Gennady Golovkin tipped to retire from boxing he's taking time away

Former two-time unified champion Gennady Golovkin appears to be walking away from the world of boxing according to Mexican legend Erik Morales.

Originally the man that Morales trains, undefeated 160-pounder Jaime Munguia, was hoping to step inside the squared circle with Golovkin this summer, but according to Morales, it sounds like GGG will be on the shelf for an “indefinite period of time.”

“I don’t think (we are looking for that fight)”, Morales said in an interview with IZQUIERDAZO. “What I understand, what I was told by the (promoting) company, is that Golovkin told them that he is leaving boxing for an indefinite period of time. And that, if he decides to come back, he will let everybody know. So, we can’t think of Golovkin, right now.”

Erik Morales Says Gennady Golovkin is Not An Option Anymore

Hailing from Kazakhstan, Gennady Golovkin has been revered as one of the best boxers in the world over his 16-year career. If GGG does walk away from the sport altogether, he will leave with an impressive 42-2-1 record, with the only blemishes coming against boxing sensation Canelo Alvarez. His last appearance came in September 2022 when he suffered his second loss to Alvarez at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

“(Fernando) Beltran, and Golden Boy, Oscar de la Hoya in this case, will define who will be Jaime’s next opponent”, Morales said. “We all would like it to be Golovkin, all the team, and especially Jaime. But Golovkin is not there anymore.”

It’s possible that DAZN could offer Gennady Golovkin a truckload of money to accept a fight with the 41-0 Jaime Munguia, but the fact remains that Munguia is not a marquee name. At least, not in the same sense as other potential opponents such as David Benavidez, Dmitry Bivol, and Caleb Plant.

Dana White claims Canelo Alvarez x Gennady Golovkin 3 ‘happened too late’, comments on PPV buyrate

UFC president, Dana White has claimed that last weekend’s trilogy title fight between middleweight kingpin, Canelo Alvarez, and former champion, Gennady Golovkin “happened too late” in the pair’s respective careers, as well as speculating on the reported buyrate as a direct result of late matchmaking.

Sharing the squared circle for the third time last weekend at the T-Mobile Arena, Canelo managed to turn in a one-sided unanimous decision win over three-time foe, Golovkin – after scoring a prior close decision win in the pair’s rematch.

Initially fighting back in September 2017, Canelo and Golovkin battled over the course of 12 rounds en route to a split draw, as pundits questioned the scorecards in both the first and second bout between the duo.

Speaking following last night’s Contender Series event at the UFC apex facility, promotional president, Dana White reacted to reports that Canelo x Golovkin 3 drew 575,000 pay-per-view buys, claiming that the reason likely comes due to untimely matchmaking in the pair’s rivalry.

“Yeah, 100 percent,” Dana White told assembled media during his post-fight media availability. “The fight (Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin 3) was too late. That fight should have happened four years ago.”

White’s comments come off the back of prior criticism from former boxing world champion and Golden Boy Promotions leader, Oscar De La Hoya – who lambasted Canelo’s performance and claimed Golovkin was too old to be competing at the highest level.

“The truth is everyone is afraid of speaking the truth, the fight (between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin) was a f*cking dud,” Oscar De La Hoya tweeted. “GGG was old ass (sic) f*ck and Canelo (Alvarez) can’t hold (Bernard) Hopkins’ jockstrap.”

Canelo Alvarez managed to rebound from defeat with his win over Gennady Golovkin

With this month’s win, Canelo rebounded from just his second career loss after he dropped a unanimous decision defeat against Dmitry Bivol back in May in a pursuit for the WBA light heavyweight crown.

Oscar De La Hoya slams Canelo Alvarez’s ‘f*cking dud’ win against Gennady Golovkin in deleted Twitter tirade

Oscar De La Hoya has taken issue with middleweight kingpin and former Golden Boy Promotion’s client, Canelo Alvarez’s unanimous decision win over Kazakhstan native, Gennady Golovkin in the pair’s trilogy matchup over the weekend in Las Vegas, Nevada – describing the capping matchup as a “f*cking dud”.

De La Hoya, a former multiple-time world champion himself, ripped former promotional star, Alvarez for his second career win over the veteran, Golovkin, as well as claiming the latter was “old”.

Thrice sharing the squared circle, Canelo first met with Golovkin back in September 2017, with the duo battling over the course of 12 rounds to a controversial split decision draw.

The following year in the same month, Canelo managed to defeat Golovkin – handing the Kazakh his first career loss in another dubious and controversial majority decision effort.

Canelo Alvarez cruises to one-sided judging win over Gennady Golovkin

Sharing the ring with Golovkin last weekend in the third matchup between the two, Canelo Alvarez, who successfully defended his five championships, turned in a rather one-sided unanimous decision win over the former, who was questioned for his sudden lax in output compared to his prior fights with the Mexico favorite.

Sharing his thoughts on the blockbuster pairing, De La Hoya lambasted the fight between Canelo and Golovkin, as well as claiming former world champion, Bernard Hopkins was a much better fighter than the former, in a now-deleted tweet.

De La Hoya was scheduled to make his boxing return last year as part of a Triller Fight Club event against former UFC light heavyweight champion, Vitor Belfort, however, was replaced by former boxing champion, Evander Holyfield on short notice after testing positive for COVID-19.

The trilogy between boxing stars Canelo Álvarez and Gennady ‘Triple G’ Golovkin is set for September 17th at a TBD location.

Golovkin announced the booking of his trilogy with Canelo in a post on his Instagram page.

“It’s official! See you on September 17,” Golovkin posted.

Shortly after the initial announcement, Golovkin posted a hype video featuring himself and Canelo to get fans excited for the trilogy.

“The Trilogy,” Golovkin captioned.

Canelo and Golovkin initially fought in 2017, with the fight going to a draw and Canelo retaining his boxing titles. The rematch was booked a year later as Canelo defeated Golovkin by a decision.

Golovkin has won four boxing fights in a row, including most recently against Ryota Murata and Kamil Szeremeta.

The trilogy comes after Canelo’s first boxing defeat in nine years to Dmitry Bivol for the WBA light heavyweight title earlier this month. Before that, he had gone on one of the most impressive winning streaks in the history of the sport, with recent wins over Caleb Plant and Billy Joe Saunders.

Canelo had been linked to a potential crossover fight with UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman and there has been interest from both sides. But it seems as if the chances of that happening are on the backburner, at least for now.

The Canelo vs. Golovkin trilogy had been agreed upon back in 2020, but the fight never came to fruition.

The winner will cap off one of the most electric boxing rivalries in the history of the sport. Five middleweight titles will be on the line when Canelo and Golovkin get in the ring for a third, and more than likely final time.

Are you pumped for Canelo vs. Triple-G 3?

Reigning middleweight champion, Canelo Alvarez has vowed to make his return to the squared circle by September for a trilogy clash with Kazakhstan favorite, Gennady Golovkin – honoring a prior agreement, before then switching attention to a second showdown against light heavyweight kingpin, Dmitry Bivol.

Canelo Alvarez, who headlined an MGM Grand Garden Arena card against Russian puncher, Bivol earlier this month, suffered his first professional loss in over eight years, with his sole other loss coming at the hands of former multiple division best, Floyd Mayweather back in 2013.

Embarking on an undefeated run of 16 fights without a defeat since then, the Guadalajara fan-favorite suffered a unanimous decision loss to Russian light heavyweight best, Bivol in ‘Sin City’.

Canelo Alvarez welcomes a third fight with Gennady Golovkin in September

However, prior to his title challenge against Bivol in Las Vegas, Canelo was slated to meet with Golovkin in a third fight between the two before the close of this year. And as far as the Mexico native is concerned, a third fight will be honored with Golovkin – before he pursues a rematch against Bivol.

“In the next few days we will announce the September fight,” Canelo Alvarez told ESPN Knockout during a recent interview. “Surely, it will be against GGG (Gennady Golovkin) because we already had that agreement, but I will also fight (Dmitry) Bivol again.”

Whilst Canelo suffered a unanimous decision loss to Bivol earlier this month, Golovkin, on the other hand, managed to rally himself from an adversity filled fight to stop Ryota Murata with a ninth round TKO victory also last month.

In the two prior fights between Canelo and Golovkin, the pair first battled over the course of 12 rounds to split decision draw in September 2017, before Canelo defeated Golovkin with a majority decision victory in a rematch exactly a year later.
