Diego Ferreira scored an absolutely brutal one-hitter quitter against Michael Johnson at UFC Vegas 73 on Saturday night.

Ferreira was desperate to get back into the win column after coming up short in his last three contests. With his back against the wall, ‘CFD’ delivered in the second round of his main card opener, landing a vicious looping right hook that caught Johnson on the button, instantly separating his soul from his body. Ferrerira followed his opponent to the canvas, landing another blow for good measure, but it was quite unnecessary and Ferreira apologized profusely for doing so once the referee stepped in and called for the stoppage.

With the victory, Diego Ferreira improved to 9-5 inside the Octagon and 18-5 overall while Michael Johnson dropped to 13-15 under the UFC banner, 21-19 overall. ‘The Menace’ has now alternated wins and losses in his last four appearances.

Mateusz Gamrot

Former two-weight KSW champion, Mateusz Gamrot has scored his third UFC victory and third finish to boot, forcing a second round verbal submission from the #12 ranked lightweight, Diego Ferreira, after landing a seemingly debilitating knee during a grappling scramble.

The Poznan native attempted to utilise his notable wrestling and offensive grappling ability against Fortis MMA staple, Ferreira throughout the two round affair, and appeared to land an ultimately fight altering knee to the body during a second round grappling scamble.

Taking Ferreira’s back at the Octagon fence, Gamrot shot forward with a knee to the side of Ferreira, which immediately drew a reaction from the Brazilian who signalled to referee, Jason Herzog that he was no longer able to continue.

Following the victory, Gamrot, who added Ferreira to a winning run which includes a pair of stoppage wins over both Scott Holtzman, and the veteran, Jeremy Stephens, called for a showdown with one-time undisputed lightweight title challenger, Michael Chandler next year.

Below, catch the highlights from Mateusz Gamrot’s stoppage win over Diego Ferreira.

UFC lightweight veteran Diego Ferreira has revealed that he recently signed a new five-fight deal with MMA’s premier promotion.

Ferreira, the current #12 contender in the 155-pound weight class, is set to be in action for the third time this year next weekend at UFC Vegas 45. On the final UFC card of 2021, the Brazilian will face rising prospect Mateusz Gamrot, who’s jumped onto the scene with victories over Scott Holtzman and Jeremy Stephens, the latter of which came via a brutal kimura submission in July.

Ahead of the main card clash, MMA News’ James Lynch spoke with Ferreira about a variety of topics, including his upcoming opponent, the recent shoulder injury that saw him withdraw from a scheduled bout against Grant Dawson, and his latest training camp.

During the interaction, Ferreira updated MMA News on his current contractual situation in the UFC. The 36-year-old revealed he recently put pen to paper on a new deal that will see him compete in the Octagon at least a further five times.

“I think I have five more. (I) just signed (for) five more. Yeah, just re-signed my contract, I think I have five more if I’m not wrong. I just talked to coach Sayif (Saud) to see, but I already re-signed again, five more fights… (it feels) super. It feels, I gotta say, it feels like they really watch out for me, and now I just need to go over there and impress… To get there is easy, to stay in there, to stay between the sharks and the lions, it’s tough. I really enjoyed to get re-signed and have another chance. I gotta put everything on the line.”

Ferreira Hopes To Snap Losing Skid On December 18

When he enters the Octagon with Gamrot next Saturday, Ferreira will be hoping to avoid an 0-3 record in 2021. In his first appearance of the year, the Brazilian faced surging contender Beneil Dariush for the second time. In a competitive affair, the Iranian-born American fell on the right side of a split decision. Dariush now sits at #3 in the division and is preparing for a likely title eliminator against Islam Makhachev.

Ferreira fell to consecutive losses for the first time since 2015 three months later when he was TKO’d by the returning Gregor Gillespie. Despite back-to-back setbacks, Ferreira entered the year on a six-fight win streak, which included a victory over former champion Anthony Pettis. He’ll be looking to re-find that form this weekend ahead of an important 2022.

Having only lost to Dariush, Gillespie, and Dustin Poirier in his 21-fight career, Ferreira remains one of the most battle-tested names in the lightweight rankings, and represents a challenge that won’t be easy for the likes of Gamrot, who are looking to forge their own path towards the top 10 with victories over the division’s stalwarts.

Talk about an emphatic return to the Octagon for Gregor Gillespie. Matching with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ace, Diego Ferreira on the main card fo UFC Vegas 26 in a catchweight contest, the wrestling maestro stopped the Brazilian with a rallying second round ground strikes effort.

Making his first Octagon walk since a stunning high-kick knockout loss to former interim lightweight title challenger, Kevin Lee back in December of 2019 at UFC 245 — Gillespie survived some early opening round adversity.

Struggling to get Fortis MMA trainee, Ferreira down on cue with his takedowns, Gillespie was swept on occasion when he eventually ended up on the mat, but most notably, staggered back to his corner between rounds after eating some heavy counter strikes.

With Ferreira severely fatigued within the opening couple of minutes of the second round, Gillespie started to find his own second wind, before forcing Ferreira to his stomach, eventually forcing referee, Chris Tognoni to stop the bout amid a slew of ground strikes.

Below, catch the highlights from Gillespie’s Fight of the Night display against Ferreira.
