Joe Rogan would like to see the UFC pit Khamzat Chimaev against either Jorge Masvidal or Colby Covington.

Coming off a hard-earned victory over Gilbert Burns in April, Chimaev is set to face fan favorite Nate Diaz in the headlining bout of UFC 279 on Sep. 10 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. “Borz” had a quick rise up the ranks after joining the promotion, which is why his outing with Diaz, who is not a ranked contender, appears even more puzzling.

Joe Rogan wants to see Khamzat Chimaev vs. Jorge Masvidal or Colby Covington

In the Sep. 2 episode of his popular podcast show, Joe Rogan Experience, Joe Rogan hosted the former 170-pound champion, Kamaru Usman, after his shocking upset loss to Leon Edwards last month. Rogan talked about the two matchups he wants to see in the welterweight division and both of them include Chimaev.

“Now that fight I can get behind, more than maybe even the Nate fight,” Rogan said. “Masvidal versus Khamzat, I like that fight a lot. That’s interesting. Khamzat vs Covington is very interesting,” he added. “Yeah, (that’s the ultimate test), that’s your gatekeeper… Most people have said, before the Leon fight, that if it wasn’t for you, he would be the champion of the world. He’s that good. He’s got so much endurance man, it’s wild. He pushes a f**king crazy pace. The Woodley fight was one of the best examples. He could do it more.”

Company president Dana White had stated Chimaev vs. Diaz would be a top contender bout, but that was before the title changed hands at UFC 278. White indicated that an immediate trilogy bout between Usman and Edwards would be in the works but did not give a concrete response on what would happen to the winner of the main event this Saturday.

If Chimaev dispatches Diaz in a quick fashion, he could get paired up with a big draw like Covington or Masvidal.

UFC President Dana White says that welterweight Colby Covington is “ready to fight” following rumors that he may be out injured until next year.

In March of this year, Coby Covington and Jorge Masvidal finally squared off after their once close friendship turned into a bitter rivalry. Covington would defeat Masvidal by a wide unanimous decision but that wasn’t to be the end of the saga.

A couple of weeks following the fight, Covington was eating at a restaurant in Miami before Masvidal allegedly struck Covington several times while wearing a mask to conceal his identity.

Since the incident, Covington has been relatively silent on social media and has not partaken in any media and rumors have since flown around that he had actually suffered a serious injury as a result of the incident.

Fellow welterweight, Gilbert Burns would add to these rumors when he spoke to The AllStar, Burns would claim that Covington had suffered a broken jaw.

“That would be a dream [fighting Colby Covington]. The rumors [were] that he was very bad. He had a neck injury, the nerves were very bad — he lost a little bit of movement in his neck. He kinda broke his jaw again, he had surgery and the surgery didn’t go well. He’s still doing the PT [physical therapy], he’s not training. (h/t MMA Mania).

“If everything goes okay,” Burns continued. “He’s only back in March — that’s what I heard. I don’t know if it’s true, but I [heard] from guys that know him. I think it’s true because he’s been quiet — he hasn’t said anything. I think he’s out until March next year.”

Dana White responds

As part of the Contender Series media scrum, Dana White was questioned about Covington’s return and confirmed he would be returning soon.

“Colby wants to fight. He’s ready to fight and we’re making plans for him soon.”

If Dana White is right, who would you like to see Coby Covington face?

Former UFC welterweight title challenger, Gilbert Burns has expressed his interest in landing a potential title-eliminator against former interim champion, Colby Covington in the coming months, however, revealed that he heard the Clovis native suffered a fractured jaw recently. And may be out of action until March of next year.

Burns, the current #4 ranked welterweight contender, featured in a high-profile UFC 273 main card slot against the undefeated, Khamzat Chimaev back in April in Jacksonville, Florida – suffering a close, unanimous decision loss.

The defeat returned Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ace, Burns to the losing column after he previously handed two-time title chaser, Stephen Thompson a one-sided unanimous decision loss in the co-main event of UFC 264 back in June.

Attempting to earn a second opportunity at welterweight spoils, Burns, a staple of Kill Cliff FC challenged former champion, Kamaru Usman for gold in February of last year, dropping an eventual third round knockout despite dropping the Auchi native in the first round.

Gilbert Burns eyes future 2023 tangle with former interim champion, Colby Covington

Claiming the promotion were working on a bout between himself and Floridian veteran, Jorge Masvidal next – as well as insisting both he and Masvidal had verbally agreed to the clash, Gilbert Burns maintained that he had heard rumors Covington may be sidelined until next March after undergoing surgery to address another jaw fracture.

“That would be a dream,” Gilbert Burns said of a fight with Colby Covington during an interview with the AllStar. “The rumors [were] that he was very bad. He had a neck injury, the nerves were very bad – he lost a little bit of movement in his neck. He kinda broke his jaw again, he had surgery and the surgery didn’t go well. He’s still doing the PT (physical therapy), he’s not training.”

“If everything goes okay, he’s only back in March – that’s what I heard,” Gilbert Burns explained. “I think it’s true because he’s quiet – he hasn’t said anything. I think he’s out until March next year. Colby is always an option, you know. If you’re asking me what’s the best option for me, I’d say (Jorge) Masvidal in December or January, and Colby next after that.” (Transcribed by BJPENN.com)

Suffering a knockout defeat to now-former champion, Usman, Burns had enjoyed a run of four successive victories en route to a title shot – dispatching the quartet of Alexey Kunchenko, Gunnar Nelson, Demian Maia, and former champion, Tyron Woodley

At UFC 278, Leon Edwards shook up the MMA world, including the former number one contender, Colby Covington, who was in awe at what he saw.

Kamaru Usman was on a historic run in the UFC, just one win short of tying Anderson Silva’s record for the most consecutive wins in the organization and it looked to be a done deal as he took a commanding four rounds to one lead against Edwards. But with just 51 seconds left, Edwards pulled off one of the greatest comebacks in MMA history as he landed a clean head kick that left the former pound-for-pound king unconscious on the mat.

Not only was the comeback unbelievable, but it was downright shocking. Just take a look at Colby Covington just seconds after the KO.

Colby Covington Lost For Words After Seeing Usman Get Knocked Out

Covington has had a very public back and forth with Usman for years now, as the two first fought all the way back in 2019. The first contest between them was close until the 5th round when Usman’s power broke down Covington. However, it was clear that Covington was still the 2nd best Welterweight on the planet at the time and earned himself another crack at Usman in 2021 at UFC 268. Although Colby Covington got rocked early on in the fight, he would rally together and push Usman in the championship rounds, even winning a couple of the rounds on the judge’s scorecard.

Since then, it seemed as if a foregone conclusion that only Covington and perhaps a young contender like Khamzat Chimaev would be able to push Usman and possibly beat him, which is why Usman was such a big favorite against the British star.

With Edwards winning, it opens the door for Colby Covington to get his hands on the belt once again, as it would have been tough for him to get a 3rd shot at Usman. But currently, Covington is dealing with some medical issues that were a result of a sucker punch from Jorge Masvidal outside of a restaurant in Miami.
