Chael Sonnen suggests Herb Dean’s interference could be to blame for Jamahal Hill’s loss at UFC 300

Is Herb Dean to blame for Jamahal Hill’s loss to Alex Pereira?

Chael Sonnen seems to think so.

Closing out a spectacular night of fights at UFC 300, ‘Poatan’ successfully defended his light heavyweight title in the evening’s landmark main event, putting ‘Sweet Dreams’ to sleep with a booming left uppercut just past the three-minute mark.

While pundits have been focusing on Pereira’s knockout blow and his viral post-fight celebration, the three-time UFC title challenger noticed something nobody else has pointed out.

“I kept watching it and I finally saw something that I had never looked for,” Sonnen said on his YouTube channel. “I watched Herb Dean, then I looked back and I watched Alex, but what I never looked for is what Jamahal did. Have you? Because Pereira holds and hand up and even says something to Herb. ‘Stay back, I’m good.’

“That was great communication. Herb was going to break the action to check on him. Everybody is doing what they’re supposed to be, but Jamahal stops. Not 100%. I’m not saying he put it in park and got out, but he stops. He stopped doing what he was doing and started doing something else.”

Alex Pereira calls off Herb Dean at UFC 300

“You’ve never seen a referee step in and a fighter tell him to get back,” Sonnen continued. “If the ref comes in after you know you just kicked the guy low, you’re going to have a break in the action. So, Jamahal begins that break in the action, when Herb gets notified and makes the decision that he’s going to get out of [the way]. …As [Jamahal] turns his head, Alex took the angle. This has never been spoke of.”

Jamahal Hills calls for a fight with jiri prochazka

Issuing his first statement following the loss, Jamahal Hill offered no excuses for the loss.

“Oh well, that’s the game we play,” Hill said in a video on social media. “Got caught. For anybody that cares, I’m good. I’m well.”

Looking to jump right back into the fire, ‘Sweet Dreams’ called for a clash with former 205-pound champ Jiri Prochazka.

“I dared to be great against adversity and against a great challenge and came up short at the highest level in the world!!!” Hill later wrote on X. “I answered the call twice on short notice to fight for a championship that most will never fight for!!! On to the next, [Ji?í Procházka let’s] make it happen!!”

Competing in the featured prelim of UFC 300, Prochazka put away Aleksandar Rakic emphatically, re-establishing himself as one of the light heavyweight division’s top contenders.

Herb Dean on Fence Grab Fouls After Chael Sonnen Accuses Leon Edwards of Cheating His Way to UFC Title

Herb Dean

At Fight Academy in Pasadena, tenured UFC referee Herb Dean spoke to Helen Yee Sports about UFC 278 in Salt Lake City.

In the main event of the evening, Leon Edwards scored a spectacular head-kick knockout of former welterweight champion Kamaru Usman to capture UFC gold with less than a minute remaining in the fight. While most of the world has been celebrating Edwards’ historic victory, some are bringing attention to an overlooked detail. Specifically, multiple fence grabs by ‘Rocky’ during the world title clash. Calling out the new world champion for his illegal tactics was former UFC title challenger Chael Sonnen. Herb Dean was serving as the referee for the headlining bout.

“Leon was frustrated in positions and had no way out of positions to the extent that he cheated repeatedly, not once, not an accident, not the ref didn’t see it… the ref broke the act five or six times…”

Herb Dean, who made his UFC refereeing debut at UFC 47 in 2004, spoke with Helen Yee about fence grabs and why fighters are rarely penalized for them, even after multiple warnings.

“Fence grabs are a very difficult thing to deal with in the sport because it’s a natural reaction. It’s going to happen, but to deduct a point… So let’s take a look at what a point deduction means in the sport. What does a point deduction mean? What’s the most common score that goes to the card? 29-28. So that means we have a one-point sport. For a majority of fights that happen, that go to the cards, 29-28 is the most common score.

So when you take a point, that means you’ve taken a win. It’s not like in other sports where you have 12 rounds and you take a point. It’s a much stiffer punishment and the majority of fights that happen, when you’ve taken a point, you’ve taken a win. To have that balance there, that point, that grab needs to significantly affect the fight and it doesn’t always have to happen right away. Those things are judgment calls of the referee. You’re gonna say, ‘Ok, how many times has this happened? Is there other fouls?’ Or hey, even this one time this guy has spent a lot of energy and I can’t rebuild the position in any other way and so I’m gonna choose not to give a warning at this time or take a point.

Herb Dean Stresses That Not All Fouls Are Equal

Continuing his conversation with Helen Yee, Herb Dean spoke about the importance of rebuilding positions in the event of an especially egregious fence grab that has resulted in someone gaining a superior position. Herb Dean also said that not all fouls are equal with some considered to be harmful (low blow, eye poke) while others, such as fence grabs, are considered non-harmful.

“Those are really difficult situations. What’s best is to try to rebuild the position if you can. We want to take a point if there’s… We want to try to rebuild positions as much as we can and some situations are easier. If it’s a takedown, you can’t predict where that person would have landed, but if someone gets a superior position, at least you can take away the superior position.

“Some fouls or not all fouls are equal. So, some fouls are considered harmful fouls. Some fouls are non-harmful so those things need to be considered also.”

Herb Dean’s explanation of the refereeing process certainly makes sense. However, what seems to frustrate MMA fans is the lack of consistency in refereeing. One referee may let a foul go with little warning whereas another will quickly offer a stern warning, even taking a point straight away.

UFC referee Herb Dean appears to have been filming a video for Cameo during the controversial finish of Mayra Bueno Silva vs. Stephanie Egger on Saturday night.

UFC Vegas 59 opened in a rather bizarre fashion with the women’s bantamweight bout. At the 1:17 mark, Silva appeared to have an arm bar locked in on Egger and then suddenly let the hold go. Silva argued that Egger had tapped out, but there was no indication of a tap and referee Chris Tognoni clearly did not see it. Despite this, Tognoni called a stop to the action, took Silva’s word for it, and immediately called for a review via instant replay. With the two fighters pressed up against the fence, there was no angle that clearly showed a tap by Egger leaving it to the cage side judges to decide.

Sitting cage side for the contest was tenured referee Herb Dean, but instead of watching the contest, Dean was busy filming a video for Cameo, a popular video-sharing site that allows celebrities to charge money for personalized messages to fans. As Dean speaks on camera, he pans to the Octagon where we can clearly see Silva and Egger in the middle of the evening’s opening contest.

This is Not the First Time UFC Referee Herb Dean Has Been Criticized While on the Job

Tenured UFC referee Herb Dean is regularly a topic of discussion amongst MMA fans. Over recent years, the UFC referee who made his promotional debut at UFC 47 almost 20 years ago, has been accused of being indecisive. Even UFC President Dana White commented on Dean’s indecisiveness following UFC Vegas 42’s co-main event between Ben Rothwell and Marcos Rogerio de Lima. As Rothwell was dropped in the opening minute of the fight, Dean instinctively grabbed de Lima by the waist, signifying that he was stopping the fight, but then appeared to let Rothwell go for a takedown. Dean officially called for the stoppage only when de Lima threw his hands up in utter confusion as to what Dean was doing.

“Herb needs to stop touching guys unless the fight is over. He goes in and grabs them by the waist and then decides ‘Oops, maybe I’m..’. The good thing about this one was; that fight should have been stopped when he stopped it. You didn’t see Ben jumping up and arguing about it. He’s got to pull the trigger and stop touching guys. Don’t touch em unless you’re going to stop the fight… I like him personally, he’s a nice guy but he’s got to stop touching people until he’s ready to stop the fight.”

As for the debacle between Silva and Egger, it’s unclear if Dean has any influence on the decision. Michael Bisping can be heard saying Dean’s name, indicating the referee was involved in the conversation, but it was UFC referee Mark Smith who was working instant replay for the contest.

Alexander Volkov

Alexander Volkov scored an impressive first-round TKO against Jairzinho Rozenstruik at UFC Vegas 56 on Saturday, but the win did not come without a little bit of controversy.

Around the two-minute mark of the first round, ‘Drago’ landed a big right that stunned ‘Bigi Boy,’ wobbling the man from Suriname. Volkov unloaded multiple strikes as Rozenstruik began to cover up, looking for a way out of the danger. As Volkov continued to lay on the strikes, Rozenstruik dropped to one knee, prompting referee Herb Dean to step in and stop the bout. Rozenstruik immediately protested the stoppage.

While discussing the fight during the UFC Vegas 56 post-fight press conference, Volkov defended the stoppage believing that had it continued, Rozenstruik would have absorbed more unnecessary punishment.

“In the moment, I hit him, he was a little bit knocked out so he wasn’t being fully fresh,” said Volkov. “Anyway, it was a big opportunity to knock him out, to land because he was almost on the mat. I was ready to throw him down and continue my work.”

After the stoppage, the MMA community immediately began to question Herb Dean’s call. This is far from the first time Dean has been criticized for his decision-making in the Octagon. Dean has often been accused of being indecisive during a potential fight-ending sequence, but Volkov was quick to remind fans that he has no control over the referee’s actions.

“[Rozenstruik] was in a bad position,” Volkov said. “The referee stopped the fight. He was in a bad position and he took some hard punches and he was a little bit knocked out. It’s not my fault but ask this of the referee, not me. I just did my job.”

Alexander Volkov is Back in The Win Column After UFC Vegas 56 Victory

Regardless of anyone’s opinion on the stoppage, the win puts Volkov back into the win column after a disappointing performance against Tom Aspinall at UFC London in March.

“I’m really happy to come back on a win streak,” Volkov said. “I’m happy to come back with a win. I’m just happy. I did all the plan I had in this fight. Everything went perfect. Nothing went wrong. Everything’s good.”

Intent on working his way to a UFC heavyweight title opportunity, Volkov discussed what may come next. A potential rematch with heavyweight gatekeeper Derrick Lewis is a possibility according to ‘Drago’, but another crack at Ciryl Gane seems to be what the Russian-born fighter is looking for.

“It doesn’t matter for me about revenge or winning other fights,” Volkov explained. “I’m ready for any challenge. Any challenge would be good but maybe I want to rematch with [Ciryl] Gane because this fight was close. With Derrick Lewis, I won all the rounds and then I just took this punch. It was good for him. He was good with his punch, but anyway, I don’t feel this is a big problem for me.

“For me, I like more challenges, and right now, for me, I think that rematch with Gane because I respect him very much, about his stand-up work, about everything, it’s very interesting for me to meet him again. I’m ready for any challenge against any fighters, any time.”
