At this past weekend’s (July 29, 2017) UFC 214 from Anaheim, California, Donald Cerrone took on former welterweight champion Robbie Lawler in a fight that turned out to be an entertaining three round slug fest. Cerrone, however, came up short, suffering a decision loss.

The former lightweight title challenger had also reportedly suffered an eye injury during the fight, which could’ve potentially put him on the sidelines for the foreseeable future. It appears as if he has already gotten that issue taken care of, however, and Cerrone recently said that he’s ‘rallying’ for a fight at October’s UFC 216:

“I got my eye cleared up. I had a six-month (medical) suspension, so that’s another reason why I’m here,” Cerrone told MMAjunkie while in Las Vegas. “I went and took my eye – I got it cleared, and I’m good to go – 20/5 vision. You’d think I could see the punches coming.”

“I was just at the office rallying for Oct. 7 (UFC 216),” he added. “So we’ll see. I didn’t get knocked out this time, so I was like, ‘I’m OK.’

Given how active he is, it isn’t surprising to see Cerrone looking for a quick turnaround, but he also said that he’s expecting the UFC to book him for UFC 217, which will take place at Madison Square Garden in November:

“I think they’re going to hold me off and put me on Madison Square Garden (UFC 217, set for Nov. 4)” Cerrone said. “I have a silly hunch. But who cares? I like to fight. So bring that (expletive) on.”

In regards to his fight against the “Ruthless” one, many had wished it was five rounds in the aftermath of UFC 214, and Cerrone agrees:

“I wish we had two more rounds, man,” Cerrone said. “God, I had a good time. I really did. I knew that fight was going to be that exact thing: meeting in the middle and (expletive) just fighting. The judges – whatever. I don’t have any control over that. I can’t say ‘(Expletive) them,’” he added.

“I guess I should have fought harder, right? They always say, ‘Don’t leave it to the judges.’ So that’s that. Like I said, I wish I had two more rounds. But I legitimately have a sickness, and that was fun to me. Like fun, fun.”

Who would you like to see Cerrone fight next?

How would a UFC star fare in the boxing ring?

That’s the question everybody seems to be debating in the build-up to Conor McGregor’s blockbuster fight with Floyd Mayweather on August 26th, but it’s worth keeping in mind that ‘The Notorious’ is far from the first UFC fighter to have fought in the squared circle.

In all fairness, the circumstances surrounding McGregor Vs Mayweather are unique. We’ve never seen anything of this magnitude before – a UFC champion at the peak of their career head to the boxing ring, let alone agreeing to face one of that sport’s all-time greats.

Nevertheless, there are a number of fighters currently fighting in the UFC who do have professional boxing bouts on their records, often from much earlier in their career’s, and in this article, we’ll take a closer look at how they did – from the good and the bad through the downright ugly.

Anderson Silva

One of MMA’s all-time greats, Anderson Silva has also tested his skills in the boxing ring twice during his combat sports career.

His pro boxing debut took place in his native Brazil all the way back in 1998 when he was just 23 years old. At the time he was only just getting started in his MMA career too, with both of his wins at the time having come during a single-night tournament a year earlier.

Despite his lack of experience, Silva was handed a tough first outing against Osmar Luiz Teixeira, a cruiserweight (200 pounds) who held an 8-2 boxing record and had finished six of his fights inside the distance.

No video or photographs exist of the fight, but officially it was recorded as a victory for Teixeira due to Silva retiring after the second round, allegedly due to body shots.

After a two year absence, Silva returned to MMA, and by 2005 had amassed a 15-3 record, but after surpisingly being released by the PRIDE organization, he briefly opted to return to the boxing ring.

This time he faced Julio Cesar de Jesus, a newcomer who would prove to be no match for Silva’s by-now seasoned striking and was finished with punches to the body and head in the second round.

It wasn’t long before Silva signed for the UFC and he would go on to achieve superstardom as their long-reigning middleweight champion, but over the years he’s also harbored an ambition to fight legendary boxer Roy Jones Jr in the ring.

However, despite both indicating their interest in the match-up, this particular super fight has never come to fruition.

In one of the most anticipated fights of the year, former UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler met former lightweight title challenger Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone head-to-head in the middle of the Octagon.

Lawler hadn’t seen the inside of an Octagon since losing his then-170-pound title in the main event of UFC 201 to Tyron Woodley a year ago via first round knockout. The knockout artist is looking to get back on the winning track after having a five fight win streak snapped.

Cerrone also recently had a winning streak scrapped when he was knocked out by Jorge Masvidal late this past January. Prior to his loss, “Cowboy” racked up four straight finishes over the likes of Alex Oliveira, Patrick Cote, Rick Story, and Matt Brown. With a potential win over a former dominant champion such as “Ruthless” he could jump right into the 170-pound title picture.

Right out the gate Lawler brought the fight to “Cowboy,” who ate some big shots from the former welterweight champ, but paid him back for it with some zingers of his own. After a great back-and-forth match, the judges felt that it was “Ruthless” who did enough to earn the decision win.

UFC 214 gave us all a fight we previously only dreamed about: Robbie Lawler vs. Donald Cerrone. Two high-output strikers who love nothing more than to bite down and fight.

It was everything fight fans could have wanted from the two.

Lawler picked up the unanimous-decision victory by taking the first and third rounds. Cerrone tried to answer, but it wasn’t enough.

Ruthless came right out and started to put it on Cerrone. Lawler crowded him and started landing heavy haymakers in tight, but Cerrone stood tough to weather the first storm that came his way. Cerrone’s eye wore the markings of the first exchange.

Lawler continued to crowd Cerrone against the fence. The southpaw took his time to pick out which shots he wanted to throw: uppercuts, knees and elbows. Cerrone landed a couple solid knees from inside the clinch, but he was on the receiving end of most of the action. It was a firestorm of an opening for the fight.

Cerrone took Lawler down to the mat to change the tone of the fight. Cowboy passed to side control with just over a minute left in the opening round. Lawler got back to his feet, but Cerrone finally began landing his offense. Lawler would take the first, but his opponent settled in at the tail end of the round.

Cowboy looked much more composed at the start of the second round. Lawler allowed him to fight at range. The diversity of Cerrone’s attacks kept Ruthless guessing throughout the second, and Lawler paced himself through the round without expending a lot of energy. The round would be Cerrone’s and set up a decisive and tension-filled third round.

Lawler touched Cerrone with a high kick to open the third, and he began to up his tempo after it landed. Cerrone’s defense was improved from the first and put a stop to the pressure for a moment. Cowboy kept looking for opportunities to take Lawler down, but he defended the weak attempts.

The former welterweight champion attacked Cerrone’s body with kicks and forced him to become defensive as he marched forward. The pressure of Lawler proved to be the difference in the third round. Cerrone would try to stop it with takedown attempts but was unable to complete any shot. Lawler’s forward pressure and punches would win the round and the fight.

The win has put Lawler back in the title picture, but the performance itself didn’t inspire confidence. With Georges St-Pierre waiting in the wings, Lawler will likely have to take one more fight before getting a crack at getting his belt back.

Cerrone loses no ground. He performed admirably and competed against the elite of the division. He will still be an exciting matchup for anyone at lightweight or welterweight. He’s a fighter fans will want to see regardless of what’s on the line.

Lawler vs. Cerrone was supposed to be a stand-up war, and that is exactly what they gave us. No one should be complaining after that fight.
