Kamaru Usman and Colby Covington put on an instant classic in the UFC 245 main event over the weekend (Sat. December 14, 2019).

However, when it was all said and done, the champion, Usman, retained his title with a fifth-round TKO win after breaking Covington’s jaw midway through the fight. The fight was so good, however, that it’s hard to argue with the interest in seeing a rematch down the road. According to mixed martial arts (MMA) veteran Chael Sonnen, that could very well happen.

Speaking on his podcast, “You’re Welcome,” Sonnen first touched on the controversy surrounding the stoppage of the fight, which some believe was a bit premature. (H/T BJPenn.com)

“This thing did end in a little bit of controversy,” Sonnen said. “Colby certainly didn’t agree with the stoppage. I’ve seen a lot of mixed martial arts fights and I’ve seen that position. Colby’s down like on a double where he’s a little sprawled out and Kamaru’s doing a good job with the hips.

“He’s finding the target a little bit but Colby’s blocking it. I’ve just seen that position. That’s a fair statement by me and I have never seen a mixed martial arts contest end in that position. That’s a true statement by me.”

Sonnen went on to explain that he believes the interest is there for a rematch between Usman and Covington, even if it’s not immediately.

“When they pulled them apart, Colby jumped up and he wasn’t happy about it,” Sonnen said. “I don’t know how much time was left. There must’ve been right around that 60-second point and it’s all done. I guess the reason I mention the controversy is, it is very clear that Kamaru Usman is the best fighter in the world. It is as equally clear that Colby Covington is the number one contender.

“I mean this was a dog fight to the highest of levels where things did start to unravel. You had an athlete in Colby who was trying to come back. You had a referee who did a very good job. He was making a decision on fighter safety. But there was enough there that if somebody says, ‘Hey we wanna see five more rounds of that,’ whether it’s immediately next or something has to happen in between, yeah. You’re gonna have a hell of a story that was told.”

What do you think about Sonnen’s thoughts on a rematch between Usman and Covington potentially coming down the road?

UFC president Dana White wants to see Colby Covington face Tyron Woodley next.

Covington suffered a fifth-round TKO defeat to Kamaru Usman in their welterweight title fight in the UFC 245 headliner on Saturday night.

Although there was some controversy regarding the stoppage, Covington was likely to lose on the judges’ scorecards even if he did survive the last minute. That puts an immediate rematch out of the question.

However, Covington could get right back into title contention with his next fight. That’s because White wants to see him face former champion Woodley:

“I don’t have a problem with him. I don’t have a problem with Covington,” White said post fight at UFC 245 (via MMA Fighting). “I’d love to do him and [Tyron] Woodley next. That would be a fun fight, but if he has a broken jaw, he ain’t going to be around for a minute.

“After a war like this, he’s going to have to go rest, take care of himself for a while and then we’ll see what he wants to do.”

Covington and Woodley seemed to be on a collision course last year until a number of factors saw the fight never come to fruition. White played a big role in that which ultimately saw his relationship with Covington massively deteriorate.

However, the UFC head honcho has no plans on going back-and-forth with him again:

“Listen, I’ve dealt with his type a million times in the last 20 years,” White added. “You can tell he’s not happy that tonight did not go as he planned. He came out with a game plan, whatever the hell he had going on in his mind that he was going to do or whatever was going to happen and Usman stomped all over that.

“We’ll let this kid go back, heal up and figure out what’s next.”

A lot of people are rejoicing after Colby Covington’s TKO loss to Kamaru Usman at UFC 245 over the weekend (Sat. December 14, 2019).

Given the political angle of Covington’s promotional tactics, even some celebrities are celebrating “Chaos’” downfall. Add comedian Rosie O’Donnell to that list. O’Donnell, who is heavily anti-United States President Donald Trump, took to Twitter to take a shot at Covington, who has made it no secret he is a huge supporter of the President, after the loss, saying she enjoyed seeing him limp out of the Octagon with a broken jaw.

“best fight ever watching him limp out with a broken jaw #fuckoffcolby #ufc

Usman and Covington headlined the UFC 245 pay-per-view (PPV) from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The two men put on a tremendous back-and-forth bout heading into the fifth round. However, midway through the fight, Usman broke Covington’s jaw, and despite his best efforts, Covington fell late in the final round and was stopped after a barrage of strikes from the champion.

Now, Covington will likely take some time off to heal his jaw, while Usman regroups for another title defense in 2020 in a division that is full of top-tier talent.

What do you think about O’Donnell’s comments towards Covington?

Kamaru Usman had a near-perfect weekend when he defeated Colby Covington at UFC 245 on Saturday. However, he made a mistake in the post-fight presser according to Ben Askren.

Usman defeated bitter rival Covington via fifth-round TKO in what was a very satisfying win for the welterweight champion. After all, his rivalry with Covington dates back years and with all the trash talk that came his way, he was able to have the last laugh.

Many wondered if the trash talk would affect Usman and make him too emotional during the fight which could have led to a mistake. At first, “The Nigerian Nightmare” said he was completely focused — only to contradict himself later on:

“The first question to [Usman] is, ‘over the past X amount of months since this fight’s been signed, did Colby’s trash talk get to you at all,’” Askren said in a recent video (via BJ Penn). “[Usman] essentially answers, ‘no it did not, I am the most mentally tough guy in this division.’ Something to that effect.

“Then, two questions later, they ask some question — I should probably search this — about why Colby was getting the better of him early on. [Usman] said something like like ‘I got too emotional.’”

For Askren, this was clearly conflicting and ungenuine:

“Whoa, whoa, whoa,” Askren added. “You just tried to say in the first question that you don’t get shook at all and it didn’t bother you, and then two questions later you admit that you got emotional and it did bother you. It’s really simple. People don’t want to be lied to. They don’t want to be lied to! People want genuineness.”

“Funky” believes it is this sort of inconsistency that makes it hard for fans in general to endear themselves to Usman. He also offered an alternate approach:

“Listen, he would have came off a whole lot better if he would have said something really simple like ‘man, it was annoying, it bothered me, and it felt so good to punch that dude in the face, oh baby,’” Askren explained. “People would have loved it! Everyone can relate to someone that’s been in there life that annoyed the sh*t out of them, for whatever reason it is. Most people don’t get to punch that guy in the face on national TV. [Usman] got the opportunity to, but then he failed to acknowledge that that felt really good and that the trash talk did bother him.

“Within two questions, he lied about it. Then he pretty much admitted he was lying. That fakeness, that lack of genuineness, is what people can feel. Even if they can’t put it into words like I’m putting it into words for you, they feel it. That’s why they can’t relate to him. That’s why he’s not capturing the hearts and minds of fans. If he would have said ‘guys, he bugged the sh*t out of me, and that felt so good to punch him in the face. Oh my God, it felt good’… dude, they would have loved it. They would have loved it! People would have went nuts for that. But he didn’t. He lied to the people. The people felt it.”

What do you think of Askren’s critique? Looking too much into it or does he have a point?

During Kamaru Usman and Colby Covington’s UFC 245 main event bout over the weekend (Sat. December 14, 2019), the crowd began chanting “USA” in support of Covington, who also received “Colby” chants during the fight as well.

However, speaking in the post-fight press conference, Nigerian-born UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman claimed he thinks the “USA” chants were for him. Usman said he’s more American than Covington, because he feels he better embodies what it truly means to be American. (H/T MMA News)

“They was chanting USA for me,” Usman said. “Let’s be honest, I’ve said it time and time again, I’m more American than him. I am what it means to be an American. I’m an immigrant that comes here, worked my ass off tirelessly to get to the top, and I’m still prevailing. And so that’s what it means to be an American. It’s not necessarily, oh, just because you’re born here and you feel privileged is what it means to be an American.

“No. I told you, none of these guys work harder than me. That’s what it means to be an American. I work my ass off, and I’m gonna continue to work my ass off and, obviously, with good integrity. I don’t have to walk around like a punk and say certain things and abuse a whole country and abuse the whole world and talk about people and religions and things like that. I don’t have to. I’m gonna walk with integrity.

“Because at the end of the day, I want everyone that’s watching me, every eye that’s on me to look at me and say, “You know what? That’s what we want to be. That’s the example that we like. And so I’m more American than him. So when they were chanting ‘USA,’ you damn sure better believe that was because of me.”

Usman then posted the following on Twitter:

“We all bleed the same. This was also for the “UNITED” States of America!! I’m taking this belt to the whites house”

Usman finished Covington in the fifth round of their thrilling welterweight title main event after breaking the former’s jaw midway through the fight. It was an excellent showing from both men, but the champion remains on top at 170 pounds, and is now looking forward to his next challenge.

What do you think about Usman saying the “USA” chants were for him?
