UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson has started to show signs of wear and tear on his body.

After an injury knocked him out of a planned title defense earlier this year, “Mighty Mouse” returned and scored a victory over Tim Elliott recently.

During that fight, though, he suffered a tear in his popliteus muscle. The injury will not require surgery, but will keep Johnson out for the first part of 2017.

“I’m going to let this heal and not rush back in there,” Johnson told MMAFighting.com. “Maybe April or May (for a return), but if my injury needs more time, I’ll let it heal.”

Johnson is one title defense away from tying Anderson Silva’s UFC record of 10. He is the only fighter to wear the 125-pound belt.

The anti-doping agency showed up to test “Mighty Mouse,” who gladly accepted and had a little fun with it all.

As did his wife, Destiny Johnson.

Johnson recently scored another title defense, besting recent Ultimate Fighter winner Tim Elliott. He remains the only person to hold the UFC flyweight title.

The TUF 24 Finale main card did an average of 1,032 million viewers. This is was down from the TUF 23 Finale that drew 1.086 million viewers and was headlined by Joanna Jedrzejczyk and Claudia Gadelha. The TUF 24 Finale main card aired from 10:00pm-1:22am ET. The prelims drew 887,000, which is up from the TUF 23 Finale prelims, which drew 642,000. The pre-fight show drew 479,000, and the post-fight show did 280,000.

The Ultimate Fighter: Tournament of Champions Finale (also known as The Ultimate Fighter 24 Finale) took place on Saturday, December 3, 2016, at Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada. The event was headlined by a UFC Flyweight Championship bout with current champion Demetrious Johnson facing the winner of the flyweight tournament from The Ultimate Fighter 24, which was Tim Elliott. A flyweight bout between season coaches and former title challengers Joseph Benavidez and Henry Cejudo served as the co-main event.

TUF 24 Finale Fighter Pay: Demetrious Johnson Leads with $350,000

With another Las Vegas UFC card out of the way, that means that the fighter pay was released quickly, and MMAFighting snapped it up. Here’s how everyone on the card stacked up income-wise (all winners’ pay is split 50/50 between show money and win bonus unless otherwise noted):

Prelims on UFC Fight Pass
Devin Clark: ($20,000) defeated Josh Stansbury ($12,000)
Anthony Smith ($30,000) defeated Elvis Mutapcic ($16,000)

Prelims on FOX Sports 1
Jamie Moyle ($10,000 + $10,000 = $20,000) defeated Kailin Curran ($20,000)
“Maestro” Dong Hyun Kim ($20,000) defeated Brendan O’Reilly ($12,000)
Rob Font ($33,000) defeated Matt Schnell ($10,000)
Ryan Hall ($34,000) defeated Gray Maynard ($51,000)

Main Card on Fox Sports 1
Brandon Moreno ($24,000) defeatedRyan Benoit ($15,000)
Sara McMann ($56,000) defeated Alexis Davis ($27,000)
Jared Cannonier ($24,000) defeated Ion Cutelaba ($12,000)
Jorge Masvidal ($120,000) defeated Jake Ellenberger ($78,000)
Joseph Benavidez ($140,000) defeated Henry Cejudo ($50,000)
Demetrious Johnson ($350,000 with no win bonus) defeated Tim Elliott ($100,000)

It looks like there are some changes in the UFC’s payout strategies. In the past, TUF winners generally went up very slowly from the UFC minimum at the time (which currently appears to be $10,000) with escalators in maybe the $2,000 to show range per fight. Ryan Hall, in his first fight since winning TUF 22 a year ago at a $10,000/$10,000 purse, saw his show and win money nearly double to $17,000 on each side. Meanwhile, Tim Elliott, presumably due to the nature of TUF 24, got a big jump to $100,000 to show. That’s four times as much as Carla Esparez and Rose Namajunas were contracted to earn in the strawweight tournament finals of TUF 20, which took place two years ago.

Mighty Mouse Already Has Plans For Tying Anderson Silva’s Record

Coming off of his ninth consecutive successful title defense last night (Saturday December 3, 2016) over Tim Elliott in the main event of The Ultimate Fighter 24 Finale (TUF 24 Finale), UFC flyweight champion Demetrious ‘Mighty Mouse’ Johnson is already making plans for his next possible record-setting title bout.

Johnson is just one title defense shy of former middleweight champion Anderson ‘The Spider’ Silva’s ten consecutive title defense record, and is eying a fight in Vegas to attempt to tie the former Brazilian champ’s landmark achievement. Speaking at the TUF 24 Finale post-fight press conference, courtesy of MMA Junkie, ‘DJ’ shows no desire to fight on the East Coast in his next Octagon bout due to the straining time difference:

“Vegas – always Vegas,” Johnson said. “Same time zone (as the West Coast), and stuff’s open. I’m about to get some food, and it’s 11:30 at night.

“I have no desire to fight on the East Coast. I don’t want to fight at 1 o’clock in the morning. I always love fighting in Vegas, and I’ll choose Vegas around any place in the world.”

During his title defense against Elliott, Johnson showed early signs of struggle in the first round but would rebound to soundly take the next four with ease. Elliott’s awkward style of fighting got the The Pearl crowd very amped up, but Johnson was able to maintain his composure and focus at the task at hand:

“I was like, ‘Here’s this bull(expletive),’” Johnson said. “It’s nothing against him, but in my mind, you can’t get caught up in that atmosphere where people are like ‘Yeah, Tim, you’re (expletive) slapping him in the back of the head.’ You’re not doing anything. You’re not crossing distance. You’re turning sideways.

“He’s trying to get me caught up, and at one point, I got away from what I do well, which is to keep my rhythm. But my coach was like, ‘It’s fine. He’s doing that stuff because he can’t cross the distance. He has to do that stuff to get you there.’”

At one point in the fight Johnson found himself in side control while neither him or Elliott were able to advance position, however, referee Herb Dean warned Johnson to improve his position or he’d stand them up, something that didn’t sit too well with the 125-pound champion:

“I was like, ‘Herb, I’m in (expletive) side control, bro,’” Johnson said. “This is not checkers – this is chess. Tim needs to get up. I’m on top, and he’s holding me down, and you’re telling me I need to move? I’m like, no, bro, that’s not how it works.”

‘Mighty Mouse’ has not expressed any interest in moving up to the bantamweight division once again after possibly breaking Silva’s title defense record, and instead figures to continue his dominance in the UFC’s flyweight division.
