It looks like the drama surrounding the next UFC light heavyweight title fight is over.

Champion Daniel Cormier announced on this evening’s episode of “UFC Tonight” that he will be facing top contender Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson at December’s UFC 206 from Toronto. Dana White had speculated that Johnson could fight interim champion Jon Jones, but with “Bones” uncertain suspension status still up in the air, it appears the promotion went with what many felt was the clear consensus choice.

The decision is hard to argue with from a pure fighting standpoint, as “Rumble” has knocked out three straight top contenders in Glover Teixeira, Ryan Bader, and Jimi Manuwa after Cormier submitted him in the third round of their impromptu light heavyweight championship bout in the main event of May 2015’s UFC 187. That fight only came about when Cormier, who had lost to Jones by unanimous decision earlier in the year, filled in after the dominant but troubled MMA legend was arrested for a disturbing hit-and-run in his adopted home of Albuquerque.

Cormier was set to finally rematch Jones at April’s UFC 197 but was injured, and their long-held rivalry took yet another turn for the strange when Jones tested positive for estrogen blockers just three days prior to their rescheduled main event at July 9’s anticipated UFC 200. “Bones” still awaits his punishment and his hearing was postponed today, but the former champ believes he’ll receive a lighter sentence due to having failed the tests because of sexual performance drug Cialis.

Cormier fought all-time great former middle champ Anderson Silva as a late replacement, and was thrust into a rock and a hard place when he used his Olympic-level wrestling to win a safe, uninspired unanimous decision over “The Spider.” Prior to his latest back-and-forth with Jones, Cormier defended his title in one of the best fights of last year against Alexander Gustafsson five months after he originally beat ‘Rumble’ for the belt.

It remains unknown whether or not Cormier vs. Johnson II will headline the event, which takes place on December 10, from the Air Canada Centre, as longtime former welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre has been rumored to be making his long-awaited return at the event, although nothing has been made official.

That’s left current champion Cormier angling for a bout with Anthony “Rumble” Johnson, the man whom he beat to originally win the the title at UFC 187 after Jones was arrested for fleeing the scene after hitting a 25-year-old pregnant woman and breaking her arm. “Rumble” has since won three straight bouts by dominating knockout, yet UFC President Dana White recently teased a potential fight between him and Jones.

After he was removed from the main event of UFC 200 and temporarily suspended by USADA for testing positive for estrogen blocker clomiphene and aromatase inhibitor Letrozole metabolites, Jones has recently teased he’d be back sooner than later, and rumors have suggested he only got flagged because he was on Cialis. Even if he does get off and is able to fight, however, Cormier doesn’t want to be scheduled to fight Jones.

He told Brian Stann on SiriusXM (via MMA Fighting) that he can’t believe Jones is still the interim champ, and is adamant any Jones vs. Johnson bout should not be for the interim title because he is healthy:

“Now one thing I completely disagree with, completely – and I don’t care who hears it – why in the hell would Jon still be the interim champion? That makes no sense. That makes absolutely no sense. They should not be fighting for an interim championship. That makes no sense at all. I don’t even know why he would still be the interim champion. His ass was disqualified. Take that freakin’ belt off of him. That’s stupid.

“I hope to God Dana misspoke, because that makes absolutely no sense. They aren’t fighting for some interim title if they fight. They can fight in the main event because it’s a big fight but it’s a fun fight. If they fight, they fight to determine the number one contender it’s not some interim championship fight. That makes no sense at all…You’d have an interim champion defending the interim championship while the actual champion is actually still there. That makes no sense whatsoever.”

Hard to argue against the common sense of that statement, but the UFC has already seen one interim title bout take place this year while Conor McGregor was engrossed in his feud with Nate Diaz. Cormier admitted he needed at least 10-12 weeks to prepare for his next fight, so that put any hope for a true light heavyweight title bout in 2016 on hold.

Jones would still most likely be suspended for the rest of the year even if he does get off with the tainted supplement defense, as fighters like Yoel Romero and Tim Means both received six-month sits for the same.

“DC” and “Rumble” have both agreed that Jones should have to work his way back up, but there will always be those who argue Jones never lost the belt and should therefore always have a clear shot at it until he loses. Which side are you on?

It’s been a rollercoaster of a month for UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier.

At the beginning of July, he was finally set to rematch arch rival Jon Jones in the main event of UFC 200 for a chance to finally unify the 205-pound titles and silence his critics once and for all. But just days out from the event, “DC” was hit with the heavy news that “Bones” wouldn’t competing at the supposedly monumental event after a potential USADA violation for two banned substances forced the UFC to pull him from the bout.

Cormier fought and beat late replacement Anderson Silva on the much-ballyhooed main card, using his clear area of strength of wrestling to control “The Spider” in an uneventful and, in the eyes of many fans in Las Vegas, disappointing bout. So the champ just couldn’t win – even if he won – and it turned out to be a sort of microcosm of his year in general.

Forever linked to “Bones,” who beat him by unanimous decision at 2015’s UFC 182, Cormier was and is viewed as a fake champion despite wins over top contenders Anthony “Rumble” Johnson and Alexander Gustafsson while the formerly dominant Jones was dealing with his seemingly never-ending legal troubles.

He may never be fully redeemed in the minds of some fans if he never beats Jones, but at this point, he’s just had enough of his rival’s card-wrecking antics. Speaking candidly during his return as a co-host on UFC Tonight last night, Cormier unveiled the stance that he was not going to face Jones, but rather the winner of UFC 202’s pivotal bout between “Rumble” and Glover Teixeira next:

“The sad thing is that you got guys that are doing everything right. Anthony Johnson and Glover Teixeira are doing everything right. So, I am sitting here right now telling you on UFC Tonight, I am going to fight the winner of that fight. I don’t care if Jon Jones comes back, I am not going to reward him. His chance was July 9, and he was not there. Glover Teixeira and Anthony Johnson are very deserving guys, and they should get the title shot after they fight. They’re doing the things the right way.”

It’s a proclamation that won’t be lauded by most, but at the same time, it’s one that is understandable at the same time. Jones and his downward spiral of arrests and drug test failures are putting a serious damper on his overall legacy and career in the long run, but in the short term, they are simply demolishing the high-profile cards he’s booked on.

The UFC was quick to kick featherweight champion Conor McGregor out of the main event slot for missing a press conference, yet while “The Notorious” may have needed to be put in place somewhat, putting the onus of UFC 200 – the so-called “biggest card ever” – on Jones’ (along with Brock Lesnar’s, who also failed two drug tests himself) dubious shoulders was a questionable call at best.

Like it or not, Cormier isn’t going to reward that behavior any longer. Jones may arguably be the best pound-for-pound talent MMA has ever seen.

He also may be the biggest waste of talent the sport has ever built up.

There might be a time when “DC” finally settles his long-held rivalry with Jones; there might not. It just won’t be in Cormier’s next trip to the Octagon.

The title unification bout between Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones has been a long time in the making. Ever since their first duel at UFC 182 there’s been the feeling that a rematch was always just around the corner. Even when ‘Bones’ was suspended and stripped of the title, we all knew that the second fight was imminent. Now that July 9 date is within touching distance, as we stand on the cusp of UFC 200 fight week, and the rivalry between ‘DC’ and Jones has ramped up once again.

There’s been plenty said in the war of words between the two long standing rivals, but perhaps the biggest question about the fight itself is regarding growth. How much has Cormier evolved, and on the opposite side of that coin how much has Jones potentially regressed? At UFC 197 we saw an extremely rusty former champion put in a rather dull performance, albeit one sided, against Ovince St-Preux. ‘DC’ recently claimed ‘this is the new Jon Jones,’ if true this could mean a very different rematch at UFC 200.

An interesting stat about Jon Jones; he has the same number of first round finishes at 205 pounds as former middleweight champion Anderson Silva. Cormier has made use of Jones’ recent decision streak, saying ‘Bones’ lacks power and ability to stop fights. Talking during a recent podcast, as quoted by MMAFighting.com, the current interim champion Jones offered his response to Cormier’s criticism:

“The funny thing about him saying that is, Daniel Cormier doesn’t punch hard. I think the only person I can recall him knocking out is ‘Bigfoot’ Silva. I’m not trying to offend ‘Bigfoot’ Silva but, I mean, he’s not known to have the strongest chin in the game. So, you name anybody else who he knocked out with one punch and walked away, I don’t think I’ve seen it.”

Jones recounts his UFC 182 decision win over Cormier, pointing out that at no time did the wrestler inflict any damage:

“In my fight with Daniel Cormier, he always talks about how I was working his body and I kicked him in the ribs and I kneed him in the ribs, and these body shots that really sent a shockwave going through his body,” Jones said. “But at no point in the fight did one of his punches do anything to me, or kicks. At no point in the fight did he get me to bleed. At no point in the fight did he get me to lose my breath or to look up at the clock out of frustration. At no point did he wobble me with a punch. I mean, Daniel Cormier caught me with like 60 uppercuts in that fight, and I’m exaggerating. Not one of those uppercuts did anything to me.”

“Never made me stumble. None of his kicks made me back up or stop moving forward. So, he’s trying paint this picture of me not being a powerful guy, but I kicked his ass.”

I actually hurt him with strikes, where he did nothing to me. I’ve heard him in interviews say that he’s going to walk me down and take me down right away because obviously I don’t have the stopping power to stop him from walking forward. But the reality is, if I wanted to go out there and walk him down, take him down for the sixth time, he doesn’t have the stopping power to stop me.”

“We’ve brought in absolutely zero special training partners from anywhere,” Jones said. “I’ve been working with the same few guys my whole career. These guys, they’ll go southpaw for me if I need them to go southpaw, they’ll shoot on me if I need them to shoot on me more, they’ll throw uppercuts more if I need uppercuts, overhands if I need overhands. I mean, DC getting a 6-10 guy shows how big I am in his head, how deep I am in his head.

“That’s what he looks at me as, this freaking 6-10 monster.”

“The Spider” soon had successful surgery, and now he’s already eying a return at July 9’s historical UFC 200 event from the all-new T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Silva’s trainer Rogerio Camoes described the all-time great’s plan moving forward in an interview with Sherdog:

“Thank God everything went fine and Anderson is already planning his return. He told me, ‘Master, pack everything up. We’re going to UFC 200.’ The most important thing is that he kept his mind strong and didn’t lose his motivation. On the contrary, he’s really motivated to take part at that historical UFC 200 event.”

The legendary champion has endured some tough injuries since losing the belt to Chris Weidman in 2013, but it appears that the gall bladder issue is one that he’ll be able to bounce back from in a small amount of time.

That’s good news for “The Spider” and his fans, as there’s undoubtedly a bad taste still left in their mouths after his controversial decision loss to Michael Bisping in London this February, where Silva battered and brutalized “The Count” in rounds three and five while showing precious little offense in the other three frames.

A re-booking of his match-up with fellow flashy striker Hall would add even more fireworks to a UFC 200 card that already features three title fights in Daniel Cormier vs. Jon Jones, Jose Aldo vs. Frankie Edgar, and Miesha Tate vs. Amanda Nunes. In truth, any fight featuring Silva and his still-lethal striking arsenal at 41 years of age would certainly be another huge upgrade to a card that is already one of the most stacked in UFC history on paper.

And Silva is an icon of MMA, one that would be the perfect crowning jewel on a midsummer masterpiece the UFC has crafted despite all the backlash from the booking of and subsequent removal of the original Nate Diaz vs. Conor McGregor main event.
