Before Daniel Cormier’s debacle of a rematch with Jon Jones at July’s UFC 214, the controversy spotlight was squarely on “DC” himself when he weighed in prior to his second fight with“Rumble” Johnson at UFC 210.

Cormier held on to a towel as he weighed in a second time after he missed weight the first time. The light heavyweight champion was clearly using the towel, which was being held by his teammates, to redistribute his weight in order to make the 205-pound limit, and shockingly dropped 1.2 pounds in mere minutes to make weight for the title fight.

It was one of several such strange occurrences during the State of New York’s foray into MMA, which culminated in the New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC) being wholly blasted for appearing incompetent. Newly-appointed NYSAC executive director Kim Sumbler expressed her thoughts on the ‘Towelgate’ fiasco in an interview with MMA Fighting, and admitted critics had every right to criticize the commission.

“There were mistakes all around there. We learned from it. We changed our policy. We’re making sure that not only does the fighter not touch the towel, but that nobody else touches the towel except commission staff. As you noticed, it was not commission staff who held the towel at the Dan Cormier fight.”

“It was a trial by fire. We got thrown into the pit of snakes. We had the spotlight on us. We had every eyeball in this whole community on us. We were the last state to regulate [MMA]. Every eyeball was on us, waiting for us to slip up. Yeah, that was really hard to take. But again, I have to go back and say, they weren’t wrong. A lot of these criticisms — the people who criticized us — weren’t wrong. So there’s nothing wrong with speaking your mind.

“I’m willing to take the criticism. I’ve got some pretty heavy shoulders and I’m willing to take it. I’m willing to listen. I want people to realize this athletic commission now and this staff right now is really a good staff. We’re a staff that looks at what’s going on, we look at it realistically. We’re not an authoritative powerhouse. That’s not our philosophy any longer. We look at things realistically, we look at what the community wants and needs, we look at what’s right for the fighter and we make our decisions based on that — criticisms or not.”

The NYSAC ended up implementing a new rule six months after UFC 210, making it against the rules for anyone but commission personnel to hold towels while fighters weigh in.

New York has only recently allowed MMA into the Empire State and has had several hiccups since then. Announcing the wrong winner between Tyron Woodley and Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson at UFC 205, a bizarre end to Chris Weidman’s fight with Gegard Mousasi, in addition to the aforementioned ‘Towelgate.’

The spotlight on the NYSAC will shine once more this weekend, as the UFC returns to Madison Square Garden on Saturday for UFC 217. Let’s hope they’ve hammered out the kinks going into their second year of hosting MMA as the last state in America to do so.

UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier had no concrete plans about whom he intends to face next. This led to him taking it to the people and let fans decide via social media. In a recent tweet he sent out, Cormier noted that the verdict went to rising 205-pound star Volkan Oezdemir.

There is no date, nor a location that has been formally announced by the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) for this bout. It appears that the champion’s mind has been made up as to whom he will fight next, and Oezdemir appears to be up for the challenge.

Oezdemir attempted to troll the champion by using Luke Rockhold. However, in the end, it backfired. Keep in mind that Oezdemir trains out of Florida’s newly formed Combat Club Academy. This gym is where Rockhold has been training at in recent months.

Oezdemir stated that he has been gathering information from Rockhold about how to dethrone the champion during training sessions. Cormier quickly shut that down and indicated that the situation is actually the other way around.

“@lukerockhold we always knew he wasn’t very smart, but this seems to be working better than I could have ever imagined. They really have no clue, keep sending me the intel. Last nights report was amazing. Thanks Brother #weareaka #mybrother #day1 #insideman.”

Cormier is coming off a knockout loss to Jon Jones at UFC 214 in July that was later overturned to a no-contest due to Jones failing a drug test. Cormier has gone on record by stating that he will not fight for the remainder of the year.

However, he does plan on fighting Oezdemir in the first quarter of 2018.

Former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez is typically a calm, cool and collective individual. However, when it comes to former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones, he didn’t hold back his frustration once his name was brought up in a recent interview.

When he was asked about Jones knocking out his teammate, UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier, in the third round of their title fight back at UFC 214 while competing with the anabolic steroid Turinabol in his system, Velasquez let his voice known.

“DC” and Velasquez are training partners at American Kickboxing Academy (AKA). According to the former UFC champion, Jones’ actions were “f*cking bullsh*t.”

“It all comes down to people being dirty,” Velasquez told reporters in a media scrum in Seoul, South Korea (via MMA Today). “Like, our gym, me, Daniel, we don’t need extra substances to make us better. We do it by working hard. We’ve done this since we were kids. We learned how to train, and train right, and go out there and be competitive.

So, if you bring steroids or just some kind of performance-enhancing drug into it — if it’s not allowed, it’s not allowed. We want everybody to be on the same page, so for him to do that, for Jon Jones to do that, that’s bullsh*t. That’s f*cking bullsh*t. Why? Did you not want to lose to Daniel? Is that what it was? Why?”

If you recall, Jones ended up testing positive for the anabolic steroid Turinabol in an in-competition drug test administered on July 28th, which was just one day before UFC 214. This news came about just weeks after Jones seemingly re-righted his career with the win, which ended up being overturned into a no-contest as a result of the failed drug test.

This wasn’t Jones’ first time failing a drug test. The former UFC champion previously tested positive for two banned substances, clomiphene and letrozol, before his title fight with Cormier at UFC 200 last July.

This led to USADA found out that the banned substances were from a tainted sexual performance enhancement pill. Jones faces a four-year suspension from USADA for his failed UFC 214 drug test.

Despite that Jones’ team suggested that he ingested Turinabol unknowingly from a potentially tainted supplement, Velasquez is still far from okay with the way the situation played out at UFC 214.

“We want everybody on the same playing field,” Velasquez said. “When we go out there, we want it to be even as far as that goes, and having it come down to training, preparation, and being able to fight.

The guy that goes out there and shines on that day is the guy who’s going to win, and it’s generally from working hard and being prepared — and not from anything else.”
