The exodus from the dormant Sengoku Raiden Championship continued on Friday as Eiji Mitsuoka was announced as the latest fighter to sign with rival promotion DREAM. In his promotional debut on July 16 at Ariake Coliseum, Mitsuoka will face fellow DREAM newcomer, BJJ and judo black belt Bruno Carvalho.

The Mitsuoka vs. Carvalho bout wasn’t the only news from DREAM on Friday as the promotion announced a name change for their next event. The July 16 DREAM event was initially titled DREAM.17, but it is now officially called: “Fight for Japan: DREAM Japan GP Final – 2011 Bantamweight Japan Tournament Final”. Really rolls of the tongue doesn’t it? The “Fight for Japan” series, which began back on May 29, is a down-scaled event to conserve electricity and raise money for March 11 tsunami and earthquake victims.

Also on the card, Gegard Mousasi will defend his DREAM light heavyweight championship against judoka Hiroshi Izumi, Hiroyuki Takaya will put his newly acquired DREAM featherweight belt on the line against “Little Hercules” Kazuyuki Miyata and the bantamweight Japan tournament will reach its conclusion.

MMA Knockout of the Day: Alistair Overeem Sends Todd Duffee to Bed Early

Todd Duffee met Alistair Overeem at Dynamite!! 2010 for the Dream interim heavyweight championship. Let’s give you some context—for those of you who don’t follow the sport heavily—about Duffee.

Duffee is a former UFC heavyweight and holds the UFC record for quickest knockout inside the Octagon with a seven-second knockout of Tim Hague at UFC 102.

Now Duffee was cut from the UFC following a third-round knockout loss at UFC 114 to Mike Russow and was cut due to attitude problems. So all of this makes the knockout better in my opinion.

The bout between Overeem and Duffee begins with Duffee coming out and quickly throwing a right punch and getting tangled up with Overeem. That short burst was the best of Duffee’s performance, as after that Overeem took over the bout with devastating knees and punches.

Looking at Overeem you know those punches and knees definitely don’t feel like a nice massage somewhere on one of the islands of Hawaii.

The beginning of the end happens when Duffee ends up along the ropes with Overeem pressing and firing on all cylinders. One left knee, a right punch and a left punch, then Duffee drops like a ton of bricks onto the ground.

With that knockout win, Overeem earned the Dream heavyweight title and is now his second heavyweight belt in MMA. (He also holds the Strikeforce heavyweight belt.) Overeem is set to face Fabricio Werdum this weekend in the first round of the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix.

Duffee has yet to fight since this bout on New Year’s Eve but is set to face Nick Gaston at Dream 17 on July 16th.

Two More Bouts Booked For DREAM.17, Duffee vs. Gaston & Osawa vs. Fujiwara

DREAM Japan GP Final

Another two bouts have been added to next months DREAM.17 event in Japan. It was revealed on Wednesday that former UFC heavyweight Todd Duffee (6-2) would make his return to the promotion to face King of the Cage product Nick ‘Afrozilla’ Gaston (5-0). While a third place bout for the Japan Bantamweight Grand Prix tournament would take place between Keisuke Fujiwara (11-3-4) and Kenji Osawa (17-10-2).

DREAM.17 is scheduled to take place on July 16, and is the second offering for 2011 by the Japanese based promotion. The event will take place at the Ariake Coliseum in Tokyo, Japan and currently there are no plans to broadcast the event in North America. Likely DREAM and HDNet will come to some agreement, so fans should expect the event to air via tape delay.

Duffee, owner of the fastest knockout on record for the Ultimate Fighting Championship, debuted with DREAM on New Years Eve. Duffee squared off with K-1 and Strikeforce champ, Alistair Overeem, at the Dynamite!! 2010 event for the DREAM heavyweight title. Overeem made short work of the former UFC fighter by ending the fight in just nineteen seconds of the first round.

Gaston is a perfect 6-0 so far in his pro career having fought exclusively for the KOTC promotion. ‘Afrozilla’ has fought once this year already, earning a first round TKO victory at a KOTC: Underground 66 event last April.

Fighting for third place, and a spot on the upcoming World Bantamweight Grand Prix tournament this fall, are Fujiwara and Osawa. Fujiawara steps in as a replacement for Atsushi Yamamoto who was forced out due to a possible retinal detachment following his loss to finalist Hideo Tokoro last month.

Fujiwara lost a decision to finalist Masakazu Imanari at the “Fight for Japan” event last month in the opening round of the Japan GP tournament. Previous to that loss, the ZST champion was undefeated in five fights going 4-0-1.

Osawa was also eliminated by Imanri in the tournament, losing in the semifinal-round of the tournament. That loss ended a two fight win streak, including his tournament opener over Takafumi Otsuka. Previous to his return to Japan Osawa also went 1-2-1 in the WEC from 2008 to 2009.

The current DREAM.17 card appears as follows:

Light Heavyweight Championship bout: (c) Gegard Mousasi vs. Hiroshi Izumi
Featherweight Championship bout: (c) Hiroyuki Takaya vs. Kazuyuki Miyata
Bantamweight Tournament Final: Masakazu Imanari vs. Hideo Tokoro
Bantamweight Tournament 3rd place bout: Keisuke Fujiwara vs. Kenji Osawa
Lightweight bout: Tatsuya Kawajiri vs. Willamy Freire
Heavyweight bout: Todd Duffee vs. Nick Gaston

Todd Duffee, owner of the fastest knockout in UFC history, will get another chance to prove himself in Japan as it was revealed on Wednesday that the heavyweight power-puncher has agreed to square off with the undefeated “Bully Beatdown” veteran Nick “Afrozilla” Gaston at DREAM.17 on July 16 at Ariake Coliseum.

Duffee’s promotional debut at Dynamite on New Year’s Eve 2010 was catastrophic. In his first fight since being cut from the UFC due to attitude problems, Duffee took a fight on extremely short notice and against the advice of his manager with one of the most dangerous men in the heavyweight division: 2010 K-1 World GP champion and Strikeforce ace Alistair Overeem.

As many predicted, Duffee proved to be no match for the much more experienced Overeem and the American fell in only 19 seconds.

Also announced for DREAM’s first numbered event of the year, Atsushi Yamamoto, who TKO’ed newcomer Yusaku Nakamura in his May 29 Bantamweight GP quarterfinal bout before falling to Hideo Tokoro in the semifinals, has been forced out of his third-place GP bout with Kenji Osawa due to a detached retina. ZST bantamweight champion Keisuke Fujiwara, who dropped a decision to GP finalist Masakazu Imanari in the quarterfinals, will instead face Osawa for third place honors.
