The future of the UFC is looking incredibly healthy, with the potential for some superb match-ups in the coming months once things get underway again. Dana White has hinted at them, but nothing is set in stone.

In the past, though, fans of the sport have been served up some drab affairs. We’ve had matchups that simply didn’t make sense or uneven, one-sided contests where there was always going to be one winner. Hopefully, we aren’t subjected to those type of bouts in the future, especially given the current state of affairs around the various divisions. The potential is clearly there for some remarkable fights.

With that in mind, we thought we’d come up with a few potential fights of the future. Fights the fans want to see. We can’t predict the schedule, but hopefully, this is the way things will go.

Conor McGregor vs Khabib Nurmagomedov

Conor McGregor is back and raring to go. It’s no secret. But will the flamboyant Irishman look to make amends for his convincing defeat to Khabib Nurmagomedov in October 2018? That remains to be seen, especially as Khabib Nurmagomedov is set to mark his return to the Octagon with a title defence against Tony Ferguson. That’s not to say a bout with McGregor isn’t on the cards for the future, though.

Speaking recently on the possibility of another fight with Khabib, McGregor said: “I gave my respect and congrats. He won the match. Let’s see what happens next time. I’m confident we’ll get it again – let’s go again. I am humble in victory or defeat. It’s a sport at the end of the day. A gruesome sport, but it’s a sport. So I respect it. I was defeated that night.”

Given his dominant display in the first fight, Khabib is cited as 2/7 favourite in the potential match-up with most bookmakers, but keep an eye on the latest odds from MansionBet as they have comprehensive MMA betting coverage. It’s arguably tougher to call given McGregor’s clear determination to right the wrongs of last time. One thing is for sure, though, this is a fight that surely has to happen again. Make it work, Dana.

 Stipe Miocic vs Daniel Cormier

(Image via https://twitter.com/BR_MMA)

These two have already faced off twice before, which is exactly why fans are desperate to see a third and final battle to decide it once and for all. Both fighters hold a victory over the other, they have been the promotion’s top champion overall, and given the previous two fights, the idea of a third contest is simply mouth-watering.

With the so-called eye pokes from the previous two bouts hogging much of the post-fight discussions, a deciding battle between the two surely appeals. It’d be easy to promote, fans would flock in their numbers, and at the age of 40, Cormier would surely jump at the chance to bow out with a humongous victory over his nemesis Miocic.

Being the younger man, Miocic is the experts’ pick should the two meet again. It’s impossible to write off Daniel Cormier though, isn’t it?

Kamaru Usman vs Jorge Masvidal

The hottest prospect in the welterweight division, Kamaru Usman is an impressive operator. After dismantling Tyron Woodley at UFC 235, the young Nigerian successfully defended his belt against Colby Covington. Since then, a contest between him and Jorge Masvidal has been mooted, especially given the rising stock of Masvidal once again.

Should the match get made, Usman will surely be the clear favourite, but we all saw what Jorge Masvidal did to Nate Diaz at UFC 244. He’s dangerous.

Conor McGregor has been in legal trouble as of late. The Irishman has dealt with the phone incident in Miami, allegedly punching a man in a pub, and then a sexual assault case that was in the New York Times that hasn’t gone anywhere since.

So, McGregor went on ESPN and apologized for his actions as of late and said he is eager to return to the Octagon. For UFC president, Dana White, he is glad the former UFC champion apologized and assures it was not something the UFC or he told him to do.

“Conor and I talk at least a couple [of] times a month and I think he needed to do that,” White said following the Contender Series about McGregor’s apology (h/t MMA Fighting). “I didn’t tell him to do it. He did that on his own and good for him.”

Yet, what was never touched on in the interview was the sexual assault allegation against him. It was reported in late March and allegedly took place in a hotel in Dublin last December. According to the report from the New York Times, McGregor was taken into custody in January and questioned about the allegations. However, he was never arrested or charged.

Since the report, there has been no further word on it.

Now, however, Dana White was asked about it and says he doesn’t know anything about it and says Conor McGregor told him it is not him and someone else.

“I know zero about that,” White responded when asked about the sexual assault allegations. “To be honest with you, the back and forth that I’ve had with him about that, it’s not him. It’s somebody else so I don’t know.”

As of right now, Conor McGregor is not in any legal trouble for the sexual assault allegation.

What do you make of Dana White’s comments about Conor McGregor’s sexual assault allegation?

The UFC’s biggest current star is without doubt Conor McGregor. The featherweight champion has spent the last three years dominating the headlines since his debut win over Marcus Brimage. From day one ‘The Notorious’ verbally slated the division, claiming he’d behead Jose Aldo when the two finally met. At the time ‘Scarface’ was the undisputed king of the division. The Brazilian striker crossed over from the WEC and until meeting the Irishman at UFC 194, had tasted only one defeat back in 2005.

Much like with his opponents leading up to December 2015, McGregor made good on his promise to KO Aldo. 13 seconds after the fight started, the previously dominant Brazilian had big John McCarthy telling him how the fight ended. One swift and well-timed left hand to the chin had stifled the former king, and so McGregor’s rise to the top at 145 was complete. Now it was time for ‘The Notorious’ show to really hit the road.

Although the last 10 months have seen Conor McGregor go 1-1 in the octagon, the Irish striker has seen unmatched levels of fame. He’s literally everywhere right now. Hollywood movie roles beckon, countless magazine covers, numerous businesses and plenty of other highly profitable ventures highlight McGregor’s recent months. The enigmatic featherweight champion arguably doesn’t need to fight anymore, and his return to 145 pounds is by no means set in stone yet.

McGregor revealed through his website ‘The Mac Life’ and via Instagram that he’s starring in the latest addition to the Call of Duty video game series. Scheduled for release on November 4, ‘Infinite Warfare’ also features ‘Game of Thrones’ lead man Kit Harington. The multi-billion dollar series of first person shooters is arguably the most popular current video game on the market. It’s also another lucrative move for McGregor, as he puts his thumbs in yet another dollar-filled pie.

Reigning UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz has a huge week ahead, as he’ll once again put his 135-pound strap on the line in a long-awaited trilogy bout with Urijah Faber in the co-main event of June 4’s UFC 199 from The Forum in Inglewood, California.

Cruz, however, took some time out of his busy scheduled to discuss another one of the sport’s biggest names in featherweight boss Conor McGregor, a man who appears to make headlines every single day.

The Irishman was set to rematch Nate Diaz, who handed him his first UFC loss last March, in the main event of July 9’s UFC 200, but the bout was scrapped after McGregor refused to fully comply to the intense promotional demands required of him.

While not taking the side of the UFC nor the side of McGregor, Cruz admitted that he understands where the “Notorious” one is coming from:

“You can’t really side with anybody,” Cruz said recently on The MMA Hour. “I put myself in Conor’s shoes, I’ve lost a fight before. And when you lose a fight, it kind of puts you back to the drawing board. You hear that all the time, ‘I’m going to go back to the drawing board, I’m going to do this, I’m going to do that.’ When you lose a fight, you’ve got to change something. He realizes he’s human now after that loss. He realizes he can lose. He hit Nate (Diaz) with everything and the kitchen sink in that first round and Nate did not back up for one second. That’s a different type of fight.”

McGregor, a trash talking expert, jumped up two full weight classes to meet Diaz in a welterweight bout. In Cruz’s opinion, McGregor’s mental warfare simply didn’t phase the Stockton native:

“We have never seen anybody stand up to Conor McGregor’s antics in the pre-fight,” Cruz said. “Every single person he’s faced prior to Nate Diaz was broken mentally, I mean shattered mentally, before they even stepped in the cage. You can’t break Nate. He does not care. He fights for a different purpose and he’s a real OG, for lack of a better term. The guy doesn’t care. Nate, you’re not going to break him, you’re not going to get him out of the fight. You know when you’re fighting him, you’re going to be in it from the beginning until the end. You have to push the button on him, and then you realize he’s got a heck of a chin too.

“So, I get where Conor is at. He wants to put his head down, train, focus, be the best Conor he can be because of that last loss. It can shake you when you loss like that, and his mind is focused on being the best him he can be. So I understand that.”

It’s no question that McGregor is the sport’s biggest star, and simply put, he’s mastered the art of media and self-promotion. The “Notorious” one is a media machine, and it’s obvious that he wants to put all of that aside and focus on his training and tasting defeat.

Cruz essentially feels as if McGregor being so talented within the media has actually been his downfall:

“When you look at what the UFC wants, they want you to do the media,” Cruz said. “Conor is a failure of his own success. He’s so good at this media that they’re going to ask him to do a ton. But I’ll be honest, if the UFC said, ‘hey Dominick, we’re going to pay you 100 times what you’re getting paid now and you’re going to make Conor McGregor money,’ I’ll go live with Ariel Helwani for my entire camp, eat everything you eat, do every radio interview you do, go out there and be ready to fight.

“So it’s like, it’s kind of a mixed thing. He’s getting paid a lot of money to do this stuff, a lot of money, and people want to see it. He’s in high demand. So, because he’s in high demand, that makes him a failure of his own success, if you get what I’m saying.”

Over the course of just a few years, reigning UFC featherweight champion the “Notorious” Conor McGregor transcended the sport of mixed martial arts like none other (MMA), rising to the top of the fight game in rapid fashion.

It’s clear that McGregor is the UFC’s biggest star, but how did he get there?

Some would say his fighting skills, others would note his patented mic skills, as well as the promotional push he’s received.

As a fighter, the Irishman is often criticized. He’s coming off of a disappointing loss to Nate Diaz at last March’s UFC 196, and his ground game is constantly questioned, but the fact of the matter is that McGregor has indeed established himself as a legitimate fighter.

The “Notorious” one possesses a 7-1 Octagon record with six knockouts as well as a 20-3 overall professional record including 18 knockouts.

With that being said, however, McGregor’s mic skills are indeed second to none, and it could be argued that he wouldn’t be where he is without his gifted trash talk.

Let’s take a look back at some of his most memorable lines with eight of the best Conor McGregor quotes to date:
