Kamaru Usman Interested In Potential GSP Fight For 170lb Goat Status

Kamaru Usman

Once again, Kamaru Usman has demonstrated why he is deserving of the 170lb title strap he wears around his waist. A clinical display of striking on Saturday night against Gilbert Burns, demonstrated how well rounded a martial artist he is. Having been victorious over Burns, there are now very few welterweights in the UFC that Usman has not yet defeated.

Usman initially called out Jorge Masvidal. Offering ‘Gamebred’ the chance for a rematch, this time with a full camp. However in the post-fight press conference, ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ raised the case for an even bigger opponent. This matchup being with Georges St-Pierre, the only man who could challenge Usman’s status as the greatest welterweight in the world. Usman had the following to say about GSP:

“I love George, I really do. I mean, one of the inspirations early when I started watching this sport but I’m a whole different animal nowadays. It’s a different ball game, I love George, I think George is tough, you know. I consider him one of the greatest but I fight with me and George, okay. George was massive with the jab but you saw what I did with jabs” (as transcribed by SportSkeeda).

GSP has been retired for some time now, and his last fight was at middleweight in 2017. He has not fought at welterweight since 2013 when he picked up a close decision victory over Johnny Hendricks. However, ‘Rush’ holds one of the most impressive resumes in UFC history, and is a constant contender for GOAT status. Despite this, UFC president Dana White has stated that he believes Usman will surpass GSP. One way to begin challenging GSP’s status would be to face him in the octagon. St-Pierre has previously expressed interest in fighting Khabib Nurmagomedov, so the idea of him returning to the sport is not unfathomable.

Do you believe we may see GSP face off against Kamaru Usman at some point in the future? Let us know in the comments.

Georges St-Pierre Believes Nick Diaz Can Still Be Champion

St-PierreFormer UFC Welterweight and Middleweight king Georges St-Pierre believes Nick Diaz still has what it takes to compete with the best and even be champion. In a recent interview with Marc Raimondi, ‘GSP’ stated that Diaz’s game is ‘very, very, very underrated’ and is one of the best. St-Pierre fought Diaz back in 2013 for […]

St-Pierre

Former UFC Welterweight and Middleweight king Georges St-Pierre believes Nick Diaz still has what it takes to compete with the best and even be champion. In a recent interview with Marc Raimondi, ‘GSP’ stated that Diaz’s game is ‘very, very, very underrated’ and is one of the best.

St-Pierre fought Diaz back in 2013 for the Welterweight title at UFC 158, where GSP earned a unanimous decision victory and retained his strap. Diaz is looking to return to the octagon for the first time in more than five years after a successful test cut and his old opponent suspects that Diaz can still compete at the highest level even after the lengthy layoff outside the octagon.

“I wish him the best, I love to see him fight,” St-Pierre stated. “I just wish and hope that he comes back as good or even better than he was. I believe he can be champion. He has a crazy style. He comes forward, and his game is very, very, very underrated. When you fight him, you feel the feeling of claustrophobic.”

“He’s playing with your mind. He’s very well-rounded. I think he can get up there and cause a lot of problems to a lot of guys.” St-Pierre also believes that Diaz should’ve fought former champion Tyron Woodley when he had the belt, “I always said it, I believe when Tyron Woodley was champion, he should have gone and fight Tyron. It would have been a great fight for the fans, and he would have had a chance to win because of the style.”

“Now, the champion is Kamaru Usman, who’s a different style of fighting. I don’t know how he’s going to match with that, but he should give it a shot before it’s too late, he’ll regret it. If he feels as sharp as he was or even better, he should do it.” (Transcribed by MMA Mania)

St-Pierre last stepped in the octagon at UFC 217 when he beat Michael Bisping to be the Middleweight champion, since then St-Pierre has retired but there are still rumours that a fight against Lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov might happen down the line.

Do you think Diaz can be champion if he comes back?

Florian: “I’ve Never Seen Anybody Train More Than Georges St-Pierre”

Kenny Florian recently talked about his time training with Georges St-Pierre and shared insight on the UFC Hall of Famer’s work ethic. In a new podcast documentary on St-Pierre by MMA TRUFAN, Florian talked about training with St-Pierre as a team member at Tristar Gym in Montreal. During that time he saw St-Pierre outwork virtually everybody in the sport.

“I trained an incredible amount. I could not sustain, and I’ve never seen anybody been able to sustain the volume of training that Georges St-Pierre was able to do. You could do it for a few days and you could do it for maybe a week. But, I can’t tell you how many people have tried to do that and have actually left or failed in that process of trying to keep up with Georges St-Pierre. And that’s not something that Georges does for a week and then stops. He’s doing that week in and week out.”

“Now I think there was certainly a lot of overtraining that Georges St-Pierre did. I’m not saying it was a perfect process. But I’ve never seen anybody train more than Georges St-Pierre.”

Florian on GOAT

Florian explained how St-Pierre still trains regularly even though he has been officially retired since February of 2019.  He also talked about where he thinks St-Pierre belongs on the list of the all-time greats in the sport.

“I’ve said this for a long time. Even when Anderson Silva was kind of touted as the GOAT, I always had Georges St-Pierre at the top of the list. Not only because of his consistency but also the quality of competition that he faced at the time. For me, that kind of consistency and also that kind of well-rounded martial arts skill is what stands out to me.”

When the greatest of all time (GOAT) conversation in mixed martial arts (MMA) arises, the same several names are always thrown out. Anderson Silva, Jon Jones, Fedor Emelianenko, and Georges St-Pierre.

However, one man who has had the rare opportunity to have either fought against or trained with all of those men is Chael Sonnen. Speaking on his podcast, “You’re Welcome,” recently, “The Bad Guy” offered his thoughts on the GOAT debate. For Sonnen, there’s only one answer. Georges St-Pierre.

“The greatest pound-for-pound fighter of all time – I do not think it’s too much of a discussion – is Georges St-Pierre. Georges St-Pierre has a few things on his side, aside from success and an overwhelming talent. Georges St-Pierre was the first and only guy to do three things. He beat all of the guys of the previous generation.

He beat all the guys of his generation, and then before he left he beat Johny Henricks who representing the carrying of the torch for the following generation. He beat three generations of guys. Then, when you’re talking pound-for-pound – all pound-for-pound means, from the guy who coined the phrase in 1965 in Brooklyn, New York, all that is to mean is who can go any weight class with his skills and win any weight class.

Whoever can do that is the pound-for-pound best. When Georges St-Pierre came back and changed weight classes and captured a world championship at yet another weight class – I believe that was the nail in the coffin of the argument. I would have made the argument, all the same. I’ve fought Fedor, Jon Jones, Anderson Silva, I’ve trained with Georges St. Pierre. I will tell you who the best fighter of those four is, it is Georges St-Pierre. I will tell you that for sure.

It’s hard to argue with St-Pierre as the GOAT. The Canadian has defeated the likes of BJ Penn, Matt Hughes, Matt Serra, Nick Diaz, Johny Hendricks, Thiago Alves, Carlos Condit, and so many more. He is also one of only a few fighters in history to have captured two titles in different weight classes – middleweight and welterweight.

What do you think about Sonnen calling St-Pierre the GOAT? Do you agree?
