Georges St-Pierre plan to face Nick Diaz at UFC Fight Pass Invitational grappling match postponed

Former two-division champion, Georges St-Pierre has revealed today that he had agreed terms to face-off with former title challenger and prior Octagon foe, Nick Diaz in a UFC Fight Pass Invitational grappling match in December of this year, until the pairing was postponed as both encountered injuries.

St-Pierre, a former undisputed middleweight and welterweight champion under the banner of the organization, revealed earlier this summer that he was in line to compete in submission grappling under the banner of the UFC in December of this year.

And in the weeks following the announcement of his feature at the UFC Fight Pass Invitational in December, reports revealed how former middleweight and welterweight title challenger, Demian Maia had welcomed the bout, which had so-far failed to come to fruition.

Georges St-Pierre reveals scuppered plans to grapple Nick Diaz in December

However, per St-Pierre, a grappling rematch with prior UFC opponent, Diaz was in the works for December as he informed TSN reporter, Aaron Bronsteter until he and the Stockton veteran both suffered injury setbacks.

“Just spoke with Georges St-Pierre, who revealed that he had agreed to face Nick Diaz in his grappling bout at the UFC Fight Night Invitational in December,” Bronsteter posted on X. “Unfortunately, both suffered injuries recently and it has been postponed.”

Facing off with Diaz in a welterweight title fight defense back in March of 2013, Canadian fan-favorite, St-Pierre landed a unanimous decision win over the fan-favorite former WEC and Strikeforce gold holder.

Sidelined from the Octagon since a rematch loss to Robbie Lawler back in 2021, Diaz had announced plans for a return to combat sports earlier this year, and was recently spotted training alongside heavyweight knockout king, Derrick Lewis ahead of a planned comeback to competition.

In the main event of Fury Pro Grappling 6, Canadian MMA fighter ‘The Savage’ Gillian Robertson only needed 65-seconds to submit former UFC strawweight champion Rose Namajunas.

Gillian Robertson taps out Rose Namajunas

The Canadian-born Gillian Robertson was the favorite going in to this bout as she had a size and experience advantage. ‘The Savage’ Robertson competes at flyweight while ‘Thug’ Rose Namajunas is a top-three ranked fighter in the strawweight division. Robertson has also competed in more submission grappling matches with experience in Chael Sonnen’s Submission Underground.

After her win at 1:05 of round one, Gillian Robertson said in her post-match interview:

“I can’t even. I’m like, this is really, like, to share the mat with someone like Rose who is absolutely a dream to me … It’s just a dope opportunity to be here with Fury.”

Robertson is 11-7 overall in MMA and made her debut in the UFC in 2017. She has traded wins and losses in the organization against fighters such as ‘Meatball’ Molly McCann, Maycee Barber, Talia Santos, Miranda Maverick, Priscila Cachoeira, and a recent victory over Mariya Agapova.

‘Thug’ Rose Namajunas most recent bout was a loss to Carla Esparza for the UFC strawweight world title. Namajunas has no future bouts currently scheduled in the UFC.

Fury Pro Grappling 6 also featured other names that MMA fans will recognize. Chose Hooper defeated Clay Guida via calf Slicer. Plus, UFC veterans Ovince St. Preux, Eryk Anders, Trevin Giles, Alex Caceres, and Pat Barry all lost at this event.

Gordon Ryan details training with ‘The Mountain’ Thor Bjornsson: ‘Dumbest career choice I’ve ever made’

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu grappling ace, Gordon Ryan has described an impromptu decision to roll with ‘The Mountain’, Hafthor Bjornsson as the “dumbest” career choice he has ever made, explaining how he was fearful his head coach, John Danaher would find out of his grappling session.

Ryan, a decorated Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ace and submission grappler, recently featured at a UFC Fight Pass Invitational superfight against fellow grappler, Nick Rodriguez – emerging victoriously in the No-Gi outing, courtesy of a Fastest Escape Time victory.

Earlier this year, the 27-year-old managed to land an impressive win over Brazilian veteran and grappling star, Andre Galvao, submitting the latter with a rear-naked choke to win the ADCC superfight championship.

Gordon Ryan details grappling session with Game of Thrones star, ‘The Mountain’

Prior to his matchup with Rodriguez this past weekend, Ryan trained alongside Game of Thrones star, Bjornsson, who played ‘The Mountain’ on the critically-aclaimed show, however, expressed his fear of potentially suffering an injury during the rolling session.

“Probably the dumbest and most risky career choice I’ve ever made, because it was the day before I was supposed to compere, and I was like, man, if I get hurt, John (Danaher) is going to kill me,” Gordon Ryan told MMA Fighting. “So I told them I wasn’t drilling with them. I taught them a private before and I’m like, ‘I’m not drilling with you guys, you’re too big.’ Then the camera guy is like, ‘You guys want to roll?’ So I look around – we had just finished training, it was the day before competition, I look, see John is nowhere to be found, and I’m like, ‘Let’s do a quick one.’”

“So I trained with them, and Martins (Licis) actually used to wrestle so he has some good instincts,” Gordon Ryan explained. “He has a good base, he’s hard to sweep, he’s super strong, he’s a lot more compact than Thor. Thor’s a lot bigger and longer. Obviously, just the strongest guys you’re ever going to touch from every position, but believe it our not, the mechanics and the body position mean a lot more than the overall strength.”

“When you have misplaced strength, you tend to not feel as stone as you are,” Gordon Ryan. “I’ve trained with so many guys who are so strong in the gym, but they feel like children on the mats. It’s very weird how it translates. These guys are obviously strong in the gym and strong on the mats because they’re just so strong, but I’ve trained with bodybuilders before, and without the body positioning, it’s hard to really feel strong.”

Sean Brady

Sean Brady had an impressive year with the UFC picking up two wins in 2021 including a decision victory over Welterweight contender Michael Chiesa. It appears his success has transferred over to Fury Grappling as well as he was able to secure the upset victory over Craig Jones at last night’s competition.

Neither of the two was able to secure takedowns, sweeps, passes, or submission attempts during the bout. Jones was also having to compete without being able to use his wide-range skillset as Fury Grappling 3’s rules didn’t allow for heel hooks in matchups against UFC athletes.

Brady, who was competing in his hometown of Philadelphia, spoke to his local fans following on from his victory.

“Craig’s the best grappler in the world, you know. I’m a jiu-jitsu guy but I’m a MMA guy, too. So, I just wanted to use my pressure, use my top game…. I’m so happy to be here in front of my fans in Philly. No matter what, Craig Jones is great, but I wasn’t losing in my hometown. “ (transcribed by the JiuJitsutimes)

What’s next for Sean Brady?

There is some hype building around Brady, maybe even not quite enough hype. Following on from his victory over Michael Chiesa, Brady earned himself the #9 slot in the welterweight rankings and now will be looking for his next opponent to begin his ascent to the top. Welterweight is running out of imminent contenders for current champion Kamaru Usman, so a big victory in his next bout could have a serious impact on his trajectory.

One matchup to consider is Belal Muhammad, coming off the back of a dominant performance over Stephen Thompson if Belal can’t secure a matchup against a top five-ranked opponent, stylistically these fighters would pair off nicely. Another option although less likely is Jorge Masvidal, given ‘Gamebred’ has already had two unsuccessful attempts at welterweight gold, his interest could now turn to take out some of the upcoming names in the division, and for Brady, if he were ever to get this fight it adds another experienced name onto his resume.

Khabib Nurmagomedov is on top of the mixed martial arts (MMA) world right now. He recently secured a massive fourth-round submission (watch full highlights here) over Conor McGregor in the main event of last weekend’s UFC 229 from Las Vegas. Khabib’s performance was by far the biggest of his undefeated career.

All is not perfect in his world, however. The Dagestani champion caused a chaotic scene when he jumped into the crowd to fight McGregor’s teammate Dillon Danis. To top it off, three of his teammates rushed the Octagon and got into it with McGregor. They were arrested but Mcgregor didn’t press charges.

That adds up to Khabib being on the sidelines for quite some time, and possibly even worse. He could conceivably be stripped of his belt and will be fined. The champion could have a lot of time on his hands as a result. And he might be able to spend more time with his family, something he chooses to keep under wraps unlike McGregor.

McGregor is often seen with longtime girlfriend Dee Devlin and their son, Conor Jr. The much quieter Khabib has obviously chosen a more secluded lifestyle.

Khabib’s father Abdulmanap says he’s going to punish his son tougher than the UFC does, but we see precious little from Khabib’s wife.

The undefeated lightweight king has yet to even reveal her name to the public. “The Eagle” has two children with his rarely-seen bride. They had a daughter in 2015 and a son in 2017. While her name is not known, they supposedly call their son Mohammed.

The couple lives in Makhachkala in the Republic of Dagestan. Khabib has often criticized McGregor’s absence from fighting due to the birth of his son. He claimed he never stopped training when his children were born.

We shared a video going inside Conor McGregor’s UFC 229 training camp this week. Now it’s time to do the same for Khabib’s UFC 229 training camp.

The undefeated UFC lightweight champion is the most dominant force in mixed martial arts right now. Khabib has laid waste to most of his opposition, and the odds state he’ll do the same to McGregor when they finally do battle.

He could face his most dangerous test when he meets McGregor in the main event of next Saturday night’s (October 6, 2018) UFC 229 from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, nonetheless.

It’s definitely the biggest and most lucrative of his burgeoning fight career. There’s been little mainstream promotion for a fight of this magnitude it seems. But Khabib is focused on doing what he does best inside the cage no matter what.

Because of the hype involved, Khabib recently released a video with an inside look at his training camp at California’s American Kickboxing Academy. There, he continues to sharpen his peerless MMA wrestling skills with decorated UFC fighters like Luke Rockhold. Watch the first episode of his UFC 229 training camp focus right here:
