The UFC’s return to Newark will be getting a huge welterweight main event.

According to a report from ESPN’s Brett Okamoto, former interim champion Colby Covington will face ex-welterweight champion Robbie Lawler in the August 3 headliner. The bout is still being finalized, but verbal agreements are in place. Initially, Covington was expected to be next in line for a title shot against new 170-pound champ Kamaru Usman.

However, that no longer seems to be the case. “Chaos” last competed when he captured the interim welterweight championship by defeating Rafael dos Anjos in June of last year. However, he was later stripped of the title due to inactivity. Speaking to Ariel Helwani, Covington offered the following statement on the Lawler matchup:

“UFC needed a main event on short notice, so I agreed to defend my title in my first defense against the last real champion this division has had,” Covington said.

As for Lawler, he hasn’t fought since his controversial submission loss to Ben Askren at UFC 235 in March. Prior to that, Lawler missed the second half of 2018 with a torn ACL. “Ruthless” has lost three of his last four fights inside the Octagon; those losses coming against dos Anjos, Askren, and Tyron Woodley.

Also on tap for UFC Newark is a great veteran clash between Jim Miller and Clay Guida.

Colby Covington has pitched a date when he thinks his next fight under the UFC banner against welterweight champion Kamaru Usman should happen.

While doing a recent interview with MMA Junkie, Covington noted that the UFC tried to pitch the title fight for the co-main event of the UFC 242 pay-per-view (PPV) event. However, Covington has different plans as he wants the fight to take place at UFC 244:

“You need to spread out the title fights. You have pay-per-views every month, so it didn’t really make sense from the get-go. It doesn’t matter where the fight’s at. That fight did get serious talks about Abu Dhabi, but I think they want to do New York now. It only makes sense to go to the Garden,” Covington said.

“There’s not a main event there yet. It’s four months away, so we have perfect time to promote it and plan it. It doesn’t make sense to have this fight anywhere but America.”

It seems like the fight is imminent, but Covington is just waiting for his turn to fight next. That doesn’t mean that he has all of the patience in the world as it’s starting to run thin. Interim lightweight champion Dustin Poirier is slated to challenge undisputed lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov at the UFC 242 PPV event. The show will take place on Saturday, September 7 at The Arena in Yas Island, Abu Dhabi.

The UFC 244 PPV event is planned to take place on November 2, 2019, at Madison Square Garden in New York, New York. For Covington, he thinks his fight with Usman is big enough for its own headliner. Time will tell whether the UFC agrees with him or not.

Ben Askren believes that he could turn out to be the next fighter to challenge for the UFC welterweight title.

Askren has already picked up a win over former welterweight champion Robbie Lawler in his promotional debut. Now, he’s slated to fight Jorge Masvidal at UFC 239. If he should get past Masvidal in his next fight then he thinks he has a shot at a title fight.

“Funky” believes that if he should have another strong showing his next fight then he could, in theory, leapfrog former interim UFC welterweight champion Colby Covington as the number one contender in the welterweight division:

“I think it is [possible],” Askren told MMA Fighting. “I don’t think people are too into Colby’s schtick anymore. They realize it’s old, it’s washed up, it’s just not that exciting. The guy is doing one of these things where you sit out and wait for a title fight and that is something I will never, ever do.

“How long ago was Colby’s last fight? Last June? What is this mother—ker going to sit out for 16 months and expect to get a title shot? The only way to stay relevant in this sport is to stay in there and keep getting after it. So yeah, if I go beat up Jorge, I’m going to have a lot more momentum. And if “Marty” (Kamaru Usman) wants to make some money, I’m sure “Marty” has a pay-per-view clause in his contract, you’re damn sure that I’m going to sell a whole bunch more pay-per-views against him than Colby would.”

UFC President Dana White has already agreed that Covington would get the next shot at welterweight champion Kamaru Usman. It should be noted that White and Covington haven’t always seen eye-to-eye.

Usman underwent double hernia surgery following his latest win in March. Now, he’s not expected to return until the latter part of the year. Thus, nothing is guaranteed in the sport of MMA.
