Former UFC bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt has called for a trilogy bout with longtime rival and former teammate T.J. Dillashaw.

Cody Garbrandt and T.J. Dillashaw’s last two fights both resulted in a Dillashaw KO victory. However, the legitimacy of these wins is questionable at best considering Dillashaw would later test positive for EPO. After serving a two-year ban from the sport, Dillashaw would return, defeating Cory Sandhagen in a controversial five-round bout.

Dillashaw was then booked into a title fight with the current 135lb title holder, Aljamin Sterling. The fight would end up being somewhat of a farce, as it become apparent that Dillashaw had been suffering from a shoulder injury his entire camp, resulting in him being unable to mount any offense. Sterling defeated Dillashaw via second-round TKO.

During this time, Garbrandt has also been struggling with form. ‘No Love’ is 1-3 in his last four bouts, including a brutal KO loss to Kai Kara-France in a failed attempt to move down to 125lbs.

However, Garbrandt has now set his sights on a rematch with Dillashaw. He recently took to Twitter, posting the following scathing callout:

“This dude is a bitch. 10 days before our first fight the UFC flew me to Las Vegas to get epidural shots in my back because I couldn’t even walk I didn’t make any excuses or cry about it after I lost this cheating b*stard. Me vs tj book that shit epo can’t save you anymore.”

Cody Garbrandt Reveals Why UFC Granted Him TJ Dillashaw Rematch

Cody Garbrandt has made an interesting claim.

Cody Garbrandt is preparing for a big rematch this weekend and while promoting it, he revealed that there is a good reason for him getting a second chance at the UFC bantamweight title against champion TJ Dillashaw.

If you recall, their first fight went down at the UFC 217 pay-per-view event at Madison Square Garden in New York City in November where Dillashaw finished Garbrandt to win back the bantamweight title. Now, the promotion has booked the rematch between these two fighters for the upcoming UFC 227 event.

Garbrandt stated in a recent interview that despite the fact that he was finished in their first fight, the UFC wants him to be the champion after the issues with the UFC trying to book Dillashaw against UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson.

“The simple fact is, T.J. didn’t want this fight, [the UFC] had to basically tell him,” Garbrandt said at the open workouts yesterday (transcript courtesy of MMA Fighting). “He wanted to go down and fight Mighty Mouse. Even if he didn’t want to fight me, you didn’t see him wanting to fight Dominick [Cruz]. Dom has a win against him. He wants the easiest style match-up. He didn’t want to fight me – lord knows he doesn’t want to fight me, he knows what I bring to the table – Dominick’s already in his head with a win over him so he says, ‘I’m gonna go after Mighty Mouse.’ For what? Mighty Mouse is 125 pounds.”

“That’s the thing, that was my whole idea,” Garbrandt said. “I ended up hitting up Sean Shelby and Dana White, saying I’m gonna knock T.J. out and then go down and fight Mighty Mouse. That was my original thought. T.J. stole that from me, stole everything from me. If the UFC wanted that fight to prosper, they would have made that fight happen. They don’t want that to happen. They already moved on. They want me to be the champ, that’s why the gave me the rematch. They called me and offered me the fight in March, T.J. turned it down and made all these excuses and I had to wait all the way until August to fight him. I was ready to go way before that. I told my manager, ‘I’m ready to fight. I don’t want to have my return postponed.’”

“New blood, it’s fine,” Garbrandt said. “I’m glad these guys are going out there and putting on performances but who are they really fighting? I’d rather fight a guy that’s stapled himself as pound-for-pound, Demetrious Johnson. I think that’s the next fight to be made after I demolish T.J. on Saturday.”

The UFC 227 pay-per-view event is set to take place on Saturday, August 4, 2018, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California with the the main card airing on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET while the preliminary card will air on FX at 8 p.m. ET and the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass.

TJ Dillashaw Promises He’ll ‘Ruin Cody Garbrandt’s Career’

TJ Dillashaw plans on ruining Cody Garbrandt’s career at UFC 227.

T.J. Dillashaw had some strong words for Cody Garbrandt heading into their bantamweight title rematch at UFC 227.

One of the most anticipated rematches in the 135-pound weight class will serve as the main event for UFC 227 a little over a week from now when Dillashaw defends the bantamweight title against former champion Garbrandt at August 4’s UFC 227 from Los Angeles, California.

Both of these men know each other quite well having trained together side by side at Team Alpha Male for the better part of their careers. That all changed, however, when “Killashaw” decided to move his camp to Colorado and continue working with Duane “Bang” Ludwig, a decision that has splintered more than a friendship.

But it’s also lead to Dillashaw knowing what’s coming from his opponents – or so he claimed:

“You kind of prepare the same for every fight,” Dillashaw told Bloody Elbow. “You add a few tricks to try and keep your opponents guessing, but that’s about it. I love rematches, though. I’ve always done great in rematches. The more I can figure out my opponent the better and I’m going to know Cody like the back of my hand. It’s going to be a good night for me.”

Despite the fact that Dillashaw and Garbrandt have spent countless hours preparing each other for battle in their Team Alpha Male days; the champion believes he is the superior fighter and knows exactly how to beat Garbrandt again:

“You always train for your opponent to be the best possible opponent no matter who it is,” Dillashaw explained. “You obviously look for their strengths and weaknesses. I know the technical difficulties [Garbrandt] has. I know where he’s good, where he’s not. But you always train for the best. You train for everything.”

“He knows I’m the better fighter,” said Dillashaw. “He’ll pump himself up. He’ll talk; that he’s great, that he’s better, and all this stuff, but he knows. He knows the truth. I’m the better all around fighter. I’m the smarter fighter. And this is a bad situation for him, to go right back into a rematch for the title.”

There is no love lost between “No Love” and “The Viper.” Both men have been vocal about their dislike for one another in the media. But Dillashaw doesn’t want to just beat Garbrandt in their rematch at UFC 227, he wants to end his career:

“I’m going to ruin his career,” Dillashaw said. “I’m going to ruin his career at this weight class. He’s already getting his second shot, he should of worried about getting better, but I don’t know if he really can. I don’t know if he’s that smart of a fighter, but I plan on ruining his career at 135.”

“This sport’s crazy, obviously anything can happen,” continued Dillashaw. “You’ve always got to be ready for it and be nervous for that fight, but he doesn’t have a chance. I’ll be ready for anything he can bring to the table. You’ve always got to expect the toughest fight, but he doesn’t have a chance.”

The second chapter in this bantamweight feud will culminate in the main event of UFC 227.

For newly re-crowned UFC bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw, a fight with flyweight kingpin Demetrious Johnson is the best fight to make.

While “Mighty Mouse” has been less than receptive to it, Dillashaw has ramped up the trash talk after once again becoming a UFC champion by stopping arch rival Cody Garbrandt the November 4’s UFC 217.

Dillashaw discussed why he thinks it’s the only fight for “Mighty Mouse” to take during an interview on The MMA Hour on Monday.

“Why not? This fight makes sense. He doesn’t have anybody and this thing should’ve happened in August. He wants a big money fight. He wants to prove that he’s the pound-for-pound king.

“This is the step. I can make the weight. I wanted to stop him from breaking the record and he wanted to break it first, so he got that out of the way, he got to do what he wanted to do and he beat the record books.

“But now it’s time to man up and get this fight going. This is a fight that fans want to see. I keep hearing them say it and everyone’s loving it, so let’s get this done. There’s no reason to be scared now, you got to break the record.”

As for the bantamweight division, Dillashaw doesn’t see a rematch with Garbrandt or Dominick Cruz anytime soon, especially considering the way in which Garbrandt was dispatched by the current champ at UFC 217 and how Cruz refused to grant Dillashaw a rematch after winning the belt in a controversial split decisions UFC Fight Night 81.

Dillashaw has remained adamant before and after winning the bantamweight belt, which has surely given him an advantage in seeking a superfight with the UFC’s most dominant champion:

“He came by when I was taking photos with the belt (at UFC 217) and he said that I did the first step,” Dillashaw said. “So in my mind, that’s him saying, ‘Let’s get this on.’ I did the first step, because he said to the media that I wasn’t worthy of a title shot, that I needed to be a champion, that he wasn’t going to fight me because I wasn’t a champion. And he came by and said that I did the first step, so I think in his mind too, this is the fight that makes sense.”

And as for his old nemesis Cruz, Dillashaw was clear that he wasn’t interested in the match up as Cruz had already denied him a rematch:

“Cruz can suck it, man,” Dillashaw said. “He’s the one who made me wait forever. He knew he should’ve given me that rematch. He was scared. He thought he was cherry-picking by picking Cody. He was trying to hold onto that belt, get as much as he could. So if it’s up to me, he can wait. He can wait as long as I did. I couldn’t care less. I mean, I do want to beat that guy. I do want to smash because I know that I can, but I don’t care what he says. I’m going for the fight that makes the most sense for me right now, and that’s Demetrious Johnson, and I’ll do whatever it takes to get it.”

Do you want to see Dillashaw challenge for the flyweight belt? Or should the new champion focus solely on his own division?

Three new champions in one night, a card chock-full of finishes; UFC 217 had it all. From longtime former welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre’s triumphant return to several other unbelievable upsets, Saturday night gave us a ton to work with.

Saturday night marked the UFC’s return to Madison Square Garden following the wildly successful UFC 205 last year, and their sophomore effort proved to be just as successful.

With so much to break down and analyze, check out our five biggest takeaways from UFC 217!

Noah K. Murray for USA TODAY Sports

5. Three New Champions In One Night

UFC 217 is one of those events that completely changed the MMA landscape in a single night.

Joanna J?drzejczyk knocked out in the first round, Cody Garbrandt knocked out in the second round, and Bisping dethroned by third-round submission. That’s a lot to process.

With Rose Namajunas, TJ Dillashaw, and GSP now champions, multiple weight classes that had perhaps gotten a bit stagnant are now wide-open for new contenders and champions to take over.

Saturday night was just one of those rare events that turned the MMA world totally upside down, which in the long run will actually prove to be a good thing for the middleweight, bantamweight, and women’s strawweight divisions.

After a thrilling knockout victory over bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt in last night’s UFC 217 co-main event, newly-minted champ TJ Dillashaw took the mic to call out flyweight kingpin Demetrious Johnson.

The two were nearly scheduled to fight at one point, and not long ago too. Dillashaw offered to fill in for Ray Borg at UFC 215 when Borg pulled out due to illness. “Mighty Mouse” declined to fight, much to UFC President Dana White’s chagrin.

With Johnson becoming more vocal about the lack of support or respect he’s getting from the UFC, White used Dillashaw’s emphatic victory at UFC 217 as an opportunity to offer “Mighty Mouse” the fight once again:

“He’s been crying for a long time for a big fight. He’s got his big fight now. You know I’m down for it because I was down for it before, but now it’s even better. They both have belts, so, yeah.”

“He’s a partner in the pay-per-view,” White said. “Let’s see what your PPV does, you’re a partner, let’s see what you make. Listen, you can’t be in a position where you’re like “I want $2 million, f*ck you, I don’t care what you make. I don’t care how much this thing sells, I just want $2 million.”

As for another one of DJ’s concerns about Dillashaw fighting him at flyweight, the newly crowned bantamweight champion says cutting down to 125 pounds won’t be a problem given his current regimen:

“The reason why I look so lean at 135 pounds is the way I work. I put muscle on, I’m not a big 135er. A walk around at 150, you know? But I stack on, I stay lean, I keep my diet, I’ve kept on my diet since The Ultimate Fighter.”
