South Africa’s ‘Stillknocks’ Dricus Du Plessis will be facing off against Darren Till at UFC 282 in a top-ranked UFC middleweight showdown.

Previously, the English-born Till was a welterweight fighter but struggled to make weight with regularity. In 2019, the English fighter moved up to middleweight permanently. Since then, he has defeated Kelvin Gastelum but lost to Robert Whittaker and Derek Brunson.

Till’s upcoming opponent Dricus Du Plessis said that while he is a skilled fighter, he never made the move properly to middleweight. In an exclusive interview with Mike Owens of LowKickMMA, Du Plessis explained:

“I think Darren Till is as good as we thought, I honestly do believe that. I think Darren Till took the weight change- he can fight at middleweight, I see him being able to. But I believe he took the whole move up to middleweight as almost a little breather.”

Stillknocks‘ explained that when Till moved up to middleweight it afforded him some slack in training. The South African fighter continued:

“I don’t have to cut the weight anymore and now I can eat a little bit like I can eat more junk, party a little bit longer let my foot off the gas a little when it comes to the diet and conditioning and the burning of calories. I can miss a session because I’m not really feeling like it because I don’t have to worry about that big weight cut.’ And that’s a big problem I think a lot of people make once they step up a weight division.

Dricus Du Plessis says Darren Till lost focus

Darren Till put together a UFC record of 5-2 at welterweight but 1-2 at middleweight. Dricus Du Plessis believes it’s not a skill issue with Till at middleweight but instead an issue of focus. Speaking to Low Kick MMA, he continued:

“He needed to spend that time to become a real middleweight and not being a welterweight fighting at middleweight. Because that’s what I believe we saw when Daren Till moved up to middleweight. He didn’t look like a bigger Darren Till. He just looked like the same Darren Till that didn’t look as trained on the scale. So I think that’s where he lost a little bit of focus because the weight wasn’t motivating him.”

Dricus Du Plessis and Darren Till will battle in the UFC middleweight division at UFC 282 on December 11.

Daniel Cormier believes Darren Till’s bout at UFC 282 is a must-win fight: “It might be over.”

Daniel Cormier, Darren Till

UFC Hall of Famer and Olympian Daniel Cormier has warned Darren Till that his back is against the wall at UFC 282. On December 11, the English-born fighter Till will face off against South Africa’s Dricus Du Plessis.

Cormier has tremendous respect for the skills of Darren Till and believes it is time to show these off. While speaking on his ESPN show DC & RC, Cormier explained:

“Darren Till has that skill set. He’s training out of Sweden now with those guys like Khamzat [Chimaev] and the whole team at All-Star MMA. He has to implement what they teach, and he has to do it in a way that reminds everyone who Darren Till is and was between 170 and 185 lbs.”

With a win against the top-ranked Du Plessis at UFC 282, Till can begin working towards a title shot at the middleweight championship. Cormier continued:

“He’s still young enough to make another run towards the championship. It all starts Saturday, if he can’t get past Du Plessis, it might be over for the being for Till. But it would skyrocket Dricus up the rankings into very important fights.”

Darren Till has gone 1-2 since moving to middleweight with losses against Derek Brunson and Robert Whittaker. Since these two losses, he has moved his camp and now trains with Khamzat Chimaev.

Darren Till’s name has power

England’s Till is in a must-win situation on December 11 otherwise it may spell the end of his MMA career. Daniel Cormier added that Darren Till has a very valuable and recognizable name in MMA. DC said:

“The one thing about Till is he’s very popular. People still recognize him, and honestly, before Leon Edwards was the champ Till was the most popular English fighter because he’s recognizable and a big personality. I can’t tell you the amount of times Till has come for me on Twitter.”

Daniel Cormier concluded by saying:

“[Till’s] a character, but the reality is that character only gets you so far. You’ve got to win fights.” [Transcript courtesy The Mirror]

Darren Till says that despite the animosity the two fighters had previously shared, Marvin Vettori is one of the nicest guys he’s ever met.

Once upon a time, the two warriors were scheduled to square off as part of the UFC on ABC 2 card in April 2021. ‘The Gorilla’ was forced to withdraw from the contest due to a broken collar bone, something Vettori was immediately skeptical of on social media.

“I’m getting more suspicious by the day of this thing. I expect him to put out the X-Ray of his collarbone or some stuff. I’m getting a little suspicious,” Vettori said in response to the news.

The two had exchanged some additional words through social media, but the fight was never rebooked and Vetorri opted to move on, calling Till ‘irrelevant’ and ‘delusional’ in the process. But as it turns out, the two fighters did end up meeting inside the cage. In a recent interview, Darren Till revealed that he bumped into Marvin Vettori while training at Tiger Muay Thai.

Darren Till on Training with Marvin Vettori

“I was wrestling in the cage at Tiger Muay Thai and I seen this big c*nt come in and I thought who the f*ck is that? And he’s turned round and it’s Marvin and I’ve thought, ‘Oh, sh*t it’s on,” he said in an interview with talkSPORT.

“We just shook hands and got some work in straight away. None of this pussyfooting around, like, ‘Oh, I might fight you soon, so we won’t train together.’ We just went at it with each other and the next day and the next day.

“I’m that guy, I beef with everyone and when I see them you know what type of beef it is. It’s just fight beef, don’t take it too personally,” Till added. “I thought Marvin actually would, but he was super cool. One of the nicest guys I’ve ever met. Maybe we’ll fight one day but I can’t say nothing but good things about him after meeting him.”

Darren Till has lost four of his last five inside the Octagon, three by way of stoppage. His last victory came against Kelvin Gastelum via a split decision in 2019. On Saturday night at UFC 282, ‘The Gorilla’ will attempt to get back into the win column against streaking South African Dricus Du Plessis.

Darren Till has compared Alex Pereira’s punching power to that of the late Anthony Johnson following his UFC 281 victory over Israel Adesanya.

Johnson was renowned for his devastating knockout power which saw him TKO/KO 17 opponents throughout the 23 wins he amassed over the course of his career.

In a similar manner to which Johnson could shut the lights out of his opponents, new middleweight champion, Alex Pereira, carries the same venom in his hands. 3 of his 4 victories have come via TKO or KO since signing with the promotion. Most notably Pereira’s devastating power saw him become the first person to finish Israel Adesanya inside an MMA octagon en route to his title success at UFC 281.

Taking note of the devastating power the new champion has is fellow middleweight contender, Darren Till. Speaking to Michael Bisping on an episode of the ‘Believe You Me’ podcast, Darren Till related the power of Pereira to that of the late, great, Anthony Johnson:

“I think Pereira is a big, strong, massive, slow middleweight,” Till said. “He’s slow, his strikes aren’t devastatingly fast, but my God, does that man carry power. I think I’m two times, three times faster than him — Adesanya as well — but he just needs to land.

“It’s like, rest in peace, I don’t even want to say his name because it’s a very sad [time], but Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson, I want to give my condolences, but I’m actually going to give the example of him because he is the best example of it: That man only had to touch a little finger on your head and you’d be knocked out. I think Pereira has that type of thing.”

Darren Till Begins Title Resurgence At UFC 282 Against Driscus Du Plessis

Liverpool’s own, Darren Till, will begin his own resurgence toward the middleweight title when he faces up-and-coming contender, Dricus Du Plessis at UFC 282.

A long way from the top as the former welterweight title challenger looks to improve upon his past form, Till knows the challenges he faces once he gets there. Despite Pereira having taken out of the most dominant champions the middleweight division has seen in recent times, ‘The Gorilla’ still believes the new champion would have a difficult task at hand if he were to take on either Khamzat Chimaev or his previous opponent, Robert Whittaker.

“He’s young in the sport, but I saw Khamzat call him out and I was like, ‘Khamzat would definitely take him down within 30 seconds,’ yeah, it’s a fight, but that’s not a fight Pereira is ready for,” Till said.

“And Whittaker doesn’t just wrestle, he uses his strikes in his wrestling. He did that to me in the fifth round. We went four rounds of just making each other twitch, and then in the fifth round he used strikes into a takedown to get me. At that time, I couldn’t be taken down. I think he’d still have some trouble with Pereira because Pereira is quite strong.” (Transcribed by MMAFighting)
