Inaugural BMF titleholder Jorge Masvidal has reacted to the news Brazilian submission specialist Gilbert Burns has been forced out of his UFC 251 fight against welterweight champion Kamaru Usman.

Burns was expected to face ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ on ‘Fight Island’ next weekend, July 11. Unfortunately, ‘Durinho’ and two of his team tested positive for COVID-19 shortly before they were due to fly out the island for fight night. Therefore, he has been pulled from UFC 251 leaving Usman without an opponent.

Masvidal took to Twitter after hearing the news, posting the following message suggesting he is game to fight at UFC 251.

‘Gamebred’ is the number one contender at welterweight and was in discussions to fight Usman for many months before things turned sour. Masvidal claims the UFC wanted him to take a 50 percent pay cut for the biggest fight of his life. Since then he has been involved in a bitter, public spat with the promotion who he accuses of trying to strongarm him into the fight.

“I already explained why I signed a new deal. It’s either take it or leave it and not get paid. I would’ve signed another deal if it was done in good faith. He called me night before he wants to announce and tell me take or it leave it. That’s not negotiating that’s strong arming”

Masvidal has since pointed out the various other top UFC stars who are prepared to walk away from the sport. He has called his ongoing pay dispute the fight of his life and something he will not back down from, he wrote.

“Why are all the major names having issues? Conor, Jones, cejudo. We have to take it or retire. I love fighting and this is the fight of our lives.”

Masvidal joins Colby Covington in seemingly offering his services for UFC 251. As of right now, it remains unclear if the promotion will attempt to find Usman an alternative opponent or if his fight with Burns will take place at a later date.

Do you think Jorge Masvidal will fill in for Gilbert Burns at UFC 251?

Gilbert Burns has tested positive for COVID-19 and will no longer be fighting for the welterweight title against Kamaru Usman at UFC 251 on July 11.

Mike Bohn of MMA Junkie broke the news late last night, he wrote.

“Burns traveled from Florida, where he trained for UFC 251, to Las Vegas. The promotion is using the city as a hub to send athletes overseas to Abu Dhabi, testing them for COVID-19 before flying out to the Middle East. Burns’ test result came back positive, as well as his brother and cornerman, Herbert Burns, and coach Greg Jones. All three men did not board the charter fight leaving Las Vegas.”

Burns later took to social media to confirm the news and vow to get over the deadly virus, he wrote.

“devastating news, not feeling well but I’m going to win this battle! Stay safe out there! Much love.”

‘Durinho’ is currently riding a four-fight win streak which includes to high-profile victories over Demian Maia and former welterweight champion Tyron Woodley.

Burns received his surprise title shot after number one contender Jorge Masvidal became embroiled in a pay dispute with the UFC. As of right now, it is unclear if the promotion will seek a replacement opponent for Usman.

Title challenger Gilbert Burns has responded to comments made by Jorge Masvidal regarding his pay for the upcoming title fight between him and teammate Kamaru Usman.

In a video, on his YouTube channel, Jorge Masvidal offered his comments on the fight that was initially supposed to see him challenge for the title in place of Burns.

“They offered me considerably less money than what I should be getting, and it didn’t work, then they offer (Burns) the least amount of money that they would take. That’s what they did. They offered me, then when I said no, they offered a couple of other people until they got to Gilbert.”

“Gilbert wasn’t their first thing. Nobody on a worldwide scale knows him. I’m not dissing his skillset, but he’s not a known guy, so of course, he took the lowest money possible to fight a title.”

Speaking to MMAFighting Burns shared that he was happy with the money he will receive for this upcoming bout.

“They offered me a great amount of money,” Burns said. “More money than a lot of guys get fighting for the title. I’m happy about my situation. But I’m putting myself in that position to get those fights.”

“I understand Masvidal’s side, he wants more money. But I think it all comes down to management. If you just signed a deal, how come you going to ask for a new deal? It just doesn’t make sense. I think it’s all in the negotiations.”

Burns is referring to Masvidal recently renewing his contract with the UFC before asking for more money to take the fight against Usman at UFC 251. Currently, Masvidal has no scheduled return to the octagon but says he is interested in the rematch with Nate Diaz.

“Of course I would love to fight with Nate, just because I didn’t get to put him to sleep how I wanted to.”
