After shocking the world last November by dethroning longtime women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey, Holly Holm looked to make the first defense of her title last March against Miesha Tate at UFC 196. Unfortunately, she was unsuccessful in doing so as she ended up getting choked out in the final round of the fight.

Looking back on that fight, “The Preacher’s Daughter” admits that could have shown more in that contest:

“I wish I would have gone a little harder,” Holm said at a media lunch this week (Via MMAFighting.com). “Because I know I’m capable of more than I showed in the fight. But a lot of times you can do something and get into a bad situation even sooner. Who knows?”

Holm was likely winning the fight prior to finding herself on the wrong end of a tight rear-naked-choke, but she gives all of the credit to Tate, who Holm says has had her moments against the division’s elite:

“If you look at Miesha before we fought, she had run through all the top girls,” Holm said. “She was outwrestling wrestlers. She dropped Jessica Eye with an overhand. She’s had her moments against some of the toughest.”

Since then, Tate has lost her title, as she was absolutely steamrolled by Amanda Nunes in the main event of July 9’s landmark UFC 200 event from Las Vegas, Nevada. Holm, on the other hand, will look to get back on track tonight (July 23, 2016) in the main event of UFC on FOX 20 against Valentina Shevchenko. A title shot could be on the line, but Holm also has her eyes set on revenge:

“I want to avenge a loss,” Holm said. “No matter what — whether she had the belt or not — I still would hate the fact that I lost the fight. Whether it would have been for the belt or not. I want to win no matter what. It doesn’t matter if it’s for the belt or not. So yeah, it’s a sour taste in my mouth, just the loss in itself. Belt or no belt, it would still bother me either way.”

Holly Holm Reveals Why She Turned Down “Cyborg” Fight

Former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Holly Holm is slated to meet No. 9-ranked Valentina Shevchenko in the main event of July 23’s UFC on FOX 20 from Chicago. Former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Holly Holm is slated to meet No. 9-ranked Valentina Shevchenko in the main event of July 23’s UFC on FOX 20 from Chicago.

This will be Holm’s first performance since surrendering her title in a submission loss to Miesha Tate last March. “The Preacher’s Daughter” was hoping to receive an immediate rematch with Tate, but “Cupcake” will instead face off with Amanda Nunes at July 9’s UFC 200.

Many were surprised when Holm was booked against Shevchenko, and it appears as if she was actually offered another high profile fight: a catch weight bout with Invicta FC featherweight champion Cris “Cyborg” Justino.

Justino recently destroyed Leslie Smith at UFC 198 in her Octagon debut, but a bout between herself and Holm would’ve been massive.

Recently speaking on the matter, Holm admitted that she turned down the bout with “Cyborg” simply because she was hoping to land the rematch with Tate. The former champion also very clearly stated that she’d be willing to fight Justino at any weight:

“I’m not even stuck on the 135 compared to 140, that’s not really a big thing for me. They did call me for the fight, that is definitely true. I was so focused and I really wanted to see if I was going to get that rematch for the belt because that is where my passion was really facing. And that was around the time they asked me for the fight with Cyborg and I was holding out to see if I could get the rematch. To me, I am not against fighting Cyborg, it just didn’t really seem like the right time. In boxing, I fought in three weight classes, so I am not opposed to fighting at 140. I actually think Cyborg might make 135, who knows. But that could be an option for the future. I am actually very happy for her victory. I really like Cyborg, I think she’s a great gal.” Holm told 120 Sports.

Newly crowned UFC women’s bantamweight champion Miesha “Cupcake” Tate recently signed a new contract with the promotion, and it seems as if she has her first title defense set as well.

The reigning queen appeared on tonight’s (April 6, 2016) edition of UFC tonight to announce that she would be putting her strap on the line against No. 4-ranked surging contender Amanda “The Lioness” Nunes at July 9’s blockbuster UFC 200 from the brand new T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Since dropping a second loss to previous dominant champion Ronda Rousey back in 2013, Tate has run a demolition course through the division.

The former Strikeforce title holder has picked up five straight victories, capped off by an emphatic fifth round submission win over former champion Holly Holm last month (March 5, 2016) at UFC 196 to secure the title.

Nunes, on the other hand, is riding a three fight win streak, including two finishes. After scoring back to back stoppages over the likes of Shayna Baszler and Sara McMann, “The Lioness” picked up a decision victory over Valentina Schevchenko also at March 5’s UFC 196.

This bout may come as a surprise to many, as lucrative bouts between Tate and Holm, and Tate and Rousey loom over the horizon, but Nunes remains an interesting challenge nonetheless.

UFC 200 is set to be headlined by a highly anticipated rematch between Nate Diaz and reigning featherweight champion the “Notorious” Conor McGregor.

Former 145-pound kingpin Jose Aldo will also rematch former lightweight boss Frankie Edgar for the interim featherweight strap.

Is the upcoming mega event shaping up as you thought it would?

Holly Holm Responds To Dana White: I Wanted To Fight, Not My Manager

After Holly Holm’s submission loss to Miesha Tate earlier this month (March 5, 2016) at UFC 196, UFC President Dana White criticized Holm’s camp, saying that her manager influenced her to take the risky bout with Tate rather than wait for the lucrative rematch with Ronda Rousey, who Holm shockingly knocked out last November.

Finally responding to White today (March 21, 2016), however, “The Preacher’s Daughter” confirmed that White’s comments are false, noting that she wasn’t fond of waiting for Rousey’s expected, but unconfirmed return:

“All that is false,” Holm said during an interview on The MMA Hour. “I’ve always said I wanted to fight and there still has been no for sure time that Ronda’s going to be back. So they said there’s all this money coming in for that fight, but what if that fight doesn’t even happen? Then what are you waiting for? Nothing.

“You only make money off that fight if it’s actually going to happen, and I don’t know what’s going to happen. Number one, I don’t fight for money. I only fight because I’m passionate about it, and so if we didn’t know if she’d be back right away, we thought well, let’s get another fight going.”

As far as whether or not her team had influenced her to accept a bout with “Cupcake”, Holm said that it essentially came down to her, and she wanted to fight:

“That was me,” Holm told Ariel Helwani. “I definitely said I wanted another fight. I said I wanted to fight sooner rather than later. So, 100 percent, that was me, that was my decision. They’ve never ever made me take a fight without my blessing. Nobody in my camp has ever told me to do something one way or the other, it doesn’t matter. That’s something I said I wanted to do, I wanted to fight.”

According to Holm, her manager, Lenny Fresquez, has always supported her. In the end, the now former champion was quite irritated by the criticism, once again noting that she personally asked for the fight, and she got what she wanted:

“Yeah, [Lenny]’s been nothing but supportive for me and my career,” she said. “He only looks out for my best interests, so it’s frustrating when people kind of put down the things that he’s worked so hard for. I said I wanted this fight. I did. I said I wanted it. That’s the bottom line.

“For me, I don’t really care what people say about me,” Holm said. “But I do care when people are negative about the people around who I love and support me. So yeah, it’s frustrating, because it was something that I wanted and it’s something I wanted and it’s something that [Fresquez] pushed for. He said, ‘Holly wants to fight.’ That wasn’t him saying that, that was me. He was speaking on my behalf. So I don’t like when people think that he’s pushing me to do things against my will. That was my wish, and what I wanted.”

Do you respect Holm’s willingness to take on the best in the world, or would it have been smarter for her to wait for the potentially massive Rousey rematch?

Despite having to deal with a last minute switch up in the main event, the UFC has once again released its usual Countdown show ahead of this weekend’s (March 5, 2016) UFC 196 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Headlining the blockbuster card will be a welterweight clash between reigning featherweight champion the “Notorious” Conor McGregor and outspoken bad boy Nate Diaz.

McGregor was originally scheduled to move up in weight to challenge Rafael dos Anjos for the lightweight strap, but the 155-pound champion was forced out of the bout with a broken foot.

The Irishman has won all seven of his UFC bouts including six finishes. He is also coming off of a spectacular 13-second knockout of former long-time 145-pound title holder Jose Aldo.

Diaz recently returned from nearly a year long layoff, scoring an impressive decision victory over Michael Johnson last December.

That’s not all for the card, however, as newly minted bantamweight ruler Holly “The Preacher’s Daughter” Holm will defend her title for the very first time against former Strikeforce title holder Miesha “Cupcake” Tate in the co-main event.

Holm is coming off of a massive upset victory over former champion Ronda Rousey last November, a breath taking finish that not many saw coming.

Tate, on the other hand, has compiled a four fight win streak since losing to Rousey for a second time in 2013.

Take a deeper look into the preparations of these four fighters with full Countdown video below courtesy of the UFC:
