Dustin Poirier has hinted that his upcoming lightweight title fight against Charles Oliveira could well be the last of his career.

‘The Diamond’ has picked up back-to-back wins over Conor McGregor in 2021 to solidify himself as the top contender at 155lbs.

Oliveira won the title recently vacated by Khabib Nurmagomedov when he knocked out Michael Chandler inside two rounds at UFC 262.

A fight between Poirier and ‘Do Bronx’ now seems inevitable.

In an interview with Sportsmail, Poirier gave props to his next opponent who he considers “dangerous” in all facets of MMA.

Oliveira is a very dangerous guy, I think he’s improving more and more in his striking, putting guys down, he’s long especially for that weight class and I think he’s probably the best jiu-jitsu practitioner in the UFC roster right now,” Poirier said.

“He’s aggressive and very offensive with his jiu-jitsu. He doesn’t just use it to protect himself or get out of bad positions, he attacks people with it and finishes fights with it so he’s a very dangerous opponent who has paid his dues and fought a long time in the UFC.

Poirier is yet to hold an undisputed UFC title. The Lafayette, Louisiana native beat Max Holloway in 2019 to become the interim lightweight champion before he fell short in his bid to unify the division against Nurmagomedov later that year.

The 32-year-old says becoming an undisputed world champion is his ultimate goal and once he’s achieved that there’s nothing left for him to accomplish in the sport.

“For me, being undisputed world champion was the goal from the beginning, if I can tick that box, I’ve done it all in the sport of mixed martial arts,” Poirier said.

Poirier says he might just call it a career and throw himself into his hot sauce business.

“We’ll see man,” Poirier said when asked about his future beyond a fight with Charles Oliveira. “I’ll probably just go and sell hot sauce!”

Do you think Dustin Poirier is seriously considering retirement ahead of his lightweight title fight against Charles Oliveira?

Michael Chandler Uses Charles Oliveira Fight As To How Poirier vs. McGregor 3 Could Have Gone Different

Michael Chandler doesn’t agree that Dustin Poirier would have gone on to win in the second round if Conor McGregor didn’t break his tibia.

McGregor suffered a first-round TKO loss due to a doctor’s stoppage as a result of the injury that occurred towards the end of the first round of their trilogy match at UFC 264 last month.

McGregor, along with many of his fans, believe the fight would have played out differently if he made it to the second round unscathed. Others, however, believe Poirier was getting the best of McGregor in the first round regardless and given how their rematch went, it was only a matter of time until Poirier would get the win.

While Poirier would likely have won given how the fight was playing out, anything can happen in mixed martial arts and Chandler knows that more than anyone.

Chandler looked to be on his way to winning the lightweight title after hurting Oliveira in the first round of their championship fight at UFC 262 in May.

However, Oliveira survived and managed to get the TKO win in the second round. For that reason, Chandler isn’t ruling out the possibility that McGregor may have turned things around in the second round without a broken tibia.

“It’s a hard one, because a lot of people say Dustin was just going to run through him. I don’t know if Dustin necessarily runs through him,” Chandler said (via Middle Easy). “Chad Mendes ran through Conor, and then Chad Mendes lost that fight. Conor is better than we think he is a lot of times, at dealing with the early onslaught, the early adversity, the early takedown, and the early wrestling and grappling. I think Poirier wins that fight, I think Poirier would have won that fight, but I don’t think you can necessarily say ‘Hey because the first round he would have smashed him…’

“Imagine if Charles Oliveira would have broke his hand, broke his elbow, broke his leg, broke his foot, at the end of that first round (against me)… We could have easily said ‘Oh well Chandler was about to run through him. Chandler would have done what he did in the first round, for two, three, four, and five. He would’ve ran through him, would’ve knocked him out.’ And what happened? I got caught in the second round, Charles Oliveira is your lightweight champion.”

Do you agree with Chandler?
