Eight Biggest Suspensions Of The USADA-UFC Era

The USADA-UFC era has resulted in some incredibly high-profile suspensions.

The United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) formed Oct., 1, 2000, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Just a few months later, Congress recognized USADA as the official anti-doping agency of the Pan American Games, the Paralympics, and the Olympics.

USADA has been at the forefront of anti-doping in athletics for nearly two decades, helping catch cheaters and level the playing field in sports such as boxing, cycling, and swimming, just to name a few. On July, 1, 2015, mixed martial arts became the latest sport to work hand in hand with the non-profit organization, specifically the UFC.

The USADA-UFC experiment is just over three years old now, and at times it would appear they have been doing exactly what they were brought in to do. That is, help mitigate the doping going on in the UFC. But other times, the fight game has been left scratching its head in disbelieve at the inconsistency of it all.

It’s lead to several high-profile suspensions nonetheless, some with suspicious circumstances and some that were more clear-cut.

We took a look back at the eight biggest suspensions of the USADA-UFC era right here:

Chad Mendes

Chad “Money” Mendes returned to action at UFC Boise last weekend (July 14, 2018) after serving a two-year suspension for testing positive for a growth hormone releasing hexapeptide (GHRP-6).

The Team Alpha Male fighter denied knowingly taking any banned substance but did offer up a possible explanation for the failed test. Mendes said he has a condition known as plaque psoriasis and perhaps some of the cream he used to treat his ailment was tainted with the substance in question.

Whether you believe Mendes or not, it makes no difference. “Money” received a two-year suspension for his failed out-of-competition sample that was collected on May 17, 2016.

Oddly enough Mendes chose not to appeal the failed test and thus is perhaps culpable at some level.

UFC bantamweight Francisco Rivera has been dealt an almost-damning blow to his mixed martial arts career.

‘Cisco’ was given a four-year suspension by USADA following a failed drug test leading into 2016’s UFC 201.

Rivera tested positive for clenbuterol, and initially blamed its detection on tainted meat eaten while vacationing in Mexico. However, Rivera could not prove he was there prior to the failed test, and USADA ultimately decided upon a four-year suspension.

The decision was made official this week following an evidentiary hearing last month.

USASA released a statement on Rivera’s suspension and failed test;

“(USADA) concluded that the clenbuterol levels detected in [Rivera’s] sample were inconsistent with what could be expected from meat contamination,” and that Rivera was “unable to provide independently verifiable evidence to support his claim that he had traveled to Northern Mexico and ingested meat in the days leading up to the relevant sample collection.”

To make matters worse for Rivera, USADA claims that the UFC bantamweight falsified evidence in an attempt to prove his innocence:

“(USADA’s investigation) revealed that several pieces of evidence presented by Rivera to USADA and the arbitrator had been falsified to support the athlete’s claims that the substance had originated from contaminated meat in Mexico.”

Rivera’s failed test combined with his attempts to deceive USADA led to his harsh four-year suspension. He won’t be eligible to fight again until August 2020, when Rivera will be nearly 40 years old.

Do you agree with USADA’s ruling on Rivera’s suspension?

Two bantamweights did battle inside the Octagon for the second bout on the main card of UFC 201. Alliance MMA member Erik Perez (16-6) fought Francisco Rivera (11-7, 1 NC). “El Goyito” looked to build off his decision win over Taylor Lapilus back in Nov. 2015. “Cisco” hoped to avoid the fifth loss in his last six bouts and a potential pink slip.

“El Goyito” earned his second straight win.

Rivera drew first with two left hooks. Perez had his uppercut and high kick blocked. A right hand found the jaw for Rivera. “El Goyito” caught a kick and landed some punches. Perez scored a takedown briefly and held “Cisco” against the fence. He landed a knee on the break. An inside leg kick found the mark for Perez. The story of round one was Rivera’s patience wearing off once Perez found success on the outside.

An inside leg kick sent Rivera off balance and to the mat. Perez landed some punches as “Cisco” returned to his feet.
“El Goyito” went for a spinning back elbow, grazing his opponent. Perez built off his late success in the first round and blood trickled on the right side of Rivera’s head. Perez landed a leg kick that caused Rivera to wince. He capitalized with a takedown and remained in control until the end of the round.

The two fighters came out guns blazing in the final stanza. Rivera landed some punches, but swung so hard he fell over and appeared to punch himself out. Perez scored a takedown and blood dripped from the head of “Cisco.” Perez landed body punches to keep the fight from being stood back up. Rivera returned to his feet, but “El Goyito” kept the clinch until 15 seconds was left. The final horn sounded with Rivera missing a high kick.

All three judges saw the fight for Perez and he was awarded the win.

Final Result: Erik Perez def. Francisco Rivera via unanimous decision (30-26, 30-26, 29-28)
