Demetrious Johnson ranks himself as #2 in GOAT list claims nobody has done what I've done UFC

Ranked atop the list of many’s greatest fighters of all time, former undisputed UFC flyweight champion, Demetrious Johnson has left himself off the top spot in his own respective list – naming incumbent heavyweight best, Jon Jones as his greatest fighter to ever compete.

Johnson, a record-setting former UFC flyweight champion and the current ONE Championship flyweight gold holder, has been sidelined since he took home a trilogy rubber match win over Brazilian ace, Adriano Moraes with a unanimous decision win in their decider back in May.

Weighing up his immediate fighting future in the aftermath of his judging win, Kentucky native, Johnson, who turned in a record-setting 11 consecutive successful defenses of his undisputed flyweight title during his historic, gold-laden tenure with the UFC, departed the orgazniation in a swap-deal with Ben Askren back in late 2018.

Demetrious Johnson provides his GOAT list

Finding himself ranked atop lists of the greatest mixed martial arts fighters of all time ahead of the likes of Georges St-Pierre, Anderson Silva, Fedor Emelianenko, and even the above-mentioned, Jones – Johnson claims he should only rank number two in any sort of list, including his own.

“At number two, you have yours truly,” Demetrious Johnson said on his official YouTube channel. “Nobody has been able to do what I’ve been able to do in the flyweight division or in any division. 11 consecutive title defenses, created a brand-new move that none of you guys ever seen, the ‘Mighty Wizbar’ shout to Matt Hume helping me learn that move. I have wins by knockout, submission, gone to a decision, gone to a split draw, whatever you want to call it.”

“For my number one, I have Jon ‘Bones’ Jones,” Demetrious Johnson explained. “That is the only man I’ll put ahead of me because this man, I feel like any single time he has been inside the cage he could just destory his opponent however he wanted. He also has wins by knockout, putting people to sleep, decisions, everything on the list.”

Demetrious Johnson was on the edge of his seat during Saturday’s epic title fight between 125-pound queen Alexa Grasso and former champion Valentina Shevchenko.

The reigning ONE flyweight world champion was taking in the festivities at Noche UFC from the comfort of his own home and offered a look at his live reaction to some of the evening’s more exciting moments. However, Johnson’s kids weren’t overly fond of the excitement that their father was exuding. In a clip, which you can see below courtesy of ‘Mighty Mouse’ on social media, the pound-for-pound great very loudly reacts to Raul Rosas Jr.’s epic knockdown of Terrence Mitchell in the opening seconds of their main card clash.

Johnson quickly apologizes to his daughter who can be heard crying in the background after being startled, but ‘Mighty Mouse’ couldn’t help himself. He did it once again when Alexa Grasso dropped Valentina Shevchenko in the second round of their instant classic.

Demetrious Johnson Shares His Take on the Big Moments at Noche UFC

Demetrious Johnson offered up his full reaction to the critically acclaimed event on his YouTube channel, which you can watch via an embed at the bottom of this article.

Noche UFC offered fans a spectacular night of fights from beginning to end. Unfortunately, much of it was forgotten after Octagon announcer Bruce Buffer revealed to the crowd that the main event clash between Grasso and Shevchenko had been ruled a split draw, courtesy of an inexplicable 10-8 score turned in by judge Mike Bell. It was revealed that Bell had ‘Bullet’ up 3-1 going into the final round. Had he scored the fifth in favor of Grasso via 10-9, Shevchenko would be a two-time world champion. Instead, Bell scored it 10-8 for Grasso, resulting in a 47-47 scorecard.

With the other two judges split on the winner, the bout was ruled an anticlimactic split draw.

Shevchenko was quick to condemn the score and even went so far as to blame the Mexican Independence Day setting for swaying the judge’s decision. Fans were not thrilled by those comments, but ‘Bullet’ proceeded to double down on that statement during the post-fight press event and during her appearance on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani on Monday. Shevchenko also condemned Mike Bell’s 10-8 score, suggesting that it is a mistake he will have to live with for the rest of his life.

YouTube star and bodybuilder Bradley Martyn might like to constantly remind the world that he’s 260 pounds, but that didn’t help him much against 56-year-old stand-up comedian and Joe Rogan sidekick, Bryan Callen.

Martyn has earned the attention of the MMA community over the last several months after suggesting that he could handle himself against some of the sports’ biggest names, including Nate Diaz, Sean O’Malley, Alex Pereira, and Demetrious Johnson. Fight fans were admittedly curious to see how the hulking fitness guru would do considering his sizeable frame.

As it turns out, we may already have our answer courtesy of a clip that sees Martyn grappling with Bryan Callen, a comedian, and podcaster who you may remember from his roles in Old School, The Hangover, and The Goldbergs.

In the clip, which you can see embedded below, Bradley Martyn struggles to make much headway against the 155-pound comedian, which only serves to prove that when matched up with a world-class athlete like Demetrious Johnson, Martyn would undoubtedly get his a** handed to him on a platter.

P4P Great Demetrious Johnson Willing to Put Bradley Martyn’s Skills to the Test

Of all the fighters Bradley Martyn has called out in recent months, only reigning ONE flyweight world champion Demetrious Johnson has challenged the bodybuilder to put his money where his mouth is. ‘Mighty Mouse’ agreed to make a trip to California for a grappling match with Martyn once he takes care of a few prior obligations.

“It’s funny, you know,” Johnson said on Henry Cejudo’s YouTube channel. “He’s 265 pounds, he’s a bodybuilder, so obviously he has got the weight advantage. But at the end of the day, that’s the beautiful thing about grappling. It’s not about weight, it’s about technique, and we’re going to try to grapple.

“I told Brendan Schaub that I want to make it happen,” he continued. “I’m busy doing other things right now, but when I get back from all my vacation I’m going to fly down to Calabasas and we’re gonna roll, man. I’m gonna roll him up” (h/t MMA Mania).

Considering how Martyn did against Callen, we expected Demetrious Johnson to take care of business with ease should the two actually wind up on the mat together.

ONE flyweight world champion Demetrious Johnson took home gold following his appearance at the IBJJF Masters World Championships in Las Vegas.

Mighty Mouse’ is considered by many to be the greatest flyweight fighter in the history of the sport after capturing world titles in both the UFC and ONE Championship. Currently, Demetrious Johnson reigns as the ONE flyweight champion, but the pound-for-pound great is taking some time away from the cage to test his skills on the mat. This week, Johnson headed to the Las Vegas Convention Center for the biggest jiu-jitsu tournament in the world, the IBJJF Masters.

Johnson swapped out his four-ounce gloves for a gi, competing as a brown belt in the Master 2 division for competitors aged 35 and up.

Per a report from Bloody Elbow, Demetrious Johnson took home gold in his division, winning six matches, including a 10-0 shutout in the tournament finals. Not too shabby for a guy who hasn’t competed in a submission grappling tournament for nearly two decades.

With his run at Worlds now in the books, ‘Mighty Mouse’ will inevitably take a long hard look at what comes next in the world of mixed martial arts. Should he choose to keep things going, Johnson will likely defend his ONE flyweight world title against Kairat Akhmetov inside the ONE Championship Circle. But with nothing left to prove, Johnson could understandably walk away from the sport with his name already etched in the MMA history books.

Pound-for-pound great Demetrious Johnson offered an update on his proposed scrap with fitness guru Bradley Martyn.

In recent months, the popular podcaster and bodybuilder has made a name for himself in the mixed martial arts community by suggesting that he could handle himself in a street fight with some of the sports’ biggest stars, including Nate Diaz, Alex Pereira, Sean O’Malley, and ONE flyweight world champion, Demetrious Johnson.

While most fighters were quick to disregard Martyn’s comments, ‘Mighty Mouse’ was more than willing to call his bluff, suggesting the pair could settle things in a grappling match.

Since then, things have quieted down a bit, but during a recent interview with The Schmo, Demetrious Johnson provided fans with an update on their potential clash.

“I don’t know. Last time I heard he’s trying to fight Aljo and Merab so I have no idea what’s going on with that,” Johnson said. “I think Bradley Martin, one of his schtick in the podcast world is, ‘Hey, do you think I could beat you in a street fight? Yes or now, blah, blah, blah.’ I think he had an offer to fight Mac Perry for some good money so I have no idea.”

Currently, Demetrious Johnson is competing at the World Master IBJJF Jiu-Jitsu Championships in Las Vegas. Once that is out of the way, he has a few more obligations to take care of but is more than willing to carve out time for Bradley Martyn if the muscle-bound trash-talker is willing to put his money where his mouth is.

“I was gonna go there after my vacation. My wife was like, ‘Babe, really? Are we really going to entertain this? You have jiu-jitsu worlds coming up. Let’s get that done.’ Then I have to cover for my professor. I have to go open a gym. Help Bibiano Fernandes open his gym in Canada,” Johnson continued. “Then after that, we have free time to go out there and do it. So I have prior obligations. More important obligations to attend to instead of just drop out of a plane and go grapple some gentleman that doesn’t even know if he wants to grapple.”

Demetrious Johnson Commends Aljamain Sterling and Merab Dvalishvili for Refusing to Fight Each Other

Switching gears, Demetrious Johnson offered his take on the traffic jam atop the UFC bantamweight division. With Sean O’Malley now holding the gold, there is a world of options for ‘Sugar’ when it comes to his first title defense slated for December.

But in an interesting turn of events, the top-two ranked contenders, Aljamain Sterling and Merab Dvalishvili, are best friends and as a result, refuse to fight one another. That did not sit well with UFC President Dana White who suggested that if Dvalishvili isn’t willing to fight his friend, maybe he should compete elsewhere.

Demetrious Johnson, on the other hand, commended both fighters for putting their friendship above money and titles.

“I’m happy about that,” Johnson admitted. “I think that friendships and bonds are a lot bigger than winning a world championship. After I spent time, maybe 30 minutes, talking to Aljamain Sterling, I could tell in his soul that friendship means more to him. Because money comes and goes. World championship, that stuff comes and goes and Aljamain Sterling had his opportunity to be a world champion. He’s got four consecutive title defenses I believe.

“Merab hasn’t had that opportunity and for Aljo to give Merab the opportunity to fight for the belt while Aljo sits back and chills, I think that’s great. There are people out there who might think that’s the wrong mindset, but for me, I applaud Aljo for doing that.”

As for who O’Malley should defend his title against first, Demetrious Johnson sees the easy marketability of a rematch between ‘Sugar’ and the only man to beat him inside the Octagon, Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera, but suggested that the shot should go to the man with the biggest win streak.

“I think ‘Sugar’ Sean O’Malley is in the perfect position to have options,” Johnson said. “I think at the end of the day, it brings fresh air into the division because, yes, he does have a loss to ‘Chito’ Vera so that’s an easy matchup, an easy storyline that they can do. Merab, he’s on a [nine] fight win streak. I think for me, I give more priority to people who are on a win streak. So I think [Merab] deserves the shot over Corey [Sandhagen] and everybody else.”

If you want to be a world champion, Demetrious Johnson believes there’s no easier place to do it than in the world of mixed martial arts.

The reigning ONE flyweight world champion is currently taking some time away from the sport to reflect on his future after nearly 20 years of dominance. During the course of his career, Demetrious Johnson has captured both the UFC and ONE flyweight titles while defeating some of the biggest names in the sport. As a result, ‘Mighty Mouse’ is considered by many to be one of, if not the greatest pound-for-pound fighters in the history of the sport.

But that didn’t stop Johnson from kinda-sorta discrediting his own work by suggesting that it was easier to win a world title in MMA than in other sports, specifically boxing.

“That’s the thing about boxing,” Johnson said on TikTok. “Mixed Martial Arts is the easiest sport to become champion in. When you fight boxing, it’s boxing. Every person you fight in boxing is going to be good in boxing… when you fight mixed martial arts, you’re gonna have people who have significant big holes in them, right? You have a guy like Alex Pereira…6-1 and he becomes a champion in mixed martial arts. You can have no wrestling experience and become a world champion. You look at Brock Lesnar, he became a world champion and he had no stand-up experience whatsoever.

“That’s why I feel MMA is the easiest to become a world champion…you can have deficiencies and still become a champion. In boxing, you can’t, you have to be a good boxer to become a world champion, you just have to” (h/t MMA News).

Demetrious Johnson Has Dominated the Competition in Multiple Organizations

Amassing a record of 25-4 since making his pro MMA debut in 2009, Demetrious Johnson quickly rose to prominence by becoming the first-ever UFC flyweight world champion three years later. He successfully defended the title an astonishing 11 times before finally being bested by Henry Cejudo via a split decision in their UFC 227 rematch.

Following the loss, Demetrious Johnson was part of a first-of-its-kind trade that saw ‘Mighty Mouse’ move over to Asia-based promotion ONE Championship in exchange for former ONE and Bellator welterweight champion Ben Askren. Since making his move to ONE, Johnson has curated a 6-1 record and came out on top in a trilogy with ex-titleholder Adriano Moraes. Johnson also made history, competing in the promotion’s first hybrid-rules fight with Muay Thai icon Rodtang Jitmuangnon. DJ defeated ‘The Iron Man’ via a second-round rear-naked choke.
