UFC 228’s estimated PPV buyrate has been revealed, and it’s a bit of doom and gloom for the Las Vegas-based promotion.

UFC 228 Estimated PPV Buyrate

Dave Meltzer reported in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that the early numbers show may not have cleared even 150,000 buys. “The 9/8 PPV numbers were well below expectations with Woodley vs. Till on top. They are so bad that we haven’t gotten an estimate past an early number of 130,000 that was going around,” Meltzer wrote.

The Fights

Tyron Woodley vs. Darren Till in a welterweight title fight headlined this show, which saw Woodley successfully retain his title. Jéssica Andrade vs. Karolina Kowalkiewicz in a women’s strawweight bout served as the co-main event. Nicco Montaño vs. Valentina Shevchenko in a women’s flyweight title fight was supposed to be the co-main event but that fight got nixed after Montaño was hospitalized.

This wasn’t a stacked card by any means nor did it have some big name fighters featured. This event was projected to do decently after the surprise of the previous pay-per-view event, UFC 227, doing 300,000 buys the month before.

Although Woodley is known for his trash talk and one of the best welterweights in the world, he’s not a huge draw despite the fact that he creates headlines by the things he says and top fighters he calls out in interviews. Also, Till, who is still new to the UFC fan base as he’s only had a handful of fights under the promotion banner, had not headlined a PPV event before this fight.

History

Here is a list of the estimated numbers for the last three UFC pay-per-view events in 2018:

UFC 227: 300,000

UFC 226: 380,000

UFC 225: 250,000

The promotion returns to pay-per-view with its UFC 229 show on Saturday, October 6, 2018 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Conor McGregor for the UFC lightweight title will headline the show while Tony Ferguson vs. Anthony Pettis in a lightweight bout will co-headline. UFC President Dana White has previously stated that this event is trending for over 2 million buys.

Tyron Woodley’s Coach Has Theory Why He’s Not Fan Favorite

Tyron Woodley’s coach has given his take.

The post Tyron Woodley’s Coach Has Theory Why He’s Not Fan Favorite appeared first on LowKickMMA.com.

Tyron Woodley’s coach has a theory in regards to the reason that the UFC welterweight champion is not a fan favorite when he competes. It really started all when he won the title after beating Robbie Lawler by KO.

Woodley suffered a partial labrum tear early in his title defense over top contender Demian Maia, which he won by decision, which put him on the shelf. Woodley had been a fighting champion as he has defended it twice in 2017 where he picked up decisions over Stephen Thompson and Maia. This tied with three other fighters for the most active 2017 schedule by a UFC champion.

Then, for the majority of this year, Woodley would continuously state in interviews that he wanted big fights while telling fighters such as Rafael dos Anjos, Colby Covington, and Kamaru Usman to wait a little longer.

He would then return with a submission win over Darren Till in the headliner of UFC 228 to retain his welterweight title.

One of the coaches of the welterweight champion, Din Thomas, recently stated in an interview his theory on why Woodley is not over big with the UFC fanbase.

“I think that people are starting to realize,” Thomas said Monday on The MMA Hour. “Here’s what I think, I’m going to be honest with you, I think that people were just upset with Tyron. I don’t think that they ever didn’t think he could fight. I think they were just upset with him because they know what he’s capable of. I mean, up until the second Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson fight — Tyron was just tearing people up until that fight. Then those two fights, I think he just disappointed people and they were upset with him, and that’s when they started really badmouthing him. And the fact that he was coming out and just kinda complaining about his position in the game, I think that really just kinda exacerbated everybody’s view of him, and just, ‘You know what, we don’t like this guy.’

“But I think his performance on Saturday and his stance now that, ‘Listen, I don’t care who you put in front of me, I’m just going to fight,’ I think that’s what people want from Tyron and I think that’s what turned everybody’s opinion of him around.”

“It’s always affected him,” Thomas said. “There’s times where we had to take his phone away from him. It affects these guys. These fighters, everybody thinks they’re just these warriors and these animals, but fighters are some of the most sensitive people that you’ll ever see or ever meet, and it affects them. They get out there and they train their tails off and then get in the cage and they fight, they make themselves so vulnerable for the world to see, and then people just take that for granted and start talking trash about them, and it affects them. It affects them heavily.

“But I think now is a time where Tyron has matured, he has evolved as a person and a martial artist. He’s starting to become more mature and say, ‘You know what, this may be a time where I have to just give to the fans what they want, and that’s for me to just shut up and fight.’”

Woodley is expected to make his next title defense against Colby Covington at an event that has yet to be officially announced.

Colby Covington Mocks “Overrated Doughboy” Darren Till

Covington had some interesting comments about Till.

Colby Covington mocks Darren Till after his latest fight inside of the Octagon and in his own way, had some interesting words to share.

This comes off the fact that the title contender lost to Tyron Woodley in the main event of the UFC 228 pay-per-view event on Saturday, September 8, 2018 in Dallas, Texas at the American Airlines Center that saw the champ score a second-round submission victory to retain his welterweight title.

Covington was supposed to be the next in line for Woodley and the title but Covington underwent surgery to correct a nasal issue and turned down the fight.

Following the UFC 228 event, Covington called out Woodley for a fight with the welterweight title on the line. UFC President Dana White has even gone on record by stating that this is the fight that they plan to make.

This leads us to Covington making an appearance on The Luke Thomas Show on Monday where he gave his take on the UFC 228 headliner.

He wasn’t impressed with the fight or Till’s wins over Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone and Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson that got him the title shot.

“Till’s just an overrated doughboy that had a whole lot of hype,” Covington said. “He talked the talk, but he couldn’t walk the walk like me so he needs to leave it to the big boys. He beat a crippled old ‘Clownboy’ and got a gift in his hometown against the ‘Choirboy’. He should have never been rewarded with a title shot for missing weight in a third of his UFC fights. Good thing he neglected his family to land a hot zero significant strikes in two rounds.”

Moving along, Covington also gave his take on Celebrity MMA fan Snoop Dogg making interesting comments in a clip that was posted on his Instagram account while watching the fight. At one point, Dogg starts yelling, “F**k Donald Trump.”

“Snoop Dogg needs to get checked for Tourette’s,” Covington said. “Have you seen that malnourished twig hit the mitts? It’s a sight to be seen, it’s a joke. He needs to stick his a**hole-ness to rapping and get used to Donald Trump being his president for the next six-and-a-half years.”

Darren Till Addresses Potential Weight Class Change After UFC 228 Loss

Till gave his take on his future at welterweight following this loss.

Darren Till addresses his future at fighting as a welterweight after suffering his first loss in his pro-MMA career and if he will make a weight class change as a result of it.

As seen in the main event of the UFC 228 pay-per-view event on Saturday, September 8, 2018 in Dallas, Texas at the American Airlines Center, Tyron Woodley was able to score a second round submission victory over Till to retain his welterweight title.

Till earned this title shot with the last win of his pro-MMA career in the main event of UFC Liverpool event that took place at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, England when Till picked up a unanimous decision win over Stephen Thompson. Before that, he beat Donald Cerrone.

With his history of having issues with cutting down to 170 pounds, there was some talk of this being his last fight at fighting at welterweight. However, it appears that this loss only motivates him more to make the weight cut.

“It’s down to (my coach) Colin (Heron), no matter what I say,” he said to MMAJunkie. “I’ll listen to him 100 percent. It just pisses me off that someone was better than me tonight. I was too relaxed,” he said. “I was too confident. I’m always confident – everyone knows that. But I was too, like, the job had already been done in my head.

“I wasn’t really warming up. I was just ready to go in there and fight. Maybe looking back, I should have been more aggressive backstage. … I don’t have the same ritual for every fight, and this time it cost me everything.”

“I am still going to be the greatest,” he said. “I know that. All the greats have lost, and that’s my first loss tonight. I’m still OK, but I’m just upset.” Later, Till added: “He’s not a better fighter than me, but tonight he was better. And it kills me inside, it does.”

Till appeared to make weight with ease for this fight so it’s likely that he has figured out what to do to make weight with no issues.

Darren Till’s Interesting Comments About Pursuit Of UFC Title

Fight fans aren’t happy with what he had to say.

The post Darren Till’s Interesting Comments About Pursuit Of UFC Title appeared first on LowKickMMA.com.

Fight fans got behind rising prospect Darren Till in 2018 following some big wins that have pushed him towards a fight with UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley in the main event of the upcoming UFC 228 pay-per-view event.

Till is coming off the biggest win thus far in his pro-MMA career in the main event of UFC Liverpool event back in May that aired live on FOX Sports 1 at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, England once the rising prospect picked up a unanimous decision win over former title contender Stephen Thompson.

In a recent interview, Till went to great lengths to explain his desire and the distance he’s willing to go in order to become a UFC champion as he stated that he was never interested in living a lavish lifestyle but rather everything including having a child and a pregnant girlfriend will have to take a backseat in order for him to be focused on being the best, which has not led to a great reaction from fans as a result.

“I’m not in this to make money, be a champion, leave,” Till told reporters backstage on Saturday at UFC 227 (transcript via MMAjunkie). “I’m in this for people to say at the end of it, ‘You were the greatest.’ That’s my only mentality. F—k money, f—k everything else.”

“Everything else” apparently includes his pregnant girlfriend and his daughter in Brazil whom he has not seen in a while. You can’t have worries outside of this game,” Till said. “I’ve got a girlfriend who’s nearly seven months pregnant. I don’t really care. I’ve got a daughter in Brazil right now who I haven’t seen for one year. I don’t really care. I just care about legacy and greatness. That’s what I’m in this for.”

The UFC 228 pay-per-view event is set to take place on Saturday, September 8, 2018 in Dallas, Texas at the American Airlines Center with the main card airing on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET while the preliminary card will air on FOX Sports 1 at 8 p.m. ET and the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass.

Darren Till Rips Critics Of UFC 228 Title Shot

Darren Till has fired back.

The post Darren Till Rips Critics Of UFC 228 Title Shot appeared first on LowKickMMA.com.

Darren Till is tired of hearing critics and negative fans talk about his latest UFC opportunity that will see him jump in the rankings in order to get a title shot against UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley later this year.

It’s well known that interim UFC welterweight champion Colby Covington was supposed to get the title shot but those plans were axed and UFC President Dana White and other UFC officials thought that it was a better idea to have Till be the next title contender due to the fact that they needed a main event for the upcoming UFC 228 pay-per-view event.

Now, Till has expressed his frustration with the backlash from how the opportunity came about and he is not holding back.

“(UFC President) gave it to me,” Till said in a recent interview with (via MMAJunkie). “What do you want me to do? Just say no? Go, ‘Dana, it’s fine, I don’t want that title shot. Give it to someone else if they deserve it.’

“If Dana’s offering the title shot, I’m not going to say no, mate. This is what we do. MMA is good, and MMA fans are so amazing. But also, they can be toxic at the same time. Not just MMA fans – the fighters and people in general. When the UFC comes to me and offers me a shot,” Till said, “what the (expletive) do you want me to do?”

Till would go on record by stating that the chance of this title fight was given to him during a meeting with the UFC President while in Las Vegas because at the time, the promotion was seeking a main event for this upcoming event which was when Covington had turned down a title fight with Woodley because of a minor injury.

“Colby talks so much (expletive), and then when he was called to fight, he said, ‘I’m going to wait,’” Till said. “I don’t think it works like that. You can’t have your cake and eat it.”

“He has won the title,” Till added later. “He does deserve that shot, but the UFC, they’re not going to let him call the shots. It’s not for me to say. I’m just going off what the UFC and Dana want me to do. If they want me to fight for the title, I’m not going to say no, I’m upset.”

“I know a lot of people are going to say, (expletive) Colby, because of who he is and what he does,” Till said. “But at the end of the day, he earned his right. So as soon as I strip Tyron of his title, Colby and Usman, they’re the two first people who are getting a shot at it.”
