The UFC 196 main event is going to be madness. Conor McGregor vs. Nate Diaz at welterweight, expect many middle fingers…

As the UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos broke his foot one week ago, we are now just five days away from seeing Conor McGregor face Nate Diaz. The UFC 196 main event is perhaps less meaningful, but maybe equally or more fun than the original booking, it really all depends what you look for in a fight. For fans of attitude and trash talk, this is a great one, but let’s look at how they stack up in the octagon.

Conor McGregor, for once, will be at a reach disadvantage against the naturally bigger Nate Diaz, by two inches. The Stockton bad boy is three inches taller, so it will certainly be intriguing to see how ‘The Notorious’ deals with a fighter that also uses range well and is longer than anyone he’s faced.

Physicality aside, we have an interesting pairing of styles. On the one hand, with McGregor, you have a very diverse strategy, in the form of intuitive movement and body shapes, as well as the ability to strike on the front or back foot, which could prove pivotal. In terms of arsenal, McGregor has an in depth set of tools and likes to throw spinning kicks as well as power punches and anything in between. Diaz is more of a precise boxer, and the performance he put in against Michael Johnson is a perfect example of how effective Diaz can e when he utilizes his length properly.

The big question in this fight is will Diaz be able to take the power strikes of McGregor as he’s done with opponents in the past? Another factor that could quite easily win this fight is the defense of McGregor, as well as his footwork, which will be key in overcoming the range of Diaz. We saw in the Josh Thomson fight that good footwork and head kicks can unravel a taller fighter, but Diaz was also in pretty corny shape that night.

DiazRipped

If the ripped and focused Diaz that dominated Michael Johnson in December shows up against McGregor on Saturday March 5, this could well be either man’s fight for the taking. One major advantage that Diaz holds over McGregor though? The grappling, as the Cesar Gracie Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt has shown in past fights, he can be a nightmare even for accomplished ground fighters.

So, who you got?

Although fans won’t get what they were originally promised at March 5’s UFC 196, which will go down at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, the masses seem to be overly joyed with what we have now received.

After lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos pulled out of his bout with featherweight kingpin Conor McGregor, brash and outspoken bad boy Nate Diaz stepped up on just over a week’s notice.

McGregor and Diaz, two of the sport’s most highly touted trash talkers, have had some bad blood in the past, specifically when Diaz went on a rant about the Irishman after his UFC on FOX 17 victory over Michael Johnson.

The Stockton native repeatedly called the “Notorious” one out, and Diaz obviously has gotten what he’s wanted.

The two men met face to face at a press conference in California yesterday, going back and forth in epic war of verbal attrition.

While that frenzy probably did enough to hype up fans for the fight, the UFC has continued to promote the short notice bout with two official UFC 196 promo videos.

UFC lightweigh/welterweight Nate Diaz has been around the block and has finally come full circle with the biggest fight of his career. It comes at the cost of Rafael dos Anjos vs. Conor McGregor though, as the original UFC 196 main event was snubbed due to the lightweight champion breaking his foot. In stepped Diaz, and the rivalry between the two biggest trash talkers in MMA took centre stage.

As it turns out, the beef between the two is rather entertaining, especially considering Diaz’s explicit post fight rant towards ‘The Notorious’ after the win over Michael Johnson. But there’s a lingering question, or two part quandary if you will, firstly is Nate going to be in shape, and secondly how does he plan on beating the outspoken and talented Irish striker?

Luckily for us, we have an insight in to both questions, courtesy of the Instagram accounts of Sean Cunningham of abc 10 news, and also a random dude.

OK, so first up here’s Sean Cunninghams interview snippet with Nate Diaz, where the infamous Stockton brawler describes how he plans on beating Conor McGregor:

Interesting….

Now, if you’ve been following the beef between McGregor and Diaz, you’ll know that photos of a rather soft looking Diaz emerged in the recent days. Taking the fight on 12 days notice is risky for any fighter, but to come in out of shape could prove extremely costly.

Well, thanks to of one ‘Yanyangos’ we can see how Diaz looks just one week from the fight.

Dana White: Nate Diaz Isn’t Coming In Out Of Shape

After lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos pulled out of his scheduled bout with featherweight champion Conor McGregor earlier this week, fan favorite Nate Diaz stepped up on extremely short notice to meet the “Notorious” one in the main event of March 5’s UFC 196.

McGregor, the 145-pound champion, was originally set to fight dos Anjos at 155-pounds, but his fight with Diaz will now take place at 170-pounds.

Apparently there was issues with Diaz getting down to lightweight on such short notice, and the two agreed to compete at welterweight.

The weight issues and the short notice may lead some to believe that the Stockton native isn’t in the best shape, but UFC president Dana White assured LA Today that Diaz is in tip top condition and ready to go:

“Nate Diaz has been training for a triathlon,” White revealed. “Nate Diaz is in phenomenal shape right now.

“So he’s not coming in out of shape. He’s in phenomenal shape right now.”

Continuing on, White admitted that featherweights Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar were called first, but neither man was fit to compete, leading the UFC to bring in Diaz for the blockbuster event:

“We called a lot of people. Our first choices were Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar. Neither guy could do the fight. Frankie Edgar’s going crazy because I said he couldn’t do the fight. He’s injured. He’s injured and couldn’t take the fight,” White clarified.

“This business is a business of opportunity. When opportunity knocks, you jump on it or you don’t. In a perfect world, you’ve had six to eight weeks to train, you know the guy you’re fight and you have no injuries and everything goes perfectly. Nate Diaz and a lot of other guys, too — Urijah Faber was on the list, Anthony Pettis, “Cowboy” Cerrone — but at the end of the day, Nate and Conor really want to fight.”

McGregor’s title was never on the line at this event, and he won’t be fighting for a second title anymore either. At the end of the day, however, White claims that this fight isn’t about belts:

“This isn’t about numbers or belts,” White said. “It’s about two guys who want to fight.”

Which illustrious trash talker will come out victorious next week?

The mixed martial arts (MMA) world was turned upside down by yesterday’s (Wed., February 24, 2016) UFC 196 press conference between two of the game’s best trash talkers in Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz.

True to form, it was McGregor that kept the laughs rolling with some truly over-the-top trash talk where he accused Rafael dos Anjos and Frankie Edgar of having ‘sore vaginas’ for not being able to fight him while injured. As far as the man he was actually fighting was concerned, McGregor didn’t waste any time in making it personal.

Stating that he actually liked Diaz, McGregor used a backhanded jab to poke fun at Diaz’ thug persona and the somewhat contrasting fact that he makes extra money off of seminars:

“I honestly like Nick’s little bro,” McGregor said. “He’s like a little cholo gangster from the hood, but at the same time, he coaches kids Jiu-jitsu on a Sunday morning, and goes on bike rides with the elderly!

“He makes gun signs with the right hand, and animal balloons on the left hand. You’re a credit to the community.”

The words had the fans laughing hysterically, but not surprisingly, others were offended by the smack talk, which they viewed as based on race.

A TMZ Sports reporter questioned McGregor as he walked out of the event, and ‘The Notorious’ was none too pleased with the wording of the inquiry:

Reporter: “You called him a cholo in there. That’s kind of racially motivated. Did you mean to say it like that?”

McGregor: “Mate, shut the f*** up with that. Remember that Jesus s*** you brought up? Such a stupid question.”

Reporter: “People wanna know that.”

McGregor: “You’re an idiot.”

But McGregor didn’t do much to disprove the theories that he’s racist in his trash talk, making a post on Instagram that featured his staredown with Diaz with a controversial caption, ‘I see a fajita’:

I see a fajita.

The two sides are undoubtedly going to be polarized over this one, with one side believing McGregor to truly be racist and out of line, while the other side will think that he’s just having fun hyping a fight and those that believe he’s racist are being overly politically correct.

It seems as if many issues in our society, and not just in fighting, are coming down to this unfortunate dichotomy, but as is normally the case, perhaps the truth is somewhere in between. Which side are you on?

Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz might well represent the biggest pairing of trash talk artists in mixed martial arts history. The two have a long record of throwing smack talk as well as hard punches at their opponents, and already we’ve got some golden moments fro the eventful UFC 196 presser. The younger of the Diaz brothers and the UFC featherweight champion McGregor traded barbs for around 45 minutes before facing off in an intense staredown.

Now all that’s left is 10 days of madness before they collide in the UFC 196 welterweight main event. In the time between you can expect none stop shots being fired between both camps, and now Nick Diaz has emerged to get his opinion heard. Using his Twitter account, the older of the Diaz brothers posted the following image:

Shots fired! Nick Diaz, also known for his epic trash talk, is expected to make a UFC comeback at some point this year when his ban for an allegedly failed drug test for marijuana is served. Does he make a valid point here? It looked as though McGregor was winning the fist war of words with Nate Diaz, until the Stockton bad boy pulled out some classic lines, including the one pictured above.

With so much on the line for both men, even without a title in sight, you can expect the mind games to only get bigger and more personal as the final days to March 5 count down.

In case you missed it, our in house video editor made this re-enactment of Rafael dos Anjos injuring his foot, and it’s pretty hilarious. Check it out after this cool fan made UFC 196 poster:
