement victory over Justin Gaethje at UFC 274. ‘Do Bronx’ has looked phenomenal in his recent outings and dispatched the human ‘Highlight’ reel soundly in the opening round. In one of the most impressive runs in the sport, Oliveira has racked up wins over former UFC, Bellator, and World Series of Fighting champions.

Oliveira snatched the lightweight gold against Michael Chandler and has beaten the likes of Dustin Poirier, Tony Ferguson, and now Gaethje in his last four. The 32-year-old Brazilian holds the record for most finishes in the UFC with 19 of his 21 wins coming via KO/TKO or submission.

In a recent episode of MMA Fighting’s Trocação Franca, Charles Oliveira made the case for himself as the greatest of all time.

“Most bonuses. Most submissions. Most finishes. What else? I’m breaking records. There are no arguments against facts. I’m the chosen one. That’s the reality,” Oliveira said.

Charles Oliveira responds to Khabib comparison

During the same interview, Oliveira was asked how he would measure up against the legendary Khabib Nurmagomedov and BJ Penn in the debate for the greatest 155-lbs fighter of all time.

Initially, Oliveira backed himself as “the greatest of all time.” Then, he took a moment to regroup as he continued his response.

“I’m getting there,” he said. “I’m becoming one of the best of all-time. I don’t think [I am] yet. One step at a time. I’m up there. We have to keep our feet on the ground, be humble. Let people think that. What do you think, am I the greatest of all-time? That’s the question.

“My age, 32, with records of most submissions and bonuses and so many other things I have to start writing down so I don’t forget. Lightweight champion, 11 wins in a row. Of those 11 wins, only one decision. We’re happy.”

Do you believe Charles Oliveira to be the GOAT over Khabib or BJ Penn?

Bisping To Makhachev: You Can’t Call Charles Oliveira A Coward

Former UFC champion Michael Bisping vehemently disagrees with Islam Makhachev’s take on Charles Oliveira’s post-UFC 274 callouts. At last weekend’s pay-per-view, Oliveira continued his incredible run of form inside the Octagon. In the main event, “Do Bronx” submitted top contender Justin Gaethje in the very first round. But despite extending his win streak to 11,…

But despite extending his win streak to 11, the Brazilian left Phoenix without the title after missing weight.

Nevertheless, Oliveira, like many fans and pundits, still sees himself as the top man at 155 pounds, something he’ll look to further prove by regaining the gold in a vacant championship fight later this year.

Having secured number-one contender status at UFC 274, Oliveira took to the mic to call out former two-division champion Conor McGregor. The 32-year-old has previously expressed his willingness to let McGregor jump the queue to face him. Oliveira’s pursuit of a money fight also saw him mention the name of fan-favorite Nate Diaz.

One man who isn’t happy about Oliveira’s choices is the #3-ranked lightweight Makhachev. Having staked his claim to stand opposite the Brazilian with the vacant strap on the line, the Dagestani accused Oliveira of cowardice for suggesting that he hasn’t earned a title shot whilst calling out the unranked Diaz and 1-3 lightweight McGregor.

Bisping, who knows a thing or two about opting to face a star over worthy contenders having faced middleweight newcomer Georges St-Pierre in 2017, believes it’s ludicrous to label Oliveira as “scared.”

Bisping: Oliveira Is Prize-Fighting, Not Ducking Makhachev

During a recent video uploaded to his YouTube channel, the former middleweight king assessed the situation that the lightweight division finds itself in following the May 7 PPV.

Discussing Makhachev’s latest comments, Bisping shut down any and all claims that Oliveira could be considered a “coward” after fighting three elite contenders back-to-back. For “The Count,” the now-former champ is simply doing what all fighters enter the sport for: prize-fighting.

“He (Makhachev) doesn’t really have a point. You can’t call Charles Oliveira a coward. You can’t call him a coward,” insisted Bisping. “I understand what Charles is doing. Charles, or us, as fighters, we are prizefighters, we wanna get paid. Listen, he has fought all the top guys. You can’t call a man a coward after he’s just beaten Michael Chandler, Dustin Poirier, and Justin Gaethje in a row. You can’t say that.

“That’s three of the best fighters in the division, three of the best fights that we’ve seen in recent memory, and obviously he won all three of them, and he finished all three of them,” Bisping continued. “So what he’s trying to do is trying to get paid. Of course, he’ll get paid anyway, but he wants that mega payday. Diaz or Conor would provide that.”

Bisping also noted that should Oliveira fight and beat the returning McGregor and restore his place on the lightweight throne, top contenders like Makhachev and Beneil Dariush will still be around to challenge him.

“If he beats Conor, which I would favor him to, Beneil’s still gonna be there, Islam’s still gonna be there, all the other fighters, they’re still gonna be there. But the cash cow Conor McGregor might not be around forever… You can’t call Charles Oliveira a coward for wanting to fight Conor McGregor.”

Who would you rather see Charles Oliveira face next, Conor McGregor or Islam Makhachev?
