A report has surfaced from ESPN’s Darren Rovell this evening (Tues., May 10, 2016) the UFC’s parent company Zuffa, LLC is in talks to sell the company according to sources close to the situation.

According to the report, multiple bidders have made offers in regards to purchasing the promotion including WME/IMG, China Media Capital, The Blackstone Group and Dalian Wanda Group with the Dalian Wanda Group appearing as the leader at the moment.

The Chinese-based organization is owned by the richest man in China, Wang Jianlin, and has recently began to make a slow and steady entry into the booming sports industry.

In recent memory, it seems as if the idea of the UFC being sold has become an increasingly popular one, although now possibly reaching a new height.

Dave Sholler, Vice President of Public Relations for the UFC, commented on the reality of the situation, although adding relatively no insight:

“As a private company, we don’t discuss speculation or rumors related to our business,” said Sholler.

The UFC is indeed a private organization under parent company Zuffa, LLC. Brothers Lorenzo and Frank Fertita own upwards of eighty percent of the company while UFC President Dana White as well as the Abu Dhabi government have stakes as well.

Given the private nature of the organization, financial records aren’t normally released, although it is well-known that the UFC is coming off of one of its best years to date in 2015, and has seemed to keep that trend going in the first half of 2016 on the coat tails of pay-per-view (PPV) superstar and reigning featherweight champion Conor McGregor.

With that being said, one would have to think that a deal to sell the world’s largest mixed martial arts promotion would be a monumental one to say the least.

How do you see this situation playing out?

According to a report by ESPN, the UFC is in advanced talked to have new owners.

The report states that four bidders have submitted bids for the organization, which Lorenzo and Frank Fertitta hold majority stake in. The two brothers, along with Dana White and Flash Entertainment are joint owners.

“As a private company, we don’t discuss speculation or rumors related to our business,” UFC vice president of public relations Dave Sholler said.

Chinese-based Dalian Wanda Group is believed to be the leader with a bid between $3.5-4 billion. Chariman Wang Jianlin is the richest man in China, worth nearly $35 billion.

Last year, Wanda bought 20-percent of soccer power Atletic Madrid and is a FIFA partner. They also are owners of Legendary Entertainment, a major Hollywood film studio.

Along with Wanda, WME/IMG, The Blackstone Group and China Media Capital are believed to be the other bidders.

The UFC was founded in 1993 by Art Davie, Campbell McLaren, Rorion Gracie and Bob Meyrowitz. In 2001, the Fertittas bought the UFC for $2 million and created Zuffa, LLC, which has controlled the promotion since.

Under the guidance of the Fertittas and White, the promotion has grown into a major force. They have purchased several other MMA promotions along the way and continue to build UFC Fight Pass as an all-digital service.

The situation surrounding the UFC featherweight division is complicated right now, and it’s all because of their champion Conor McGregor. The self proclaimed face of the UFC hasn’t made his first defense of the title he snatched from Jose Aldo at UFC 194 last December, and by all accounts doesn’t look like he’s going to any time soon. After jumping up in weight to face Rafael dos Anjos at UFC 196, ‘The Notorious’ instead ended up at welterweight to face RDA’s replacement Nate Diaz. This is where the whole thing got really messy.

Diaz handed McGregor his first UFC loss, albeit not in his championship division, but still submitting ‘The Notorious’ after a very exciting two rounds. The common trail of thought was that the featherweight division was next for the Irish striker, but alas the announcement of his UFC 200 rematch with Diaz was only weeks in the making.

Suddenly Nate Diaz was a superstar, and McGregor, although humble in defeat, was subject to a ton of criticism from fans. Then events took another turn in this ongoing saga, as McGregor was pulled from the monster PPV card for not attending his first media tour for the event. Then, without a fight booked, ‘The Notorious’ would go on a social media tirade that lasted two weeks, first retiring, then announcing he was back on UFC 200, before fuelling rumours of a boxing match with Floyd Mayweather.

Counter arguments flew in left, right and centre about Conor McGregor’s heavily rumoured fight with Floyd Mayweather, but the boxing greats admission of talks with the Irish MMA star seemed to keep this fire burning.

Joe Rogan recently made his prediction of the potential ‘MoneyMac’ fight, claiming Conor could last 12 rounds with Mayweather, and now his good friends Brendan Schaub and Bryan Callen have opined on the potential super fight.

The last few weeks have been rife with crazy reports and headlines surrounding current UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor. His brash and outspoken style until this point has been limited to pre-fight hype periods and keeping interested fans in the loop on his plans between bouts. Now, his antics outside the octagon seem to be far more outlandish, and also very much against the promotion’s wishes by all accounts.

It all started with a retirement announcement by McGregor, which was later revealed to be false but also in connection to some contractual disputes. ‘The Notorious’ didn’t wish to attend the first UFC 200 media conference for his rematch with Nate Diaz, and so he was later pulled from the milestone pay-per-view event. The madness didn’t stop there though.

Conor McGregor..

The self proclaimed face of the UFC was beginning to become agitated, as was obvious by his Twitter rants about PPV numbers declining at UFC 200, and also his further false announcement of being reinstated in his second bout with Diaz. So what was going on with the former company man? That was the question, and it still hasn’t fully been answered, then came the Floyd Mayweather news.

Conor McGregor Floyd Mayweather

Out of the blue emerged rumours that McGregor and boxing great Floyd Mayweather had nearly finalized a deal for a super fight allegedly worth a billion dollars. The MMA and boxing worlds were thrown in to a frenzy, but credible media sources such as Ariel Helwani denied the credibility of the reports, and UFC president Dana White was quick to shoot down these rumours as ‘gutter journalism.’

After hearing from many people connected to both fighters, finally Floyd Mayweather Jr himself has spoken up…

Former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Holly Holm continues to deal with what some would call a controversial choice when she decided to trust the word of Lenny Fresquez as her full-time manager when she made the transition from boxing to MMA.

In the eyes of some, like UFC President Dana White, Fresquez is vaguely akin to Screech from Saved By The Bell; not many people care for him, but he’s always around because he’s friendly with the important people.

Fresquez is no stranger to making headlines, but it’s generally for all the wrong reasons. If you’re wondering why his name is currently ringing a bell, it’s most likely due to his recent verbal tussle with Dana White over his alleged “mismanagement” of Holm’s contract and fight schedule.

Earlier this year, after Holm’s November 2015 decimation of then-champion Ronda Rousey, Fresquez and White experienced some discord over against whom Holm should make her first title defense, Miesha “Cupcake” Tate or a rematch with “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey.

Fresquez, as any competent manager would, wanted what his client wanted; what they thought was best for Holm. They wanted to stay active and take the best, most challenging fight available to keep her sharp for her ‘eventual’ title rematch with “Rowdy.” That, as history shows, happened to be Miesha Tate, which turned out to be a very poor decision.

But as they say, hindsight is always 20/20.

White, on the other hand, wanted what any sane and savvy businessman/promoter would want; for the fighter that dethroned the UFC’s golden queen to await the rematch that would surely turn out to be not only a behemoth moneymaker, but a pre-fight build-up unprecedented by any other blockbuster fight in UFC history. In other words, the company — and both fighters involved — would make a ton of cash.

Unswayed by White’s insistence, Fresquez and Holm opted to stay active and give themselves a good old fashioned warm-up fight against Miesha Tate, a useful practice bout before she “inevitably” stepped back into the cage to defend the title she pried from the ice-cold clutches of Rousey.

Unsurprisingly, “Cupcake” did not take very well to this news, and deservedly so, she aired her frustrations to Joe Rogan while a guest on his podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience, on Thursday (May 5, 2016).

The UFC did not want that fight to happen. Dana flew out to Albuquerque and told them ‘don’t fight Miesha Tate…Ronda’s the money fight.’ They wanted the [Holm vs. Rousey] rematch to be the first [title] defense. And Holly’s manager told him ‘we want Miesha Tate’, Dana said he threw up his hands and was like ‘are you f*cking kidding me, other than Ronda she’s been the baddest for years now and you want to take her lightly? You think you’re just going to walk through her?’ And he [Fresquez] was like ‘yeah we got this, she’s going to be a tune-up fight. He told Dana that I was going to be a tune-up fight…he’s an idiot.”

“Cupcake” was spot on. She submitted “The Preacher’s Daughter” via rear-naked choke late in the fifth round of their co-main event title fight at UFC 196 on March 5, undoubtedly using the motivation provided by Fresquez’s patronizing words to squeeze just a little bit tighter and secure her astonishing victory.

Let this be a lesson to all managers (and fighters) out there, that any fighter skilled and tough enough to make it all the way to the most talent-rich, prestigious organization in the world is not a tune-up fight and should never, ever be taken that lightly.

Originally, UFC featherweight champion the “Notorious” Conor McGregor was scheduled to headline July 9’s blockbuster UFC 200 card from Las Vegas, Nevada in a highly-anticipated rematch against Nate Diaz, the man who submitted him in a welterweight bout back at March 5’s UFC 196.

Coming off of his first Octagon loss, McGregor apparently wanted to put his sole focus on his training rather than on the hectic media obligations he had become accustomed to doing on his way to global stardom.

Ultimately, the “Notorious” one opted not to leave his training camp in Iceland and head to Las Vegas for promotional responsibilities, leading UFC president Dana White to pull him from the card, and essentially scrap his rematch with Diaz all together.

Despite the stacked nature of UFC 200, the card was lacking a main event with the company’s biggest star being taken off the card.

Soon after the announcement, however, the promotion announced that reigning 205-pound title holder Daniel “DC” Cormier would finally once again meet former divisional kingpin Jon “Bones” Jones in the evening’s main attraction.

The two first met back in January 2015 with Jones scoring a clear cut unanimous decision victory. Legal issues later in the year, however, forced the UFC to strip Jones of his title, giving Cormier the opportunity to fight for and win the vacant strap at April 2015’s UFC 187.

Jones has since been reinstated, and was recently victorious in his return bout over Ovince St. Preux, winning the interim title in the process.

“Bones” seemingly couldn’t be any happier with the situation even given the promotional requirements for the massive card. Recently taking to his official Instagram account, the former champion posted a video of him shooting for UFC 200, thanking McGregor in the process:
