Conor McGregor expresses interest in not only just fighting Nate Diaz for the third time but also doing it with a new title being on the line.

Fight fans have not seen Diaz compete inside of the Octagon since his rematch with McGregor back at UFC 202 when he suffered a majority decision loss which came five months after Diaz submitted McGregor in their first bout at UFC 196. However, he does have his next fight lined up as he’s slated to fight Dustin Poirier in a lightweight bout at the upcoming UFC 230 pay-per-view event.

A few weeks ago, there was a lot of talk that they will be fighting for a newly created 165-pound title at UFC 230. However, UFC President Dana White has since come out stating that’s not the case. Then the promotion decided to keep this fight as a co-headliner and went with an interesting main event.

Conor McGregor Expresses Interest

The former UFC lightweight and featherweight champion spoke with Karyn Bryant at the open workouts for UFC 229 where he talked about a wide range of topics. One of these topics was about the third fight with Diaz.

“The game is full of bums,” McGregor said (transcript courtesy of MMAFighting). “Ain’t s**t changed, really, so it’s good to be back. I’ve got that trilogy with Diaz. I will give that man a rematch. He gave me a rematch, so I’ll give him a rematch. [At] 155 [pounds], I’d imagine, but we’ll see because maybe we could spearhead a 165 pound division. I do believe we should go 145, 155, 165, 175, 185, even 195. Why not? There’s more belts.”

UFC 230 Main Event

McGregor went as far as stating that he thinks the Diaz-Poirier fight should be booked for the main event although it’s great for the women being booked in this position. A bout for the vacant UFC women’s flyweight title between Valentina Shevchenko and Sijara Eubanks is expected to serve as the event headliner.

“I think the Diaz-Poirier fight should be main event, personally. It’s great for the women, get them up there. I mean, if it’s the belt that they’re doing this for then why not add more divisions, more belts, more champions, more Pay-Per-Views with belts on the line. It’s gonna help the athletes. I believe, with weight-cutting and things like that. So maybe me and Diaz can do the trilogy at 165.”

We may have just discovered the possible date for Conor McGregor’s next fight.

A trilogy fight with Nate Diaz is currently the frontrunner for McGregor’s next fight. The belief is that the bout could sell north of 2 million buys with the bump McGregor gets from his bout with Mayweather.

As we noted earlier on the site, there was a report that surfaced over the last week that a trilogy fight between Diaz and McGregor was scheduled for the UFC 219 pay-per-view event in December in Las Vegas. However, UFC President Dana White has since taken to his official Twitter account to shoot down the rumor.

SBG Dublin head coach John Kavanagh believes that the third fight will take place in 2018, not this year. He recently did an interview during the Original Penguin AW17 collection launch to which he revealed his plans.

“If it was my choice, and I must stress that this is only my choice and that doesn’t mean it’s going to happen, it would be Nate Diaz in March,” Kavanagh said (via MMA Fighting). “That’s what I would push towards.”

“I have in my head that it would be a Paddy’s Day card in New York, Nate Diaz 3. I think that would be absolutely amazing. That’s what I would wish for. That’s what I’ll be leaning towards with my 0.1 percent influence when I meet with Conor and Audie (Attar) tomorrow. I want Diaz 3, Paddy’s Day in New York.”

The public has criticized the UFC lightweight champion for not wanting to defend his belts in the past. Kavanagh believes that McGregor is now in the position to choose his next opponent.

“At this stage, I mention Diaz and people are shouting, ‘What about Khabib?’ or, ‘What about Tony?’ … And there’s Kevin Lee and some other guys, (people say) ‘They’re due their shot!’”

Their first fight went down at UFC 196 with Diaz emerging victorious via submission (rear-naked choke).

“Really, Conor doesn’t have to do that anymore. He won the featherweight belt, interim and unified,” Kavanagh said. “He won the lightweight belt. At this stage, he’s only doing fights because they’re fun. A big fight build-up and to win that — that will do for me anyway.”

Before his boxing match with Mayweather, McGregor put on a great performance at UFC 205 which saw him claim the UFC lightweight championship by knocking out Eddie Alvarez. On the flip side, Diaz has not been seen inside the world-famous Octagon since his controversial majority decision loss to McGregor at UFC 202 in August of 2016.

“For a bunch of reasons (Diaz is the right fight). It’s not just about being the right guy — that’s all amateur level. This is professional, and it’s about entertainment.”

Nate Diaz: I’m No. 1 Pound-For-Pound, Everybody Else Ain’t Sh*t

Former UFC lightweight title challenger and fan favorite Nate Diaz likely won’t fight again until he receives a trilogy bout with reigning 155-pound champion Conor McGregor. Diaz simply doesn’t seem interested in any other bouts and he even said recently that he’s looking to get out of MMA and begin taking boxing matches.

In fact, the Stockton native recently told ESNews that he’s interested in mastering all of the arts:

“The mainstream got me as a MMA fighter, but I’m a boxer, I’m a black belt in jiu-jitsu, I do all that stuff and I want to master each thing, each sport. I want to master all of them. Even jiu-jitsu, I think I’m the best jiu-jitsu guy in the world too. I train with Kron Gracie, who is one of the best guys in the world and I train with the best boxers in the world and the best kickboxers,” Diaz stated.

“So when I hear boxers say their opinion or jiu-jitsu guys say their opinion, I’m better than everybody at all these things, so that’s just what I’m thinking about that.”

As far as his rivalry with McGregor goes, the two faced off twice in 2016, first at UFC 196 where Diaz submitted the Irishman and second at UFC 202 where McGregor picked up a closely contested majority decision victory. Diaz, however, feels as if won both fights and actually feels as he’s the No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter in the world:

“How come I’m not even in the pound-for-pounds too? I’m like, I beat the #1 pound-for-pound guy. He’s #1 right?” Diaz asked about McGregor, who is currently ranked #2 in the UFC pound-for-pound rankings. “Ok, so I beat him twice and I can’t even get a #9 spot? How the f**k does that work? There’s no logic in this shit. I’m #1. Pound-for-pound, I’m #1 and everybody else, you guys ain’t shit. No one fought as much as me. I have the record for most fights in the UFC, landed the most punches, got the most pay-per-views. I hold the record,” Diaz claimed.

“And all the fighters, they’re so stupid. They’re scared to, they don’t event want to say my name because no one wants to fight. But guess what, it’s all good. I don’t want to fight you little bitches either.”

Diaz has said before that he’s the best fighter in the world, but it’s a statement I’d have to assume many don’t agree with. What are your thoughts?

At this point, it seems as if Conor McGregor will always have doubters, but we’ve also learned that he often silences these doubters, and he did just that at Nov. 12’s UFC 205 when he scored a dominant knockout victory over Eddie Alvarez to become the first fighter in promotional history to hold two titles simultaneously.

As always, McGregor now has a lot of options waiting for him, and it’s unclear what his next move will be, but we can take the time to speculate on how his future will play out. With that being said, let’s take a look at five potential opponents who could perhaps stop the motor-mouthed Irishman:

Khabib Nurmagomedov

Starting at lightweight, McGregor could potentially next defend his newly acquired 155-pound strap against undefeated top contender Khabib Nurmagomedov, and if he does, he may have his hands full.

“The Eagle” is the owner of an incredibly impressive 24-0 professional record that includes 8 knockouts and 8 submissions. He’s also 8-0 in the UFC.

The main reason why Nurmagomedov may have a strong chance to defeat McGregor is due to his world classing grappling skill set. The Russian is without question one of the best wrestlers in the UFC, and he has found success dragging his opponents to the mat where he is relentless with ground-and-pound and submission attempts. Wrestling has always appeared to be the “Notorious” one’s weak point.

On the contrary, however, Nurmagomedov has shown that he’s hittable, and if McGregor’s left hand lands, “The Eagle” could find himself in trouble.

Conor McGregor made history at last weekend’s (Nov. 12, 2016) UFC 205 from Madison Square Garden when he knocked out Eddie Alvarez to become the first fighter in promotional history to hold two titles at one time, but not everyone was impressed with the Irishman’s achievement, especially Nick Diaz.

Apparently McGregor was at 1 Oak Nightclub earlier this week celebrating his victory at the same time as Diaz was in attendance. The Stockton native documented the experience on his snapchat, courtesy of TMZ Sports, and he had some choice words for the “Notorious” one:

“I was already a two-weight world champion, bitch,” Diaz said.

Diaz, a former Strikeforce welterweight champion, recently finished serving out a suspension handed him to him by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) after testing positive for Marijuana in January 2015, but he does not currently have a fight booked. His younger brother Nate does indeed have a history with McGregor, however, as the two have done battle twice thus far with the younger Diaz brother submitting the Irishman back at UFC 196, and McGregor scoring a majority decision victory in the rematch at UFC 202.

With the “Notorious” one now holding the lightweight title, a trilogy bout between him and Nate Diaz is a real possibility. Would you like to see the two run it back once again?

The “Notorious” Conor McGregor had a lot to celebrate after UFC 205, which took place on Saturday (Nov. 12, 2015) night from the famed Madison Square Garden in New York.

After all, the motor mouthed Irishman put on a spectacular performance in the evening’s main event, demolishing Eddie Alvarez in the second round to become not only the undisputed lightweight champion, but also the first fighter in promotional history to hold two titles in different weight classes at one time.

After his historic victory, McGregor hosted his after party at a club in New York City according to MMAJunkie, and apparently McGregor’s old rival Nate Diaz took the time to show up. The two seemed to avoid each other, but TMZ was able to capture footage of Diaz making an appearance.

Check out the clip below:

McGregor and Diaz first met back at UFC 196 in March 2016 when Diaz shocked the world by scoring a second round submission victory over the “Notorious” one. McGregor was then obsessed with a rematch and the two ran it back at August 20’s UFC 202 when McGregor was able to score a majority decision victory.

After the rematch, the Irishman said that a trilogy bout would take place down the line, and perhaps there’s no better time given the fact that he now holds the 155-pound strap. After all, Diaz is ranked No. 4 at lightweight, and he sure did his part in drumming up interest for a third bout.

Would you like to see McGregor and Diaz square off once more?
