Amid continuing rumors of an introduced super-lightweight weight class to the UFC at 165 pounds, former two-weight champion, Conor McGregor must feature in an inaugural divisional title fight, according to promotional Hall of Fame star and color-commentator, Daniel Cormier.

McGregor, a former undisputed lightweight and featherweight champion under the promotion’s banner, has been sidelined since he headlined UFC 264 back in July 2021, fracturing his left tibia and fibula in a first round doctor’s stoppage TKO loss to Dustin Poirier.

However, expected to make his long-anticipated return this summer – potentially as soon as UFC 302 at the end of June during International Fight Week, in the form of a middleweight divisional debut against The Ultimate Fighter 31 rival, Michael Chandler.

And recent speculation regarding Conor McGregor’s impending summer comeback have come in tow with rumors of the impending introduction of a much-fluttered super-lightweight weight class – with the limit coming in at 165 pounds.

With official confirmation from the organization regarding the introduction of a super-lightweight limit lacking, the above-mentioned, Cormier claims if the division is brought to the forefront, McGregor must feature in a hypothetical inaugural title fight.

“If you do [a] 165 [pound division], it has to be Conor [McGregor],” Daniel Cormier told Ben Askren during an interview on his YouTube channel. “You’re introducing a new weight class – it has to mean something. You can’t have two normal fighters introducing the weight. Look, it didn’t work at 145 [pounds] when they (the UFC) did it for the women. It ended up being two people, but if you recall, Germaine de Randamie fought Holly Holm for that championship in Brooklyn.”

While Cormier claims McGregor must feature in an inaugural title fight at the super-lightweight limit, his co-host, UFC alum, Askren claimed the Dubliner must not feature in any form of championship fight in the near or distant future – pointing to the fact he is winless in the last four years.

Daniel Cormier calls for Conor McGregor to fight Nate Diaz at UFC 300 that brings in the fans

Promotional color-commentator and Hall of Fame inductee, Daniel Cormier has suggested a long-overdue trilogy rubber match between former champion, Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz take headlining honors at UFC 300 in April – claiming the clash would do the most to bring in fans – particularly ‘general” fans.

Cormier, a former two-division Octagon champion, held gold in both the light heavyweight and heavyweight divisions, before retiring from combat sports back in 2021 – bowing out before his induction into the UFC’s Hall of Fame as part of the ‘Fighter Wing’.

And still without an official headliner for a monumental UFC 300 card in April, Cormier claimed that while the promotion may be scrambling for a main event-worthy fight, a trilogy bout between the returning duo of McGregor and Diaz would bring in a significant fan viewing.

“If (Conor) McGregor fights (Nate) Diaz, that is what I believe draws the general fan in as much as anything that they [the UFC] could do in the UFC right now,” Daniel Cormier said during an episode of DC & RC. “Just because of Nate Diaz and the intrigue, the way the first fight played out, the way the second fight played out. It is still two of the highest-grossing pay-per-views in UFC history.

“These two men, when you put them together make a lot of money it is far enough out there to be considered an attraction,” Cormier explained. “I also believe at this point in their careers, sure, Nate Diaz isn’t the guy he was before. … He’s not the same guy, but neither is Conor McGregor.”

First fighting at UFC 196 back in 2016 at the welterweight limit, Diaz handed McGregor his first Octagon defeat in the form of a second round rear-naked choke submission defeat. And in an immediate rematch in August of that annum, McGregor avenged the defeat in a close, majority decision win at the welterweight limit.

Former UFC champion Daniel Cormier responds to long-time rival Jon Jones in latest back-and-forth.

It seems that Jones and Cormier will never truly put their feud behind them despite no chance of them ever fighting again. Since 2010 when the pair first met Jones and Cormier were at odds, the pair’s contrasting personalities clearly rubbed each other the wrong way.

Their rivalry began to get very personal and includes two fights in the Octagon, out-of-ring scuffles, personal attacks and threats.

The pair last faced-off back in 2015 and at times it seems that they have put things behind them as much as one can. However, every so often the pair engage in a back-and-forth that shows that those feelings have not really slipped.

After Daniel Cormier referred to Jon Jones as ‘a bad employee’, ‘Bones’ took to X and labelled ‘DC’ as bitter.

“Never let a “bad employee” beat you up and take everything from you twice. It’ll leave you bitter for a really long time evidently” – Jon Jones.

Daniel Cormier responds to Jon Jones

Responding via his YouTube channel, Cormier discussed Jones’ comments and clarified his position in a respectful manner.

“If I could say 100 things about him positively, he holds on to the negative things. I wasn’t talking about him directly,” Cormier said. “All I was saying is that when you have employees and businesses, sometimes things go sideways with employees…even if he won both fights. In that moment, it doesn’t change what I would say…it doesn’t change what happened with the fight with Dan Henderson, it doesn’t change what happened with Jones and UFC 200, and it doesn’t change the reason why Dana [White] went off…”

“I also said a ton of nice things about you. I also said that the UFC couldn’t afford to get rid of him because he’s too valuable…he’s always going to be safe because he’s so important…I’m not bitter, guys, I’m fine with everything…sure, he won the fights, because I don’t think he’s the only person in my life who I’ve fought who was on steroids.” (H/T BJPenn.com)

Jon Jones urged to end rivalry with Tom Aspinall fight he just has to say yes or no UFC

Chael Sonnen recently spoke wisdom about the Jon Jones and Tom Aspinall situation and devised a cunning game plan to end the controversial saga.

Everybody knows who Jon Jones is. For seemingly eons, he’s been the pinnacle of the world’s toughest sport. He is the crème de la crème of MMA, and that has not came without controversy.

Dana White once said the most brilliant thing about Jon Jones that anybody has probably ever said: that the man could’ve been the Lebron James of MMA. It’s true. From a hit and run on a pregnant woman, to failing PED tests, and more. Jon Jones has been a controversial figure in the game for a very long time. Not Lebron James-like at all (who has never been in any scandals and has always been a great role model).

Now, at the end of his career, there’s more controversy for Jones. Tom Aspinall defeated the terrifying knockout artist Sergei Pavlovich to capture an interim heavyweight title, and Aspinall beat him at his own game. In Aspinall’s own words, he has had his Michael Bisping moment. He knocked out the fearsome Russian and captured the throne.

Yet, he didn’t really capture the throne. Since Jon Jones is the undisputed heavyweight champion, Aspinall captured more of an imitation throne. Like a less meaningful replica almost. Now, Aspinall’s legacy will be forever marred. The electric British man wants action with Jon Jones, but Jones doesn’t want to play. Cue the controversy.

Chael Sonnen Explains how Jon Jones can settle the Tom Aspinall Controversy

Speaking on his podcast, You’re Welcome, Chael Sonnen spoke out about his former rival and the current controversy surrounding him.

“Jon does not enjoy that side of [MMA], he doesn’t understand it,” Sonnen said (H/T MMA Fighting) “He thinks the most money, the most accolades should go to whoever can beat up the most people. So Jon could end it. He could end something that he doesn’t want to keep continuing by saying one word, which is yes. But you want to know something?”

“Jon Jones could also end this by saying one word, which is no. ‘No, I’m planning to do one more. My plans have not changed for you. I plan to fight Stipe Miocic, who’s great. Stipe might be the one to bring me down. We’ll find out that night, but he might not. That’d be another notch and it will be enough. My plans don’t involve you.’ He could do that.”

“Daniel Cormier dismissed effectively Curtis Blaydes. I was there the night that he did it, he did it on the ESPN desk. He’d just got done fighting, Curtis had called him out and Daniel was a gentleman. He said, ‘Hey, that guy’s good. He’s got reach, his striking’s improved, a national champion wrestler, he’s younger, and he’s got a great career in front of him. But he and I will never share the octagon.’ And Daniel didn’t say it’s because it’s not a competitive fight. He didn’t say he was better than him. He didn’t even say he could beat him. He said, ‘I’m a champion, I get [pay-per-view] points. I fight people that have big names. You don’t.’”

“He leveled with him straight up,” Sonnen continued. “Never got into who’s better, whose legacy, who should remembered more. Daniel told the actual truth, which is, ‘I can’t make any money fighting you. You’re a dangerous fight that doesn’t bring money. Winning fights doesn’t get you to me, just so you know. I know they’ve told you that, but it’s not true. I know the magazines tell you that getting a high ranking brings you to me — I’m letting you know now, it doesn’t. Win over the crowd that’s willing to stop what they’re doing, part with their money and time to watch you, and that’s how you get to me. And you didn’t do that.’”

Sonnen Continues Spitting flame

“It was so effective, it was never discussed again,” Chael Sonnen continued. Curtis Blaydes versus Daniel Cormier, when Daniel was champion, was never discussed again. So Jon Jones could come out and say, ‘You’re young and you’re good and I’m not looking for that. No.’ Or he could say, ‘You suck. No,’ but it would still be definitive and he could end this. Or he could say, ‘Yes. Let’s stick with the plan. I have Stipe first and then I will come see you.’”

Sonnen firmly believes that Jon Jones is making this situation worse for himself by not just speaking out and being firm about his choice. Aspinall has been relentless in his pursuit of either Stipe Miocic or Jones and has been largely succeeding in turning fans against Jones (not that he needed much help for that).

“It’s kind of like, why does he not get himself a driver? Why would he not part [with] some money? If you’re giving a stripper $10,000 that you’re never going to see again, why would you not hire a writer for $10,000? He’ll work, he’ll be there the whole year. That’s about what it would cost for somebody to manage your Twitter page — about $10,000 for the whole year for a real top guy, a WWE guy, a guy who has worked in Hollywood. A real top professional writer, that’s about what it would cost. And you know Jon doesn’t have a driver, that’s how he’s got DUIs, and you know he doesn’t have a writer, that’s why he’s got typos.”

“What is it that we’re doing? What is it we’re trying to do?” Sonnen continued. “Jon could end this by saying yes or no. Jon has the power either way. His reasons don’t matter, at all.

“There’s a way to get some clarity, there’s a way to muddy these waters, and there’s a way to do what Daniel did and say, ‘You’re just not popular.’ Whatever the reason is, you’ve got to give a guy an answer, yes or no, or we just keep doing this. Generally, I would be OK [if this feud continued]. Like if this was Conor [McGregor] or somebody entertaining or fun, I would hope that it would continue. [But] you guys aren’t fun. This is boring.”

Do you think Chael Sonnen was on-point with his critique of how Jon Jones has been handling this situation?

Daniel Cormier claims Conor McGregor is playing Michael Chandler like pinocchio asks him to fight back

Former two-division champion, Daniel Cormier has urged lightweight contender, Michael Chandler to show some gile and pushback at Conor McGregor’s announcement of a middleweight fight at UFC 302 on June 29. next – claiming the Kill Cliff FC is far to easy to play with for the Dubliner.

McGregor, a former undisputed lightweight and featherweight champion under the banner of the promotion, has been sidelined since he headlined UFC 264 back in July 2021, fracturing his left tibia and fibula in an opening round doctor’s stoppage TKO loss to Dustin Poirier.

As for Chandler, the Missouri veteran’s most recent outing came in the form of a third round rear-naked choke loss to Poirier back in November of last year to boot.

However, yesterday, Crumlin counter striker, McGregor claimed he was set to fight Chandler during International Fight Week next year in late June, taking on the former at a middleweight limit debut for the duo – at an earmarked UFC 302 pay-per-view event.

Daniel Cormier urges Michael Chandler to fight back against Conor McGregor

And welcoming the possibility of a middleweight fight with McGregor in June, Chandler has been urged to fight back against the stipulation in place by the Dubliner, with Cormier claiming the former is being used as a puppet by the former two-weight champion.

“I think this is a game, I think Conor McGregor is the puppetmaster, and I think Michael Chandler is being far too easy to play with,” Daniel Cormier said on DC & RC. “At this point, Michael Chander is Pinocchio. Conor McGregor’s doing stuff like (pulling his strings) with Michael Chandler and I don’t like it, because I like Michael Chandler. But I think he’s doing too much.”
