Conor McGregor hasn’t won a professional fight since 2016.

The Irishman defeated Eddie Alvarez to win the lightweight title and become the first-ever UFC double champion. After that, McGregor suffered a TKO loss to Floyd Mayweather in his professional boxing debut, before returning to the UFC where he was submitted by Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Now, McGregor will fight for the first time since October of 2018, when he headlines UFC 246 on pay-per-view (PPV) from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on January 18. He’ll meet Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone in a welterweight main event. UFC president Dana White recently joined Stephen A. Smith on “The Stephen A. Smith Show” to preview the bout.

White claimed that this fight is crucial for McGregor’s UFC career, and he must pick up a victory. (H/T BJPenn.com)

“He has been training hard, he has been getting ready for this moment,” White said. “The problem is, Stephen A. you’ve seen this, not just in fighting but in other sports, when a guy has 100 and something million dollars, he’s young, he’s famous and now he is unbelievably rich, it is hard to keep the train on the tracks for some guys. That has definitely been Conor McGregor.

“I think he is at a point now where he realizes he needs to get his act together. This win over ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone if he can pull it off is crucial in his career right now and his future. So, he is taking it very serious, he wants to stay active. That is why this fight is at 170 and hopefully we will get three good fights from him this year.”

Should McGregor emerge victorious, and Nurmagomedov successfully defends his title against Tony Ferguson in April, White has hinted that a rematch between the Irishman and Russian is what’s next for the UFC.

What do you think about White claiming a win over Cerrone is crucial for McGregor’s career? Do you agree?

“On the opponent and time we’re waiting until further notice and that further notice is January 18th, Conor fights Cowboy, Conor takes care of business, that’s a fight that we’re interested in, obviously.”

Masvidal comes off a tremendous 2019 in which he won all three of his fights in devastating fashion. The first being a second-round knockout win over Darren Till in England. Then, Masvidal pulled off the fastest knockout in UFC history by knocking out Ben Askren in five seconds with a flying knee.

Lastly, “Gamebred” captured the BMF Championship by taking out Nate Diaz at UFC 244 from Madison Square Garden in November. Now, Masvidal is looking to make the biggest paychecks possible moving forward, and there’s no bigger paycheck that can present itself than the one that he’d get fighting McGregor.

What do you think about Masvidal saying he might be interested in fighting McGregor?

If you want to watch the Conor McGregor vs. Donald Cerrone UFC 246 pay-per-view (PPV), be ready to fork over some extra cash.

ESPN has announced that it will be raising its UFC PPV prices in 2020. Current prices of $59.99 will jump up to $64.99 starting with UFC 246: McGregor vs. Cerrone. UFC 246 takes place from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on January 18, 2020. Initially, PPV prices were lowered back down to $59.99 after the UFC inked an exclusive deal with ESPN as their broadcast partner for PPV events.

Speaking in a statement to Variety, ESPN representatives had this to say on their decision to raise prices back up.

“This price change represents a return to the price that UFC fans traditionally paid, prior to ESPN+ decreasing the PPV price for most of 2019.”

As for new ESPN+ subscribers, they will get a discounted rate when paying for UFC 246, along with a one-year subscription to the service at $84.98. An ESPN+ subscription remains the same price at $4.99 per month or $49.99 per year.

Conor McGregor is set to make his return to the Octagon next month. The Irishman headlines the UFC 246 pay-per-view (PPV) event from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on January 18, 2020, against Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone.

Speaking to MMA Fighting’s “Eurobash” podcast recently, McGregor’s striking coach, Owen Roddy, was asked about McGregor’s 2020 plans. It was suggested earlier this year that McGregor has three fights planned for 2020. His fight with Cerrone, a fight with the winner of the BMF Title fight between Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz, which Masvidal won, and then a rematch with lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov.

However, UFC president Dana White has recently come out and said that, if McGregor beats Cerrone, and Nurmagomedov beats Tony Ferguson in April, a rematch between McGregor and Nurmagomedov could possibly happen. Roddy notes that, as far as he knows, McGregor’s plan to fight the BMF Champ remains the same.

“That’s the plan,” Roddy said. “That’s what he wants to do and there’s one thing I always say: when Conor says he wants to do something, if anyone is going to do it, he can. But, let’s not look past Cerrone. He’s a tricky opponent and he’s a veteran with tricks up his sleeve. But Conor going in there the way he looks now, he should do well.”

McGregor will be fighting at welterweight, a division in which his record sits at 1-1 after his two bouts with Nate Diaz. However, Roddy says McGregor has been at this weight for quite some time now, and his body has become accustomed to operating at it.

Looking at the second fight with Nate Diaz fight, that’s what you’re going to see,” Roddy said. “It’s that Conor. He’s been at this weight for awhile. He’s used to training at this weight; grappling and sparring, running and doing the miles. His body knows how to move that weight around now and he knows how to move it around quickly.

“There’s no killing himself to make weight and there’s no limit calories in the last three weeks of camp trying to get down to weight…that’s gone. Now, he’s just focusing on his training, doing what he’s doing, looking at his opponent and breaking him down and dismantling him in the fight.”

What do you think about a potential fight between Masvidal and McGregor next?

Despite admitting UFC veteran Cerrone is a ‘very talented’ fighter, he believes McGregor will be able to exploit a weakness in his opponents’ game and get an emphatic victory on Jan 18. (H/T MMA Fighting’s Eurobash Podcast)

“I like the Cerrone fight, but he’s very talented. It’s only
when you start looking at all of his fights and the tools that he has — he’s
got weapons, he’s got lots of weapons and he’s good everywhere, he’ll mix it
up. Yeah, he’s a very talented fighter, but like everyone he has holes in his
game. Roddy told MMA Fighting.

“He has struggled a little bit with southpaws and there’s no
better southpaw in the world than Conor. I think we can land shots on him and
that’s what I’m most excited about.”

“Once things start to build the fight will be big , the fight has only been officially announced a couple of weeks ago, so it’s building nicely. When it starts getting into the New Year, three or four weeks out it’s just going to explode. Cerrone and Conor, the match up is perfect. Their mentalities, their attitudes…their attitudes towards fighting…I think it’s going to build for an exciting fight and exciting build-up to a fight.”

“They’ll be back and forth, Conor will be throwing some stick, but Cerrone will be able to take it and he’ll be able to throw it back as well. There is mutual respect there, I don’t think it will…the back and forth… get too dirty or anything like that. It’ll be light-hearted and that will be nice, and it will be enjoyable for everybody. When they get in and do it, it’s going to be a very exciting fight.” (Transcribed by Peter Carroll at MMA Fighting)
