Teixeira A ‘Genius’ In Working Out And Training

Glover Teixeira’s recent resurgence is a result of his new hybrid system of training according to coach John Hackleman.

Teixeira recently defeated Anthony Smith via fifth-round TKO in the UFC Jacksonville headliner last week. After facing some early adversity, the Brazilian dominated the rest of the fight as he now enjoys a four-fight winning streak at the age of 40.

Teixeira is no stranger to bouncing back from adversity and using his conditioning to his advantage. After all, he did the same in his second-round submission win over the hard-hitting Ion Cutelaba last year as well.

And for Hackleman, this recent run from his pupil is a result of no longer overtraining but combining two different regiments — one from himself and one from the UFC Performance Institute.

“He has so many natural attributes and he has such a hard work ethic,” Hackleman told MMA Junkie. “So in conditioning – he has our ‘Pit’ conditioning program and that’s kinda well known, Joe Rogan’s talked about it, a lot of people talk about it. But with that said, some guys seem to take it to an extreme like Court McGee. Sometimes they train a little too hard that when it comes to fight time, that training has been left in the gym or they don’t have as much for the cage.

“Now, Glover trains as hard, he does the old ‘Pit’ training, but now he’s also doing some of that, I think it’s called PI, the UFC guys do so. They send him workouts to combine with ours, it seems to work like a charm because he tends to push a little too hard. But now with these PI guys, they’ve kind of kept him in check and give him different workouts for his other days and they’re shorter and more efficient than mine.”

Many complained about the late stoppage involving Teixeira and Smith. There notably seemed to be many moments where the 40-year-old could have maybe gone all out for the finish.

Instead, he remained calm and maintained his pace to eventually get the TKO in the fifth round. While others may have blown their wad in trying to get the finish, Teixeira’s conditioning ultimately helped him earn the stoppage.

“He’s a genius when it comes to working out and training,” Hackleman added. “So he’s taken those two and, on his own, created his own hybrid system of training. He’s taken the ‘Pit’ old school training, this PI training, put them together and you saw the results. That was the result of his conditioning.”

Anthony Smith Would’ve Fired His Corner For Throwing In The Towel Against Glover Teixeira

Light-heavyweight contender Anthony Smith has revealed his corner are under strict instructions to never throw in the towel and have been told they will not be a part of his team if they ever decided to try save him in a fight.

Smith was on the wrong end of a brutal beatdown against Glover Teixeira suffering a long list of injuries including the loss of teeth before referee Jason Herzog stepped in to stop the fight in the fifth and final round. Since the fight, the ‘Lionheart’ corner has come under criticism for failing to pull their fighter out despite the fact he was visibly done fighting and unable to win.

Speaking to ESPN Smith revealed his corner stepping in to save him was never really an option as they face the sack for making such a move, he said.

“I feel bad because they’re in a tough spot. I don’t know if they wanted to stop it or if they thought about it. But, I take that option away from them. Before any of this ever happened, before anything, I took that option away a long time ago. If you want to sit in my corner, that’s my rule. You don’t stop the fight. Leave it in my hands. Don’t take it out of my hands. So, I’ve told them before, if you stop the fight, if you throw the towel in, you can go ahead and walk back to the locker room by yourself because I’ll never stand by you again.

“I don’t need liabilities in my corner. The way that I fight, I end up in shitty spots sometimes. And that’s just how it goes. Most of the time, I’ve been able to come back and win. And sometimes, you can’t. Sometimes you just run out of time, and sometimes it’s just too high of a hill to climb,” Anthony Smith continued. “But, I don’t need those liabilities. I don’t need to be getting to bad spots, working my ass off to try to get to a better position, and constantly have in the back of my head worrying that my corners gonna step in and not give me the opportunity.

“Whether they did or didn’t it didn’t matter. That’s the rule. We don’t stop fights, that’s it. There are a lot of people that is on and that is the referee and the doctor. There’s a reason those people have a job. That’s their job. If he thought that it needed to be stopped, then that’s on him. If the doctor thinks that I can’t continue, then that’s on him. That’s his job, that’s what he went to school for that’s what he’s being paid for. I’m paying them [my corner]  to help me win fights. I don’t need them constantly in the back of their head worrying about how much damage I’m taking. That’s not their job, they are paid to help me win fights, that’s it.”

Many fans cringed at the damage Anthony Smith took at the hands of Glover Teixeira at UFC Jacksonville last week. Even Teixeira was a little bothered by it.

Teixeira made it four wins in a row following his fifth-round TKO win over Smith. In the process, “Lionheart” lost some teeth, suffered a broken nose, broken orbital as well as a cut under his eye.

However, the fight could have been stopped much earlier especially given the damage the Brazilian inflicted on Smith over the course of three rounds.

Some laid blame on referee Jason Herzog — who has since apologized for the late stoppage — while others believe Smith’s corner was at fault for not throwing in the towel earlier.

Teixeira: This Never Happened To Me Before

Regardless of who was at fault, the damage inflicted on Smith left a sour taste in Teixeira’s mouth.

“When he handed his own tooth to the referee and said: ‘Here, hold my tooth.’, I thought he was going to give up or that he was injured,” Teixeira said in an interview with Ag Fight (via Bloody Elbow). “I was baffled and stopped to see what that was all about. Then he handed the tooth over and I apologized to him, I told him it was part of the job. He told me ‘It is what it is’. He was still in the fight, so I kept trying to finish the fight.

“… That had never happened to me before. You always want to win and score a knockout, but we don’t want that. It’s part of the job, but to lose teeth, break a bone, I don’t want anyone to go through that. I was kind of bothered by that, but it’s part of the job.”

Light-heavyweight contender Anthony Smith has spoken out for the first time since suffering a brutal one-sided beat down at the hands of Glover Teixeira. ‘Lionheart’ was the favourite heading into his main event fight against the 40-year-old Brazilian. Smith looks good early on but the tide started to turn in round two and he took a serious beating and suffered a bunch of injuries against Teixeria before the referee mercifully stepped in to wave off the fight in round five.

Was Anthony Smith Let Down By His Corner?

During the fight commentator, Daniel Cormier was very critical about Smiths’ corner who for him were giving him too many instructions which he was trying to implement and as a result quickly tiring. The corner which included UFC welterweight James Krause also faced widespread criticism for refusing to pull ‘Lionheart’ out of the fight even after he went back to the corner after losing two consecutive rounds 10-8 saying his teeth had fallen out.

Smith took to Instagram earlier today to speak out for the first time since suffering a loss against Teixeira. He seemed content at home with his family and urged people to stop focusing on what his corner did or didn’t do to protect him, he wrote the following alongside a picture with his daughter.

“Everyone is arguing about good stop, bad stop, bad corner, good corner…blah blah blah. I’m still winning. I’m good, and I’m exactly where i need to be, doing exactly what I’m supposed to be doing. All that time spent worrying about me needs to be spent somewhere a little more productive.”

Smith was hoping to rematch bitter rival and 205lb champion Jon Jones in the near future. He’ll now have to go back to the drawing board. First things first though Smith will need to take a seat and recover from the various injuries he sustained the other night. Meanwhile Teixeira appears to be on the cusp of another title shot, although he may need to get by one more contender if he hopes to rematch Jones.
