Leon Edwards confirms plan to defend title against Colby Covington at UFC 294 or UFC 295

Following a postponed title fight with former interim champion, Colby Covington in London later this month – undisputed welterweight champion, Leon Edwards has confirmed plans to return to the Octagon in either October or November, at UFC 294, or UFC 295, respectively.

Edwards, the current undisputed welterweight champion, minted himself as the division gold holder back in August of last year, snatching the crown from former pound-for-pound number one, Kamaru Usman with an electric high kick KO in the fifth and final round.

Returning in a title trilogy rubber match against the Nigerian at UFC 286 back in March in London, Edwards edged out the veteran former titleholder in a close, debated majority decision win on home soil.

And as a result, the Birmingham native has been tied to a potential fight with former interim gold holder, Covington – who weighed in as an official backup at UFC 286, having been sidelined since landing a grudge match decision win over the retired, Jorge Masvidal back in March of last year.

Leon Edwards confirms timeline for Colby Covington fight

Commenting on his plans for a future before the close of this year, Edwards confirmed how he expects to feature either in Abu Dhabi, UAE at UFC 294 in October, or New York City, New York at UFC 295 in November.

“I’m good, I’m back training now,” Leon Edwards told ESPN reporter, Carlos Contreras Legaspi. “I’m back in the gym, my body’s feeling good, hoping to get back in there in October of November. I think Colby (Covington) is gonna be the opponent, so it’s all good.”

“For me, [I’d rather fight in] Abu Dhabi – because it’s closer to home,” Leon Edwards explained. “But also, New York – Madison Square Garden is like a legendary arena, right? So it’ll be good to that as well so – to be fair, either or. There’s a big Jamaican population in New York, so I’d love to do that as well. Either one would be good for me.”

As for the planned November 11. card in Madison Square Garden — UFC 295 now features an official heavyweight championship fight between Jon Jones, and former two-time titleholder, Stipe Miocic.

Leon Edwards touted to defeat Colby Covington in inevitable UFC title clash: ‘His defense is much improved’

Welterweight prospect Randy Brown is backing Leon Edwards to come out on top in his highly anticipated title clash with division gatekeeper Colby Covington.

Like it or not, UFC President Dana White has dubbed Colby Covington as the next man in line for a 170-pound title opportunity. Despite making the announcement moments after Leon Edwards’ successful UFC 286 title defense against former champion Kamaru Usman, the promotion has not been able to lock down a date or location for the contest.

Edwards has previously suggested a showdown at Etihad Arena when the UFC returns to Abu Dhabi in October, but Covington is seemingly sticking to his guns about the fight taking place on American soil. No matter where it goes down, Edwards vs. Covington is expected to be a highly entertaining edge-of-your-seat scrap, even if the fight itself makes little sense to the masses.

Randy Brown Backs Leon Edwards in Showdown with ‘Motherf*cker’ Colby Covington

As for who comes out on top when they do eventually step inside the Octagon, many have suggested that Colby Covington’s ability to smother an opponent for 25 minutes will be too much for Leon Edwards to overcome. However, Randy Brown disagrees with that sentiment, believing that the vast improvement in takedown defense displayed by Leon Edwards in his trilogy bout with Kamaru Usman shows that ‘Rocky’ is more than capable of handling anything ‘Chaos’ can throw at him.

“He (Covington) presents some stuff that could give him (Edwards) trouble, but I do think he gets it done,” Brown told InsideFighting. “The way his wrestling looked last time against Usman… Leon’s grappling is much improved. He’s always been a great grappler, but his defense is much improved since the first time he fought Usman.

“We’ll see how it goes. I think that he can get it done. I would love to see him get it done. I think that he can. I’m rocking with him all the way through,” Brown continued. “But Colby’s a motherf*cker” (h/t MMA News).

Colby Covington is 2-2 in his last four outings with both losses coming against then-champion Kamaru Usman. His lone wins during that run, which stretches back to 2019, came against Tyron Woodley and Jorge Masvidal. Two fighters who are no longer part of the UFC roster and exited the promotion on matching four-fight losing streaks.

Meanwhile, Leon Edwards has won his last 11-straight, including back-to-back wins against Kamaru Usman to both capture and defend the welterweight world title.

UFC star Belal Muhammad inspired by Floyd Mayweather’s fighting style: ‘The best boxers are defensive’

Belal Muhammad recognizes that there will be a life for him after fighting and he wants to be as healthy as possible to enjoy it.

‘Remember the Name’ is fresh off an impressive unanimous decision victory over one-time UFC title contender Gilbert Burns last month, securing his spot in line for a welterweight title opportunity. When and where that takes place is yet to be determined, but Muhammad will likely be waiting a while as reigning champion Leon Edwards is first expected to defend his title against the always-outspoken and often-controversial Colby Covington.

In the meantime, Belal Muhammad is staying active in the gym and readying himself for an opportunity that many feel is long overdue. Recently, Muhammad appeared on 670 The Score, to discuss his career trajectory, including life beyond the Octagon. During their conversation, ‘Remember the Name’ showed some respect for undefeated boxing legend Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather and his style of fighting that, while not always the most exciting, favored his health and longevity above all else.

“For me, I’m a big striker. So I like to make people miss and hit them,” Muhammad said of his fight style. “Like [Floyd] Mayweather said, the point of the best boxers is that that they don’t get hit. The best boxers are defensive, right?

Belal Muhammad is Not Interested in Throwing Caution to the Wind

“I think that’s where a lot of people get it wrong,” Muhammad continued. “They want the blood and the guts, but you know there’s a life after fighting. So, you’re going to take all these big shots in a fight just to put on a fight for the fans. Be like ‘Oh yeah, I’m bleeding, this is cool!’ but after the fight, how does your body feel? How does your mind feel?” (h/t BJPenn.com).

Belal Muhammad has amassed an impressive 14-2 record inside the Octagon since making his promotional debut in 2016. ‘Remember the Name’ is currently riding a nine-fight win streak including wins over Sean Brady, Vicente Luque, Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson, and Demian Maia.

Meanwhile, the man that has seemingly leapfrogged him for a welterweight title shot, Colby Covington, is 2-2 in his last four and has zero wins against any fighter in the welterweight division’s current top-15.

Jorge Masvidal (35-17 MMA) has played down the beef between him and UFC Welterweight champion, Leon Edwards (21-3 MMA) exclaiming that the feud was never “personal”.

The one-time BMF champion recently chose to hang his gloves up at UFC 287, after going toe-toe against the brawler, Gilbert Burns (22-6 MMA).

Although Masvidal didn’t shy away from the relentless pressure of ‘Durinho’, it was evident that the 38-year-old was struggling to keep up with the pace from one of the world’s best fighters.

Unfortunately, he lost his fight against Burns via a unanimous decision and hasn’t look like the same fighter he was back in 2019.

Jorge Masvidal explains the difference between the beef he has with Leon Edwards compared to Colby Covington

Jorge Masvidal is well-known for his infamous bust up with some of the biggest names on the UFC’s roster. Whilst appearing on Jake Paul’s video podcast, ‘B.S. w/ Jake Paul’, Masvidal broke down two of his most famous beefs during his time with the UFC.

‘Gamebred’ began clarifying that he has never had anything against Leon Edwards, despite the viral altercation between the two of them at UFC London in 2019.

Although the pair continued to exchange jabs back and forth on social media throughout the years, Masvidal reaffirmed he has never held any grudges towards Edwards.

“With me and Leon, it was never personal. He just crossed a line, like, bro, I’m doing an interview, you’re trying to punk me again. That’s not going to happen. He’s already talking wild and s*** on Twitter, but I don’t have nothing personal,” Masvidal exclaimed.

Jorge Masvidal understands the fight business better than most, rivalries are part of the game. However, Colby Covington (17-3 MMA) choose to take things too far and make it personal, in spite of the fact the pair used to be best friends and teammates.

“Colby’s just a different situation. That motherf*****, I just don’t like his ass,” Masvidal expressed.

“That dude and me will never be cool, just because he brought up my kids in numerous situations,” Masvidal said. “He brought up things from my life, and that motherf***** lived on my couch for like eight months. He had like one or two pro fights, broke his hand, couldn’t f****** afford rent or nothing.

Their feud turned into a fight that headlined at UFC 272, in which Covington emerged with the win via a unanimous decision.

The issue when fighters get a bit too personal, whatever happens in the cage doesn’t necessary squash the beef.

Jorge Masvidal was also involved in an alleged assault on Covington outside a steakhouse in Miami a few weeks after their fight back in 2022. He was eventually arrested and hit with several felony charges, including aggravated battery and criminal mischief.

“Allegedly this, allegedly that,” Masvidal said. “He’s a b****! If he were here right now, he’d run the f*** out.”

By the sounds of it, the pair will be going back and forth for the rest of the foreseeable future.

Colby Covington predicts finish of Leon Edwards in UFC title fight I'm gonna nail him

Former interim welterweight champion, Colby Covington has claimed that fans and judges alike will be plotting against him during his impending title clash with Leon Edwards – predicting a finish over the current UFC titleholder.

Covington, a former interim gold holder, has been sidelined since he headlined UFC 272 back in March of last year, rebinding to the winner’s enclosure with a unanimous decision victory against Jorge Masvidal.

As for Edwards, the Birmingham native headlined UFC 286 in March, defeating common-foe and former pound-for-pound number one, Kamaru Usman in a close, majority decision win on home soil in the pair’s championship trilogy rubber match.

Expected to book his second attempted welterweight title defense before the close of this year, Edwards, a staple of Team Renegade BJJ & MMA – has insisted the UFC have yet to approach him with a fight offer to take on challenger, Covington – despite noting his interest in a return at UFC 294 in October in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Colby Covington breaks down earmarked fight with Leon Edwards

Previewing his game plan for a showdown with champion, Edwards, Covington has claimed that volume will be key in his pursuit of gold against the former, whom he plans on finishing and leaving judges out of the equation – predicting a rather biased result otherwise.

“I know where I’m good: volume,” Colby Covington said during a recent interview with MSCS Media. “Leon (Edward) – how to prepare for it, I was already preparing. Hey, I know the judges are going to be against me, the crowd’s probably gonna be against me. I gotta go finish this guy, this cannot go to the judges’ decision. So, I was training like, literally throwing 500 punches a round in training – volume, volume, and just push myself to a level I’ve never got to before.”

“Mainly, to prepare for him it’s just heavy, heavy volume, high pressure,” Colby Covington explained. “No one wants a tought fight. No one wants you in their face constantly from second one to minute 25. My biggest thing for preparing for him is just heavy volume, pressure, and I know I’m gonna nail him. I know I’m gonna break him mentally, physically – everything.” (Transcribed by MMA News)
