Most of the focus of the MMA world is understandably fixated on tonight’s UFC 217 from Madison Square Garden, but last night’s Bellator 186 from University Park, Penn., delivered a night of hard-hitting MMA action for fans.

Ryan Bader defended his Bellator light heavyweight title with an impressive stoppage of Linton Vassell, and Ilima-Lei McFarlane became the first Bellator women’s flyweight champ with a fifth-round stoppage of Emily Ducote.

But the best highlight reel of the event undoubtedly went to debuting fighter Tywan Claxton, who made as thunderous an MMA debut you could dream of when he knocked out Jonathan Bonilla-Bowman with a video game-esque flying knee that appeared to rise up from the depths of Hades.

Check out the insane fight-ending knee right here:

It’s finally UFC 198 fight day, as we await what could easily be the best pay-per-view card of the year, and that’s quite a statement considering UFC 200 is just around the corner. That bold statement is backed up by a huge line up of some of the promotion’s biggest stars, including a stacked line up of Brazilian MMA legends. Fabricio Wedum defends the heavyweight strap in the main event, Vitor Belfort battles Jacare Souza in the co-main event and, among many other great fights, Cris Cyborg debuts against Leslie Smith.

One young Brazilian prospect who hopes to one day get mentioned in the elite few to go down as all time Brazilian greats is Thomas Almeida.

Almeida 1

‘Thominhas’ is an undefeated UFC bantamweight who trains in the renowned Chute Boxe Academy, and he’s been making mincemeat of the competition so far. With a stellar 21-0 record, Almeida fights with destruction of his opponents in the forefront of his gameplan. Some of his knockouts are instant classics, such as his most recent finish of Anthony Birchak in late 2015.

During his four fight UFC streak, the former Legacy FC bantamweight champion has won fight night bonuses in every appearance, with three wins coming by way of stoppage. He’s being pegged for a very bright future in the UFC, and it’s no surprise.

Almeida Knee

The free fight video we’ll be looking at today is the thoroughly exciting showdown with Brad Pickett at UFC 189. For obvious reasons this fight flew under the radar to an extent, although Almeida did win a performance bonus for the brutal flying knee KO.

The scrap was a back-and-forth exciting war that provided one of the most memorable knockouts of the year, but was a little overshadowed by the co-main and main event that featured a crazy battle between Rory MacDonald and Robbie Lawler, and Conor McGregor’s interim title win against Chad Mendes.

Watch the awesome Thomas Almeida vs. Brad Pickett video and get in the mood for tonight’s UFC 198 madness!

SportsPotato: Cardinals Center Fielder Peter Bourjos KO’s Teammate With Vicious Sliding Knee

(via Getty)

With all the vicious knockouts taking place at Fight Night 75 and Bellator 143 over the weekend, you’d think it would be damn near impossible for any non-combat sport to top MMA in terms of pure violence. But then, the work week rolls in and professional baseball somehow takes the cake.

In the 7th inning of last night’s Cardinals-Pirates game, Pittsburgh third baseman Josh Harrison drilled a shot to center field, drawing in both center fielder Peter Bourjos and left fielder Stephen Piscotty in at break neck speed in an attempt to field the ball. Piscotty opted for a head first dive to make the play, while Bourjos went with a knee-first slide. The resulting collision was undeniably one of the most horrific knockouts in professional baseball history.

Piscotty was immediately rendered unconscious by the brutal knee and eventually had to be carted off the field on a stretcher. The good news is that the rookie only appeared to suffer a concussion from the collision and not the broken jaw most MMA fans would have put him on as soon as he started bleeding from his mouth like a stuck pig. (Was that too far? I don’t even know where the line is when it comes to empathy anymore. MMA has truly desensitized me.)

Let’s hope Piscotty is able to have a quick turnaround from such a horrendous injury. In the meantime, God damn, baseball. You scary.

Knockout(s) of the Day: A Vicious Flying Knee From Brazil and a Spinning Hook Kick From Jersey

Thanks to CP reader Lutkus for passing along this incredible footage from Talent MMA Circuit 10, which went down Sao Paulo, Brazil last weekend. Taken from a flyweight tilt between Chute Box’s Felipe Efrain and Marcelo Bispo, this is one of the most on-point flying knee knockouts you’ll see all week within the next two hours. Guaranteed.

After the jump: The far-and-away nastiest spinning back kick knockout you’ll ever see in this article, complete with a Dropkick Murphys soundtrack.

Not only was Paul Felder’s brilliant spinning back kick knockout of Craig Johnson good enough to secure him his first lightweight title defense at CFFC 38 last weekend, it was apparently enough to score him a UFC contract. Now 8-0 in professional competition with six TKOs (including a second round smashup of TUF 12 alum Marc Stevens), Felder is definitely a fighter to keep an eye out for, and is currently scheduled to face Jason Saggo at The Halifax Card on October 4th.

Morning GIF: Brian Rogers Destroys Adrian Miles With a Flying Knee at Bellator 119

(Props: @ZProphet_MMA)

Two weeks after Chris Beal gave us a spectacular walk-off flying knee knockout in the UFC, Bellator middleweight Brian Rogers landed one of his own against Adrian Miles, during the prelims of last night’s Bellator 119 event in Rama, Ontario, Canada. The way Miles crumples in a Nelmark-esque heap is pretty gnarly — especially because his eyes remain open when he’s out. Yeesh.

This was actually Rogers’s third career victory via flying knee. You can see his previous two after the jump…

Watch Lyoto Machida’s Brother Nearly Separate a Fighter’s Head From His Body With a Brutal Knee [Video]

(0:31)

During the furor of Bellator’s final season nine fight card, Lyoto Machida’s brother Chinzo Machida pulled off what Pat Miletich said the nastiest knee-inflicted KO he’d ever seen in his life—and it’s the nastiest we’ve ever seen in our lives too.

It was a flying knee to the head of one Brian Wood, who unfortunately shot right into Machida’s kneecap as it approached his face at 100 miles per hour. Wood was on the ground for several minutes after the fight stopped and left in a stretcher. In case you don’t have access to video, here’s the GIF courtesy of @ZProphet_MMA.

The victory was Chinzo Machida’s first since his MMA debut back in 2005 . He fought again in 2006, lost, and then took a furlough from the sport until 2010 but lost that fight too. At a disappointing 1-2, it seemed like Chinzo Machida was fated to be a Lance Evans or a Jason Guida—a Luigi to one of MMA’s many Marios. Maybe now he’ll be able to carve out his own name in the sport, but he better work fast: He’s already 36 years old.

There are also other highlights from the RFA 11 card on the video, enjoy.
