Jon Jones had two choices for his next light heavyweight title defense. Those choices being between Dominick Reyes or Corey Anderson.

Anderson comes off a first-round TKO of Johnny Walker, while Reyes just knocked out former 185-pound king Chris Weidman in the first round of their UFC Boston headliner. Ultimately, Jones chose to fight Reyes next.

In the meantime, Anderson is content to wait and fight the winner, but he has also been called out by former title challenger and top-ranked 205-pounder Anthony Smith. Anderson has made it clear he has no interest in fighting Smith right now.

Speaking to the UFC Unfiltered podcast, Smith chimed in on the current situation at 205 pounds. In regards to Jones opting to fight Reyes over Anderson, Smith believes “Bones” simply picked the easier fight. (H/T MMA Junkie)

“I honestly think Jon probably chose the easier opponent between Corey Anderson and Dominick Reyes,” Smith said. “I think that Reyes is absolutely more dangerous, as far as explosiveness and size and his length.

“I think he may give Jon some problems on his feet a little bit and Jon will have to dodge some bullets. But look at everybody Jon’s beat – they’re one-dimensional, and that’s what Jon wants.”

Smith pointed to Reyes’ controversial decision win over Volkan Oezdemir to comment on what he believes are some holes in the heavy-handed prospect’s game.

“Like we’ve seen in the Volkan Oezdemir fight, Dominick Reyes isn’t necessarily dominant on the ground and his takedown defense isn’t that great,” Smith said.

“Even though he was able to stuff some of Weidman’s (takedowns) … he did have some improvements there, but Volkan Oezdemir took him down several times and Jon Jones is a much better wrestler than Volkan Oezdemir, that’s for sure.”

As for Anderson, Smith had nothing but praise for the veteran’s skillset, and deemed him a much more well-rounded fighter than Reyes.

“I think Corey is more well-rounded,” Smith said. “He’s got fundamental boxing. His kicking game isn’t super high level, but he keeps his hands in the right spot. He moves his head well. His wrestling is good.

“His takedown defense is really good. His top pressure is good. His cardio is phenomenal. Corey presents a lot more problems than Dominick Reyes does, so I do think that Jon picked the easier fight.”

Do you think Jones simply chose Reyes because he’s an easier matchup than Anderson?

UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones called out Dominick Reyes after a recent tweet.

Reyes defeated former middleweight champion Chris Weidman by first-round knockout last month and is seemingly next in line for a title shot. He proceeded to call out Jones afterwards and has made no secret of his intentions in defeating him.

And despite Corey Anderson’s win at UFC 244 last week, Jones recently decided that he wanted to defend his title against Reyes next. “The Devastator” responded to that on Saturday:

“A champion so great, he is now going to be fighting the first of the next generation! It’s such an honor and I can’t wait for my crack at the king in the octagon,” Reyes tweeted.

The sudden respect that Reyes was showing caught Jones off-guard as he responded to the tweet on Sunday:

“You started this whole thing talking about party favors and now you’re going to show this fake a** respect? Serious question Dominic, what exactly is so next generation about you or your fighting style? Youre a new name, that’s the only thing different about you,” Jones replied.

Jones proceeded to state that he would pick Reyes apart and later expose him:

Reyes had a response for Jones soon after:

What do you make of the Twitter beef?

Dominick Reyes wants as many eyeballs as possible on his eventual light heavyweight title clash with Jon Jones.

“Bones” recently confirmed that he has decided to fight Reyes next, putting up his 205-pound crown for grabs yet again. Speaking to MMA Fighting, Reyes complimented Jones’ ability to troll people online. He then called for “Bones” to put pen to paper and make the fight official.

“He’s really turned into quite the troll. That’s all I’ve got to say about that. He goes online just to get a rise out of people and then he does completely different from what he says.

“I think he’s doing it just to mess with people to be honest. I’m ready to go. We’ve just got to get that contract now, sign it up and champ camp begins,” Reyes said.

Lastly, Reyes suggested Conor McGregor slide into the co-main event of their title fight, making the event that much bigger. Reyes noted he’s eying a January 18 fight with Jones in Las Vegas.

That just so happens to be the same date and location McGregor has already stated he’s locked in for next year.

“I’d fight him Jan. 18 in Vegas. Put Conor McGregor on the co-main and that sells the fight,” Reyes said.

Do you think McGregor’s return to the UFC will be in a co-main event role?
