The Thanksgiving holiday led right into a big weekend for the UFC, what with their many announcements and all.

Conor McGregor is no longer the UFC Featherweight Champion, even though McGregor himself is reportedly saying he didn’t relinquish it voluntarily. UFC issued a statement weighing in on the matter. Jose Aldo is the new UFC Featherweight Chaampion again, even though Anthony Pettis and Max Holloway are already fighting for an “Interim” title in what is now the new UFC 206 main event for the 12/10 PPV in Toronto. The original main event fell through on Friday when Daniel Cormier had to pull out of his originally scheduled rematch against Anthony “Rumble” Johnson, who reportedly turned down an offer to fight replacement opponent Gegard Mousasi in the new main event that UFC initially tried setting up.

Oh yeah, and the UFC made their return to Australia on Saturday evening with a show that featured another surprise retirement announcement, as well as a first-round KO in the main event.

UFC Fight Night 101 took place live from the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Australia last night, airing on FS1 with a main card that included Robert Whittaker finishing Derek Brunson via first-round knock out and longtime UFC fighter and former TUF Nations coach Kyle Noke retiring after a loss.

UFC Melbourne (also called UFC Fight Night 101) emanated from the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Australia tonight (Saturday, November 26, 2016). The night’s main event pit rising middleweight sluggers Robert Whittaker and Derek Brunson against one another.

The two 185-pounders delivered the best fight of the night in a back-and-forth barnburner. The headliners each picked up $50,000 Fight of the Night bonuses for their one round war that saw Whittaker emerge victorious by first-round knockout.

The New Zealander had to withstand multiple power-punching barrages from Brunson, but he eventually made the former All-American wrestler pay for his overly aggressive approach. Whittaker landed a hard counter left hook that permanently turned the tide of the fight and put Brunson on wobbly legs. Soon after, a head kick and follow-up punches put the finishing touches on the biggest victory of Whittaker’s career. The knockout garnered ‘The Reaper’ another $50,000 check, this for Performance of the Night. The streaking middleweight is only 25 years old.

The final bonus of the evening went to the debuting Tyson Pedro. The Sydney, Australia, native survived a hellacious straight left knockdown from Khalil Rountree to author his own first-round comeback. As Rountree charged in for the finish, he overcommitted and soon found himself engaged in a grappling battle with the Aussie. Pedro flipped the script by completing a takedown and taking the TUF alum’s back, and he completed the turnaround by cinching a rear-naked choke just over four minutes into the first round. For his dramatic come-from-behind win, Pedro nabbed an extra $50,000.

In the main event of the UFC’s Fight Night 101 from Melbourne, Australia last night (Saturday November 26, 2017), the Australian crowd really got their money’s worth in the show’s featured bout.

The main event of the evening featured native Australian Robert Whittaker who took on the surging knockout artist Derek Brunson, in a clash of two of the best 185-pound prospects that the UFC has to offer.

The first round started off with a bang as Brunson swarmed the Australian with his usual high-powered offense, dazing Whittaker a number of times as he staggered across the Octagon in attempt to distance himself and regroup from the nasty blows.

Whittaker was able to regain his wits and land a massive counter punch that put Brunson out on his feet, and the Australian was able to finish his opponent on the ground with strikes before the referee waved it off and the Rod Laver Arena erupted.

UFC Fight Night 101 (also known as UFC Melbourne) went down tonight (Saturday, November 26, 2016) from the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Australia. The Fight Night card was headlined by a middleweight showcase between top ten 185-pounders Robert Whittaker and Derek Brunson.

Whittaker and Brunson engaged in a one-round slugfest of epic proportions. ‘The Reaper’ was able to survive Brunson’s assaults near the fence despite eating some hard shots. To Brunson’s credit, he too was able to withstand some hard counters from Whittaker as he charged forward. But in the end a head kick and follow-up punches put Brunson down for good. The dramatic first-round victory ran Whittaker’s winning streak to six straight. He figures to face a top-five opponent his next time out.

In the co-main event, Andrew Holbrook snagged the upset victory over hometown prospect Jake Matthews by unanimous decision. Holbrook leaned on his offensive grappling throughout the fight. He landed a few takedowns of his own, but he did his best work from the bottom when taken down by Matthews. He threatened with multiple leg lock and kimura attempts while also doing some work with kicks on the feet.
