Islam Makhachev pitches team vs. team street fight with Conor McGregor in lieu of an Octagon clash

Islam Makhachev is more than happy to fight Conor McGregor, but he doesn’t want to do it inside the Octagon.

On June 1, the reigning lightweight world champion will put his 155-pound title on the line when he steps into the main event spotlight at UFC 302 in New Jersey for a showdown with division fan favorite Dustin Poirier. Ahead of his third defense, the ‘Dagestani Destroyer’ has been making the rounds, offering his thoughts on the new UFC gloves and celebrating 50 clean drug tests.

Islam Makhachev

Along the way, Makhachev also addressed the ongoing rivalry with Irish megastar Conor McGregor. Recently, ‘Mystic Mac’ made some pretty disparaging remarks about Makhachev and his team, prompting the Dagestani to snap back.

In an interview with ESPN’s Marc Raimondi, Makhachev suggested that instead of a one-on-one fight with McGregor in the cage, they could each bring their teams and have a good old-fashioned Anchorman-style street brawl.

“I want when we meet [Conor McGregor’s] team, and we all team, in the street somewhere, and we have good fights,” Makhachev said. “You know, because we all have many, many big experiences in the street. We just want to meet them and finish all talks, team vs. team. It’s going to be more interesting. Because already Khabib beat him in the cage, beat his corner. But team vs. team, maybe we can make ‘Ultimate Fighter.’”

Perhaps the UFC could take a page of out DAZN’s book and put together their own 5 vs. 5 event on pay-per-view.

Conor McGregor Returns to the Octagon Four Weeks After Islam Makhachev’s latest title defense

As Makhachev marches toward his title tilt with ‘The Diamond,’ Conor McGregor has been dancing the night away in preparation for his upcoming clash with former Bellator MMA champion ‘Iron’ Michael Chandler on Saturday, June 29.

Conor McGregor

It will be McGregor’s first time competing since suffering a nasty leg injury during his trilogy bout with Dustin Poirer in July 2021. In the years since, McGregor has stayed in the spotlight, regularly calling out fighters he’ll never compete with, buying into Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship, and making his feature film debut in a remake of the 1989 action classic Road House.

Initially, McGregor was listed as a -115 favorite on DraftKings, but with the Irishman’s recent late-night outing, fans appear to be losing faith. Currently, the former two-division champ is sitting at -102 compared to Chandler who is now a slight favorite at -118.

Dustin Poirier picks matador Conor McGregor to finish Michael Chandler at UFC 303 he's gonna stop this guy

Ahead of his own return at UFC 302 this weekend, Dustin Poirier is picking his former-foe, Conor McGregor to topple another prior opponent, Michael Chandler at UFC 303 at the end of next month, claiming the latter has an ability to find himself in needless trouble through his foot work.

Poirier, a former interim champion at the lightweight limit, returns this weekend at UFC 302, attempting to strike undisputed gold at the third time of trying, as he takes on pound-for-pound number one, Islam Makhachev.

And fighting McGregor three times during their distinct Octagon rivalry, Poirier handed the Dubliner a first round doctor’s stoppage TKO loss back in 2021, with McGregor fracturing his left tibia and fibula in their trilogy rubber match at UFC 264.

And in November of the following year, Lafayette fan-favorite, Poirier ended the surge of the previously mentioned, Chandler – snatching a third round rear-naked choke submission win in their UFC 281 clash in Madison Square Garden.

Offering his pre-fight analysis of McGregor’s return to welterweight against Chandler next month at UFC 303 during International Fight Week, Poirier claimed the Dubliner should find enough success against the ex-Bellator MMA star to land a finish, claiming Chandler needlessly puts himself in danger.

“Both of these guys’ last fight was me,” Dustin Poirier told First Take during a recent interview. “(Michael) Chandler has had a little bit of a layoff [since] we fought. From my experience being in there with him and just knowing the sport, if Conor (McGregor) is anywhere similar to where he was before the injury with his timing, with his accuracy, the stylistic matchup up with Michael Chandler? I think (McGregor) clips him.”

“Chandler covers too much distance not properly, not the best footwork, lunging in with shots, and that’s how you get countered,” Poirier explained. “That’s how – if Conor’s the matador, and has the same timing and pop that he had before the injury, Conor’s gonna stop this guy.”

Do you agree with Dustin Poirier’s prediction for McGregor x Chandler?

Makhachev, the current undisputed lightweight champion and pound-for-pound number one ranked fighter, has been sidelined since he turned in a one-sided first round high-kick knockout win over Alexander Volkanovski in October of last year in the pair’s short-notice title fight rematch.

And posing for pre-fight photos donning his championship belt and sporting the glove-colored Octagon gloves, fans on social media appeared to point to a potential health concern for Makhachev ahead of the bout, noticing some discoloring and a sizeable indent on the champion’s left leg.

Alexander Volkanovski says he’s staying ready as he’s open to filling in at UFC 303 to face Conor McGregor in case something happens to Michael Chandler.

Volkanovski has not fought since February when he got knocked out by Ilia Topuria to lose his featherweight title. After the loss, Volkanovski said he was going to take time off to let his brain heal.

But, Volkanovski is back in the gym and says he’s ready to step in at UFC 303 if needed.

“You find me an exciting fight, maybe in the lightweight division, or something like that, that’s fun, maybe. I don’t want to wait too long… I mean I’ve told myself I wouldn’t do it, but to capitalize on a massive opportunity, lightweight because I know featherweight is going to be there, against Conor McGregor I still probably would, you just put that scenario there, maybe I will,” Alexander Volkanovski said to The AllStar.

If Chandler does have to pull out of his UFC 303 fight against McGregor, several fighters would be jumping at the chance to secure that fight. But, Volkanovski says he would be open to that fight, as he knows him vs. McGregor would be a fight many fans want to see given both are former featherweight champs.

Alexander Volkanovski has shared his prediction for the UFC 302 lightweight title fight between Islam Makhachev and Dustin Poirier. Volkanovski fought Makhachev twice for the lightweight title so he is familiar with him.

With Volkanovski having experienced what Makhachev is like in there, he expects the champ to retain his belt with a stoppage win over Poirier.

“Islam’s going to be too good,” Volkanovski said on his YouTube channel. “I think he’s too safe of a fighter to make mistakes where he’s going to get caught against someone like Dustin Poirier. Dustin Poirier is a great fighter. I just think it’s a hard fight for anybody and I don’t see anyone beating Islam for a while – unless they catch him, right?.. I think Islam is that good where it’s going to be a finish. I think it’s going to be a submission finish.”

Makhachev is the sizeable -625 favorite to defeat Volkanovski.
