Cody Stamann and USADA

With the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) no longer working alongside the UFC, fighters are sharing their horror stories of dealing with the organization.

Everyone from Paulo Costa, Nate Diaz, and Paige VanZant have spoken at length about USADA reps showing up at their door in the middle of the night and stalking them in the bathroom for hours at a time while attempting to collect a sample.

Speaking with The Score, UFC bantamweight standout Cody Stamann shared his own awkward incident with a new USADA employee who came knocking on his door at the wrong time.

So I grabbed my gun — a 1911 .45 handgun — off my nightstand, I ran to the front door, and just absolutely ripped the door open, just standing there completely balls-out naked. I didn’t actually point the gun at him but I had two hands on the gun, standing there in a fighting stance.

This guy turned around and he looked at me and he was like, ‘Uh, I’m USADA, I’m here to do a drug test for you.’ I saw immediately that he was a testing officer. I recognized the USADA T-shirt. I said, ‘Will you give me just one second, please,’ and he went, ‘Take all the time you need.’

I went to shut the door and he was like, ‘No, no, no, I gotta go with you.’ I was like, ‘Are you serious? OK.’ So I went to the laundry room and threw some shorts on. Instinctively, I still had the gun in my hand. He asked, ‘Will you please put that down?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, dude, my bad.’

This guy was shook. He said to me, ‘I just started working here this week.’ I was like, ‘Am I your first person?’ And he said, ‘No, you’re my second.’

I never saw the guy again. That had to have been a terrifying thing for him: a naked man pulling a gun on you. He was trying to sign his name – they have a tablet where they have to sign their name – and I could physically see his hand was shaking. I shook this guy to his core” (h/t MMA Mania).

After parting ways with USADA due to an “untenable” relationship, the UFC announced its partnership with Drug Free Sport International, a move that came with a fair amount of skepticism among fighters and fans.

As for Stamann, the 28-fight veteran holds a 7-5-1 record under the UFC banner. After earning back-to-back wins against Eddie Wineland and Luan Lacerda, ‘The Spartan’ came up short in his last outing against Douglas Silva de Andrade in May 2023.

Cody Stamann is more than prepared for a hostile reception when he faces off against Luan Lacerda at UFC 283 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Stamann, a veteran of the UFC’s bantamweight division, is set to make the trip over to Brazil in the UFC’s first return to the country since the Covid-19 pandemic. He takes on a promotion newcomer, Luan Lacerda, who made his name competing on regional shows such as LFA and Shooto Brazil.

Brazil is notorious enemy territory for any fighter coming up against a home-crowd favorite, and Stamann is ready for the hostile reception. In a recent interview with Alex Behunin of LowKickMMA, ‘The Spartan’ addressed the potential fan reaction he may receive from the Brazilian crowd, embracing the impending hostilities:

“I’ve been there before. I know what they’re gonna chant. Everybody’s going to be throwing beer at you, treating you like absolute dog s**t, and I’m excited for it. I’ve never really been in that atmosphere outside of wrestling, where you’ve got the student section that’s kinda s**ting on you, and I always loved that. I look forward to it. Everyone else was quiet and miserable on the bus ride, and I was pumped. I couldn’t wait to flip everybody off. I feel like I’m ready to do that in Brazil.”

I don’t think I’m going to go full Colby Covington, but I’mma go like halfway. I’m not gonna disrespect the Brazilian people, but I’mma disrespect Luan.”

Cody Stamann references Colby Covington’s notorious ‘Brazil is a dump’ speech

What Cody Stamann is appertaining to in the above quote is Colby Covington’s infamous post-fight speech he gave after claiming a unanimous decision victory over the Brazilian grappling phenom Demian Maia, in Brazil.

“I should’ve knocked him (Demian Maia) out. Brazil, you’re a dump, all you filthy animals suck!” Covington screamed into the mic, before going on to call out the welterweight champion at the time: Tyron Woodley.

This speech, whilst extremely distasteful, did serve as a catalyst to save Colby Covington’s UFC career. It may also serve as some indication as to the emotions non-native fighters are going through when competing against Brazilian fighters and their passionate fans.

Cody Stamann has once more called for his shot at bantamweight striker, Sean O’Malley – claiming that he “hates” the outspoken and polarizing striker, as he targets a showdown with the former off the back of a June knockout win against common-foe, Eddie Wineland.

Stamann, yet to crack the bantamweight top-15 off the back of his knockout win over Wineland, sent the veteran former WEC bantamweight champion into retirement at UFC Austin last month, landing a Performance of the Night bonus off the back of a thunderous 59-second first round knockout win.

As for O’Malley, the Montana native saw his run of three straight victories come to an end back at UFC 276 at the beginning of the month during International Fight Week, fighting to a second round official ‘No Contest’ against Brazilian veteran, Pedro Munhoz after poking the American Top Team mainstay’s eye in an unintentional foul.

Cody Stamann calls for Sean O’Malley showdown next

Sharing his disdain for the Dana White’s Contender Series alum, Stamann labelled O’Malley a “f*cking little clown” – maintaining that he has a certain dislike for him.

“I don’t know who it’s gonna be, I’ve kinda got my eye on a few guys,” Cody Stamann told Alex Behunin during a recent interview with LowKick MMA. “I’d like a name, you know – (Sean) O’Malley is always a guy who’s at the forefront [of my mind], that little f*cking clown. I hate that kid.”

“Adrian Yanez is another one,” Cody Stamann explained. “That would be a good fight – I mean, he’s a good boxer, I like his standup, but I’d love to see him fight off his back. I don’t think he can. Honestly, I think that’s a big name, a big payday for me, you know. Or, you know, anybody – I meant it when i said it. Anyone, anywhere, anytime. I really don’t give two sh*ts who it is. …”

Over the course of his Octagon tenure, Stamann has defeated Terion Ware, Tom Duquesnoy, Bryan Caraway, Alejandro Perez, and Brian Kelleher to go with his victory against Wineland last month.

Snapping a run of three consecutive fights last month at UFC Austin, bantamweight contender, Cody Stamann has admitted that his career in the sport was likely on the line against former WEC champion, Eddie Wineland – prior to a blistering first round knockout win.

Stamann, who featured on the preliminary card of the promotion’s return to Austin for a ‘Fight Night’ billed card, steamrolled former WEC bantamweight titleholder, Wineland, stopping the retiring veteran with a 59-second first round knockout win – earning him a Performance of the Night bonus subsequently.

Prior to his first round win, however, Xtreme Couture mainstay, Stamann had suffered a trio of losses to Said Nurmagomedov, surging contender, Merab Dvalishvili, and promotional alum, Jimmie Rivera.

Cody Stamann admits his UFC run was likely over with a loss in Austin

20-5-1 as a professional, Stamann landed in the promotion with a trio of eye-catching victories of his own, defeating Terion Ware, Tom Duquesnoy, and then Bryan Caraway, however, admitted that a loss to Wineland last month would have forced him to consider his career in the sport.

“Going into that fight, I knew if it was Eddie Wineland or anyone else, I was gonna knock them out,” Cody Stamann during an interview with LowKick MMA reporter, Alex Behunin. “I was just geared up, I knew what was on the line, I knew my career was on the line – if there was ever a time I needed to show up and show the athlete that I am, it was that night.

“Nah, I think that was 100 per cent, I think that was a certainty,” Cody Stamann said of his prospects of being cut from the UFC roster. “I think I almost need that pressure though, you know. I’ve been in high-stakes situations like that, you know, UFC 250 was a completely different thing – but a very emotional, high-stress situation, and I feel like that’s when I really perform at my best.”

In between a prior submission defeat to current bantamweight champion, Aljamain Sterling, and a draw with Song Yadong – Stamann landed a pair of other UFC wins against Alejandro Perez, and Brian Kelleher.
