Kayla Harrison vows to land vicious win in debut at UFC 300 they'll have choice but to give me a title shot

Ahead of her Octagon debut next month in a potential title-eliminator against former bantamweight champion, Holly Holm, Kayla Harrison has vowed to put on such a vicious beating on the Albuquerque veteran at UFC 300, that the promotion will be left with no option to hand her a shot at gold.

Harrison, a two-time Olympic gold medal winner and a two-time lightweight tournament victor under the banner of the PFL (Professional Fighters League) – made her long-anticipated move to the UFC late last year, booking a promotional bow with the returning ex-gold holder, Holm.

And opening as both a significant betting favorite to beat the boxing Hall of Fame inductee next month in Las Vegas, and stunningly, to hold the bantamweight title by the end of this year, Harrison most recently turned in a decision win over Octagon-alum, Aspen Ladd back in November of last year in Washington.

Plotting a championship charge against newly-minted gold holder, Raquel Pennington off the back of The Ultimate Fighter veteran’s shutout win over Mayra Bueno Silva back in January, Harrison was promptly urged her hold her proverbial horses.

Kayla Harrison plans title fight after UFC 300 debut

However, speaking during a Q&A session today ahead of UFC 299 this weekend in Miami, Florida, American Top Team staple, Harrison vowed to leave herself irresistible to a title charge – with a dominant win over storied contender, Holm next month at UFC 300.

“I plan on putting on such a beating that they [the UFC] have no choice but to give me a title shot after that,” Kayla Harrison told assembled media and fans during today’s Q&A ahead of UFC 300

Slated to make bantamweight waters for the first time in her storied and already-illustrious mixed martial arts career, 33-year-old Ohio native was backed to comfortably make 135 pounds by promotional CEO, Dana White ahead of the event next month.

Urging fans and pundits to remain calm regarding her impending weight cut to bantamweight for the first time in her career, Harrison claimed there was a strange idea floating around regarding her apparent stature – in the region of 180 pounds.

“There’s a misconception out there that I walk around at 180 pounds or something,” Kayla Harrison said. “I have walked around most of my MMA career at 165 [pounds], 160 [pounds]. I don’t like cutting weight. I don’t believe in cutting weight. I don’t think it sends the right message to kids. That being said, I don’t agree with this but sometimes you have to show up and do things you don’t agree with in order to make your dreams come true.”

Kayla Harrison odds released on future bantamweight title win ahead of UFC 300 by end of 2024

“The whole time I was [in the PFL], I walked around at 165, maybe 160 and so not only was I usually the smaller fighter with less experience,” Kayla Harrison explained. “I was getting in the cage with girls who were getting in there at 180 [pounds], 175 pounds. Now, that’s not going to be the case.”

Drafting a long-time foe of Harrison into her camp for UFC 300, Holm has brought former opponent and dominant current Bellator MMA featherweight queen, and former UFC champion, Cris Cyborg to New Mexico to help her prepare for her comeback.

Bellator MMA featherweight champion, Cris Cyborg has confirmed she is set to train former undisputed bantamweight titleholder, Holly Holm for her upcoming UFC 300 fight with former PFL champion, Kayla Harrison in April – rekindling her rivalry with the Ohio native.

Cyborg, a former undisputed UFC featherweight queen, has been sidelined since she featured at Bellator 300 back in November, successfully defending her featherweight crown in a one-sided first round knockout win over fellow Octagon veteran, Cat Zingano.

And struggling to book a fight with either the PFL or Bellator since the Peter Murray-led promotion bought out the latter, Cyborg has announced plans to make another boxing appearance in her time away from mixed martial arts.

Furthermore, staking her claim for a potential UFC comeback in a rematch with Brazilian compatriot, Amanda Nunes in April, Cyborg revealed she is set to travel to Albuquerque to train Holm for her UFC 300 clash against Harrison later this quarter.

“I already have a date to go to Albuquerque – I’m very excited,” Cris Cyborg told James Lynch during a recent interview. “I talked to the team, talked to Holly (Holm) – we’ve been studying Kayla (Harrison) for a little while already. I have been training for her already.”

“I’m a super fan of Holly Holm,” Cris Cyborg continued. “I think she’s a legend. She’s a big example to female fighters. [I’ll] be a part of her camp, and I think she’s going to come with a great victory. It’s going to be good.”

Herself fighting Holm back in 2017, Cyborg headlined UFC 219 against the boxing Hall of Famer, landing a unanimous decision win to successfully defend her undisputed featherweight championship.

Remaining sceptical of Harrison’s ability to successfully make the bantamweight limit for her UFC 300 debut inside the Octagon, Holm claimed she would likely skirt a fight with the two-time Olympic gold medalist if she failed to successfully tip the scales

Holly Holm welcomes rematch with Amanda Nunes in UFC return I have respect for her

Former undisputed bantamweight champion, Holly Holm may be pre-occupied with a pivotal clash against the debuting, Kayla Harrison at UFC 300 in April, however, the Albuquerque native claims she would be more than willing to welcome prior-foe, Amanda Nunes back to the Octagon in a rematch if the Brazilian makes good on a rumored comeback.

Holm, the current number five ranked bantamweight contender, is slated to make her return to the Octagon at UFC 300 in April, taking on former two-time PFL lightweight tournament victor and two-time Olympic gold medalist, Harrison in the latter’s first venture to the Octagon.

Sidelined since she headlined a UFC Apex facility card against recent vacant title chaser, Mayra Bueno Silva, former champion, Holm saw an initial ninja choke submission loss to the Brazilian overturned to an official ‘No Contest’ after the former tested positive for ritalinic acid.

And ahead of her massive bantamweight fight with Harrison at UFC 300 – which Holm insisted must take place at that weight limit, the boxing Hall of Fame inductee claimed she would be interested in fighting Bahia veteran, Nunes, if she makes good on a return to the Octagon – which she hinted at last month.

“[Amanda] Nunes [may come back to the UFC],” Holly Holm told MMA Fighting. “That was even one of the things I thought when they [the UFC] were like, ‘We’ve got a fight for you, trust me, we’ve just got to see. I wonder if it would be like she’d have to at least have one fight before [she earned a title fight] if she came back and at one point, my coach and I were like, ‘No, probably not.’”

“I didn’t think anything and then it was like, ‘Did you see something about Nunes maybe coming back?’ I thought about it too, but I don’t know,” Holly Holm explained. “I do think that she’s enjoying time off. She was pretty active in being a double champion and all that. I have all the respect for her in this sport. Another fighter that’s fought the top girls. You really can’t take anything away from Amanda.”

Holly Holm shuts down fight with Kayla Harrison at UFC 300 if she misses weight

Former undisputed bantamweight champion, Holly Holm has shot down the possibility of fighting incoming debutante, Kayla Harrison, if the Ohio native fails to make the bantamweight limit successfully in her upcoming bow at UFC 300 in April.

Holm, the second undisputed bantamweight champion in the history of the promotion, and the inaugural featherweight title chaser, has been sidelined since she headlined an August event at the UFC Apex facility against recent title challenger, Mayra Bueno Silva, in an eventual official ‘No Contest’.

As for Harrison, the high-profile Octagon acquisition is slated to make her long-anticipated debut in the promotion at UFC 300 – boasting a 16-1 professional record, as well as two separate summer Olympic Games gold medal wins in Judo, and a pair of PFL lightweight tournament victories since her move to the sport.

And despite opening as a significant betting favorite to beat Holm in her landing at UFC 300, Harrison has been the subject of speculation regarding her ability to successful cut to the 136lbs non-title limit for the first time since her mixed martial arts career began.

Holly Holm urges Kayla Harrison to make weight at UFC 300

Promotional CEO, Dana White has claimed recently how the American Top Team staple has successfully made multiple test weight cuts to the bantamweight limit ahead of her move, however, as far as Holm is concerned, there will be no fight against Kayla Harrison in April if the latter fails to tip the scales successfully.

“I’m on the stance that you need to make weight, that’s just how it is,” Holly Holm told MMA Fighting. “I think that her (Kayla Harrison) mindset should be on, ‘I’m going to make weight,’ because she took the fight at 135 [pounds]. So, I think it’s simple. I don’t think it should be super detailed.”

“You think about that fight with ‘Wonderboy’ [and Michel Pereira],” Holly Holm continued. “His opponent came in three pounds over and people were like, ‘Oh, it’s only three rounds.’ And he’s like, ‘Yeah, if it’s only three pounds, then go lose the three pounds.’ You know what I mean? There’s two ways to look at it. It’s only this or it’s only that. You can look at it from a lot of different antles, but as a professional, find out how to make weight. I work hard to make my weight, so I expect the same.”

If it’s not for a world title, Holly Holm has no interest in fighting.

The former women’s bantamweight champion will return to the Octagon on April 13 to welcome the promotion’s latest blockbuster signing, Kayla Harrison. Given Harrison’s history as a two-time PFL champion and being one of the most popular female mixed martial artists on the planet, she will likely earn herself a shot at UFC gold should she come out on top against ‘The Preacher’s Daughter’ in her highly anticipated debut.

Appearing on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, Holm expects that to work both ways, noting that if a win over Harrison doesn’t get her closer to a bantamweight title opportunity, what’s the point?

“I’ve fought for the belt more than once,” Holm said. “They want to see other people fight for the belt, but you’ve also gotta put people in line that deserve to be there and there’s a reason why I have been up there. I’ve stayed ranked in the top five for a really long time so my goal was always to get to the belt. If I’m not fighting for the belt, I don’t want to be fighting at all.

“If I don’t have some kind of path to the belt, I really don’t want to do it. I’m not just fighting for a payday. I’m not just fighting for fun. I have a goal in mind and that’s always it.”

After earning back-to-back wins against Raquel Pennington and Marion Reneau, Holly Holm shocked the world at UFC 193 with a shocking second-round knockout of Ronda Rousey to claim the 135-pound crown. She lost the title four months later, succumbing to a rear-naked choke in her defense against Miesha Tate.

Holm has had three championship fight opportunities since then, two at featherweight and one at bantamweight. She came up short in each.

As for Kayla Harrison, the two-time Olympic gold medalist has established herself as one of WMMA’s most dominant fighters. Since making her professional debut in 2018, she has amassed a 16-1 record and won back-to-back lightweight titles under the PFL banner. She earned a decision victory over former UFC standout Aspen Ladd in November. Two months later, Dana White announced that Harrison had signed with the promotion and would make her first appearance at UFC 300.

Kayla Harrison backed to make 135 pounds in UFC 300 debut she made it a couple of times

Former two-time PFL (Professional Fighters League) lightweight tournament victor, Kayla Harrison will have no struggle making the 135 pound limit for the first time in her fighting career, according to Dana White, with the CEO confident of the Ohio native’s ability to hit the mark inaugurally at UFC 300 in April.

Harrison, a former two-time lightweight tournament victor under the Peter Murray-led PFL banner, also struck gold twice in separate summer Olympic Games, partaking in Judo.

And forever linked with a potential move to the Octagon since transitioning to mixed martial arts back in 2018, Harrison had been linked with a super fight of sorts against former two-division gold holder, Amanda Nunes prior to the Brazilian’s retirement in June of last year.

Booked to finally make good on that move, Harrison, 33, will take on former undisputed bantamweight champion, Holly Holm at UFC 300 in April – in a potential title-eliminator.

And widely backed as a betting favorite to beat the Albuquerque veteran in her Octagon landing, fans have questioned Harrison’s ability to make a drastic cut to 135 pounds in order to compete in the bantamweight division – amid a fleeting and featherweight class likely on borrowed time – if not un-officially axed.

As far as the aforenoted, White is concerned, however, fans should be rest assured of Harrison’s ability to make the bantamweight limit – following several successful test-cuts.

“She’s (Kayla Harrison) already made 135 [pounds] a couple of times,” Dana White siad during an Instagram Live session this week.

In her most recent outing, Harrison, who boasts an impressive 16-1 professional record, landed a decision win over former UFC bantamweight contender, Aspen Ladd at PFL 10 back in November of last year in Washington.
