Charles Oliveira

In the UFC 256 co-main event former interim champion Tony Ferguson takes on the streaking Brazilian Charles Oliveira.

Round 1: Both men start the fight with some low leg kicks. Charles Oliveira lands the best of them. The Brazilian backs up Tony Ferguson who fights well off the fence. ‘Do Bronx’ is getting aggressive early. He presses Ferguson again and manages to complete a takedown. Oliveira is in half guard but it’s something of a stalemate right now. The Brazilian postures up, lands and elbow before advancing to mount. Ferguson is just trying to hang on and avoid taking any damage in this precarious position. Oliveira postures up for a few seconds to land some punches before Ferguson ties him up again. Oliveira gets off some more damage before grabbing the arm bar. He’s got it hyper-extended, Ferguson should tap but he doesn’t – round one ends.

Round 2: Ferguson leaps in with a big hook at the start of round two. It seems like his arm may be seriously hurt. Oliveira secures another takedown and it working for position as he eats a nasty, illegal up kick. We have a brief break in the action before getting back underway. Oliveira has a nasty cut on his eye right now. Ferguson is scrambling for his life but Oliveira is not letting him up. Oliveira has Ferguson stacked up against the fence, he lands a nice knee to the body. ‘El Cucuy’ is in a strange position as he tries to get back up but it’s leaving him wide open to Oliveira’s ground attacks. Ferguson is working for a submission from the bottom but it never really looked likely – round two ends with Oliveira on top.

Round 3: Two kicks and a straight right at the start of the final round from Ferguson. Oliveira is landing some nice low kicks. The Brazilian capitalizes on a scramble to pick up his opponent and slam him to the mat. He’s in side control, continuing his dominance we’ve seen in the previous two rounds. Oliveira jumps into mount. Ferguson tries to explode out and Oliveira switches for the triangle choke – it looks super tight. He eventually lets it go and maintains top control. Ferguson is trying but is finding it impossible to get anything going from the bottom. Ferguson managed to sneak out and get top position for half a second before Oliveira slams him back down to the mat. Oliveira rides out the final round on top – what a performance.

OFFICIAL RESULT: Charles Oliveira def. Tony Ferguson via unanimous decision

LowKick MMA will be bringing you UFC 256: Figueiredo vs. Moreno Results throughout the night (Sat. 12th. December 2020) from the UFC Apex facility in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Just twenty-one days removed from their respective escapades at UFC 255 in November, undisputed flyweight titleholder, Deiveson ‘Deus Da Garra’ Figueriedo and challenger, Brandon ‘The Assassin Baby’ Moreno lock horns in tonight’s UFC 256 headliner.

Brazilian punisher, Figueiredo managed the first successful defence of his 125-pound title at UFC 255 against Alex Perez in a reworked main event, with the latter replacing an injured former bantamweight champion, Cody ‘No Love’ Garbrandt. Scoring his third submission win in four, the Para native latched onto Perez’s neck with a taut guillotine from guard, forcing the issue with less than two minutes elapsed in the first round.

Featuring on that event’s main card, Tijuana all-rounder, Moreno retained his number-one rank at flyweight and earned his premier title shot under the UFC’s banner with a buzzer-beating stoppage of Brandon Royval. Siezing on a dislocated shoulder from the latter, Moreno unloaded with a lengthy barrage, stopping the Fortis MMA student.

Tonight’s co-main event features two of the most dangerous lightweights in promotional history. Former interim titleholder, Tony ‘El Cucuy’ Ferguson makes his Octagon return in the search of a return to winning ways via a massive outing with Charles ‘Do Bronx’ Oliveira. The winner of seven straight, Oliveira, who has notched the most submission wins in the history of the UFC sits at the #5 rank at 155-pounds, and looks to add Ferguson to a March stoppage of soon to be common-opposition, Kevin Lee — ultimately earning a title opportunity.

Oxnard favorite, Ferguson seen his stunning, division-tying twelve-fight unbeaten spree snapped by Justin Gaethje at UFC 249 in May on short-notice, and hopes to return to the winner’s enclosure for the first time in a staggering seven-years. Big implications, possible title, in fact, for the winner of this one.

Deiveson Figueiredo vs. Brandon Moreno – UFC 256 Staff Predictions

Deiveson FigueiredoJordan Ellis: I’m really torn heading into this UFC 256 main event. It’s hard to ignore all the hype around Deiveson Figueiredo right now. Deiveson Figueiredo

Jordan Ellis: I’m really torn heading into this UFC 256 main event. It’s hard to ignore all the hype around Deiveson Figueiredo right now. The Brazilian seems on his way to earning fighter of the year. However, I’m not quite convinced he is the heir to Demetrious Johnson at 125lbs. I’m also a big fan of Brandon Moreno who has looked brilliant since re-joining the UFC. He’s very capable of causing an upset and will almost certainly provide sterner tests than Joseph Benavidez and Alex Perez. Unfortunately, I think this shot has come a little early against a prime Figueiredo who should win a fun and competitive fight over five rounds.

Prediction: Deiveson Figueiredo

Ross Markey: I personally believe Moreno has many more tools than November’s fallen title challenger, Alex Perez, however, overlooking potential Fighter of the Year, Figueriedo — well you can do that at your own peril. Figueiredo has looked spectacular in 2020, and largely, throughout his entire Octagon stint. He’s got that nastiness and finishing instinct, which lacked with both Henry Cejudo and Demetrious Johnson before him. Figueiredo to score a second-round stoppage of the gritty Moreno, although I’m straying away from a predicted method on this one.

Prediction: Deiveson Figueiredo

Ryan MacCarthy: I’ve gotta go with Figueiredo in this one. He’s just too violent as a 125er and he capitalizes on any mistakes you make. I think Moreno is a scrappy guy, that creates intense sequences. You can’t do that with Figueiredo. You get in a bad spot with him, he finishes the fight. Until someone shows me they can deal with Figueiredo, I can’t pick against him, he’s just been too good up until this point in my eyes, he’s dominated every title fight he’s been in. I love watching Figueiredo fight. He’s what the Flyweight division needs. He just runs through people. He doesn’t just go to decisions every fight. I wouldn’t be surprised if this one goes into the second or third rounds, because Moreno is scrappy and loose, but i do see Figueiredo finishing him before the 4th round.

Prediction: Deiveson Figueiredo

Abhinav Kini: I’m personally a fan of Brandon Moreno but I don’t see how he will be able to get things done against Deiveson Figueiredo. Figueiredo is just too well-rounded with dynamite in his fists. Moreno is definitely quick and well-rounded in his own right but whether he can avoid that right hand from Figueiredo remains to be seen. I see Figueiredo getting the knockout potentially in the second or third.

Prediction: Deiveson Figueiredo

Harry O’Connor: Moreno would’ve been delighted to get the win over Royval a few weeks back, although the fight ended in a way no one wanted it to, he rightly deserves this title shot. I just can’t see him winning. For me Figueiredo is going to be the next star of the UFC, I’ve been extremely impressed with how dominant he’s looked in his past few fights, from the negative of missing weight against Benavidez, to bouncing back the way he has and he’s looked incredible doing it, I expect him to win by KO tomorrow in the second round, go on to defend the title a few more times and then move up and make a serious challenge for the Bantamweight belt. Figueiredo by KO in round 2.

Prediction: Deiveson Figueiredo

Tony Ferguson vs. Charles Oliveira – UFC 256 Staff Predictions

Tony FergusonJordan Ellis: I’m backing Tony Ferguson in the UFC 256 co-main event. Despite boasting an impressive run Charles Oliveira hasn’t beat anyone even close to the level of ‘El Cucuy’ who despite having a bad night at UFC 249 is still one of the best lightweights in MMA history. I’m expecting him to be back […]

Tony Ferguson

Jordan Ellis: I’m backing Tony Ferguson in the UFC 256 co-main event. Despite boasting an impressive run Charles Oliveira hasn’t beat anyone even close to the level of ‘El Cucuy’ who despite having a bad night at UFC 249 is still one of the best lightweights in MMA history. I’m expecting him to be back on form tonight and predict he’ll edge this fight out on the judge’s cards.

Prediction: Tony Ferguson

Ross Markey: Talk about a fan-favorite matchup. Implications are massive in this clash of Ferguson and Oliveira. Another slip up for the former could realistically see him slide down the lightweight pile for the first time in his career. For Oliveira, the promotion’s most prolific grappler is on the cusp of a title challenge, and a victory over someone of Ferguson’s ilk will surely grant him that title tilt. It’s a case of been there done that for Ferguson, while Oliveira has blitzed through seven straight, it has to be said, only Kevin Lee presents a stern, high-level opponent, and even at that — he’s hugely inconsistent. Oliveira has learned to cope with pressure since his defeats to Ricardo Lamas, Paul Felder and Anthony Pettis, but I’m picking Ferguson to do enough pressing damage in the first and second before an eventual third round stoppage.

Prediction: Tony Ferguson

Ryan MacCarthy: Two of the best Lightweights in the world will throw hands, in the peoples co main event, imo the fight of the night, because well Tony Ferguson is apart of this fight. I really wish this were 5 rounds. Ferguson, coming off a loss, I don’t think we’re gonna see him hungrier than he is now. He’s trying to get better. When guys get like that, they’re more dangerous. He’s looking at the holes in the boat and trying to fill them. Tony is coming in, maybe he made some tweaks. I think he has all the skill to get rid of Oliveira in this one. I think Oliveira is not gonna be able to push the pace with Tony for three rounds. He’ll get Oliveira tired and catch him. I think Oliveira can certainly pull off the upset here, but I see Tony finishing this in the 2nd or 3rd rounds. Tony Ferguson can set himself up for a MAJOR fight with a win here.

Prediction: Tony Ferguson

Abhinav Kini: This is yet another dream fight in the lightweight division that we will get to see as Tony Ferguson is virtually fighting a clone of himself in Charles Oliveira. But despite their similarities, I still feel Ferguson is on another level and will be able to break Oliveira who has been known to fall short whenever he faces a really top fighter. There are question marks over Ferguson from his last fight but he still had his moments even in defeat and I don’t think he’s done just yet. Ferguson via second round TKO.

Prediction: Tony Ferguson

Harry O’Connor: When Tony Ferguson fights, you know you’re going to get a show, his last fight against Gaethje absolutely solidifies that statement. However Charles Oliveira looks incredibly tough right now. I think Tony may have taken too much damage in his last fight, he took one hell of a beating and he did not look good when the fight got stopped, if this was early on in Tony’s career I would say he could bounce back, but he’s 36 and I can’t see anyone picking up at that age after a beating like that, especially against Oliveira – if anyone can do it though, Tony can. I’m going to go with Oliveira with a third round submission.

Prediction: Charles Oliveira
