Former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey’s Octagon return may be a little later than we expected.

In a recent interview with ESPN (via MMAFighting.com) UFC President Dana White revealed that ‘Rowdy’ actually underwent a minor knee surgery yesterday:

“Ronda Rousey, I don’t know,” White said. “I’m hoping we’re going to get Ronda back this year. She actually just had surgery yesterday on her knee.

Nothing serious, just get in there, scope it and clean it out a little bit. She feels great. Her spirits are great. She’s been training.”

When asked of a possible return date for the former 135-pound queen, White named December or January as possible target dates:

“If she fights, I’m hoping she fights in December. If not, then she would probably fight at the New Years show at the beginning of the year,” White noted.

White also stated that upon her return, Rousey will be granted an immediate title bout regardless of the title-holder. The UFC President also named Holly Holm as a possible return bout for the former champ:

If Miehsa Tate’s still the champion, she’ll fight Miesha Tate. Whoever has the belt is who Ronda Rousey will fight.”

“Injuries happen in this sport and a fight is made. Somebody falls out and somebody else slides in,” he explained.

“I’m not even saying Holly Holm couldn’t be the champion by the time Ronda comes back. So, whoever holds that belt when Ronda’s ready.”

Rousey was initially rumored to be ready to make her Octagon return at the UFC’s inaugural Madison Square Garden event in November. It appears, however, that is no longer the case due to Rousey’s recent knee operation.

Fight fans must start beginning to wonder if we will ever see ‘Rowdy’ compete inside the Octagon again…

It’s time for Ronda to get a boxing coach…

Former UFC women’s bantamweight champion suffered the first loss of her professional career at UFC 193. After years of dominating the division as the first and only belt holder until meeting Holly Holm, ‘Rowdy’ entered the Melbourne pay-per-view as a massive betting favorite. As is quite often the case when the hopes of not only a lot of fans, but also the promotion itself is invested in a single fighter, things went south when Rousey fought Holm down under.

The head kick heard around the world still reverberates to this day, as ‘The Preacher’s Daughter’ overcame the odds and Rousey’s Judo game to land a crushing knockout win.

A loss is a loss in mixed martial arts, they are seldom avoided, and most fighters take them as learning experiences, regardless of how brutal and depressing they may seem at the time. But the case of Rousey’s loss to Holm had a few differences. After entering a deep stage of reclusion, Rousey would emerge in 2016 to reveal she’d considered suicide after her first loss.

She openly admitted she’d somewhat bought in to her own hype, and that the defeat made her feel worthless and lost. It also didn’t help that a torrent of memes and video edits flooded the MMA forums, mocking Rousey at her lowest moment.

But now we’ve started to hear news of Rousey getting back to training again. But has she got a new boxing coach? She received heavy criticism even before the Holm loss about her lack of boxing fundamentals. They were heavily exposed at UFC 193, so surely if a return is planned it’s time to sharpen the edges in her stand up game, right?

Pavel Fedotov, trainer of UFC fighter Valentina Shevchenko, who is scheduled to be Holly Holm’s next opponent at the UFC On FOX 20 event in Chicago, Illinois in July, was shot and taken to the emergency room after a shootout at a restaurant in the Chorrilos district of Lima, Peru. Shevchenko was also there at the time of the shooting.

Three armed robbers allegedly entered the restaurant on Sunday evening, stealing approximately $1,486 from the cash register, as well as cellphones, wallets and other belongings that the customers in the establishment had on them at the time. The three also assaulted anyone who resisted in the robbery, splitting open the heads of three customers, according to a local report in Peru by media outlet, El Comercio.

The robbery and shooting of Fedotov was caught on camera, and Shevchenko can be seen running to his aid after the shooting ceased. You can watch the footage at ElComercio.pe.

Shevchenko is still currently scheduled to fight former UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Holm in the main event of the UFC On FOX 20 event at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois on July 23, 2016.

Former UFC bantamweight champion “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey is without question one of the sport’s biggest stars despite falling on rough times recently.

The “Rowdy” one has been out of action since surrendering her title in brutal fashion to Holly Holm at November 2015’s UFC 193 from Melbourne, Australia.

Aside from her loss, Rousey led a very successful event at UFC 193 which took place at the massive 50,000 plus seat Etihad Stadium. The show was monumental to say the least, but that doesn’t mean that every Australian was too fond of the action.

In fact, one certain Australian reporter had some very harsh comments regarding the card, bashing not only Rousey, but the ‘bloodbath’ that is the UFC as well.

Check out what Susie O’Brien of Melbourne’s Herald Sun had to say below:

“Ronda, we don’t need to encourage people to pay good money to watch you get battered into oblivion, or to watch you do the same to your opponent.

My colleague, Ron Reed, who went to the Holm v Rousey fight last year, said the crowd was roaring things like “cut off his f—— head” and “I want to see blood”.

I don’t think UFC is entertainment and it shouldn’t be served up as such in any Australian city. It’s nothing more than a dangerous form of sadistic voyeurism that feeds off the injuries sustained by others.

This is not sport. It’s a bloodbath that glorifies violence.”

Well, O’Brien sure wasn’t holding back with those statements.

As for Rousey, the ex-champion has yet to return since being knocked out by Holm, but there have been rumors of her making her highly-anticipated comeback at November 12’s UFC 205 from Madison Square Garden in New York.

What do you make of these comments regarding Rousey and the sport as a whole?

Julianna Pena Willing To Fight Good Friend Miesha Tate For Title

The UFC women’s bantamweight title picture may be a bit messy due to the uncertain return of former champion Ronda Rousey, but current champion Miesha Tate will still defend her championship against Amanda Nunes on the main card of UFC 200 directly after quickly rising Julianna Pena faces off against Cat Zingano in the featured preliminary card bout.

The winner of three straight bouts capped off by a dominant decision win over Jessica Eye at last year’s UFC 192, the No. 5 Pena is now looking to burst into the upper echelon of women’s MMA by defeating former title contender Zingano, who’s been out of action for almost 15 months following her 14-second loss to Rousey at 2015’s UFC 184. If and when she does, Pena told FOX Sports she believes it should earn her a title shot:

“I definitely think so. I beat everybody that they put in front of me, from all those girls on “The Ultimate Fighter” to everybody they’ve put in front of me since. No one else has been on that big of a win streak besides Ronda (Rousey) and I think that I definitely have earned getting a title shot.”

While that could be the case, realistically there’s more of a chance for Rousey to get the next title shot when she decides to return, and if she doesn’t, No. 1-ranked Holly Holm, who infamously beat Rousey and recently lost her belt to Tate via fifth-round submission, will face Valentina Shevchenko at July’s UFC on FOX 20 from Chicago, where a win could see her vaulted back into her desired title rematch.

But Pena is still considered an eventual title contender at 135 pounds regardless, so “The Venezuelan Vixen” has already begun discussing a potential fight with her good friend and former TUF 18 coach Tate, and it’s a fight they’ll apparently both accept:

“Me and Miesha have discussed fighting each other. We said the only way we would fight each other is if her or I had the belt,” Pena said. “Now that she has the belt and I get my hand raised be it July 9, I will ask for a title shot. I only think that that’s right.

“I’m sure she will accept, be it that she wins, which I’m sure she will.”

It sounds a good plan, and four straight wins would be tough to deny. The shadow of Rousey and Holm will always loom large, however, so Pena will have to defeat Zingano very impressively to leapfrog the gargantuan contenders currently ahead of her on the 135-pound order.

With Rousey and Holm’s results and plans unknown, that may just be a distant possibility for the near future.

Although the story going around some MMA circles is that Holly Holm turned down a fight against Cris Cyborg at UFC 198 in Curitiba, Brazil this past weekend, “The Preacher’s Daughter” is claiming that is not the case.

Holm spoke with Dave Ross of 120 Sports this week and said the reason she didn’t take the fight against Cyborg at UFC 198 was due to a timing issue. As Holm explained, she was still hoping to secure an immediate title rematch against Miesha Tate.

“I was just kind of holding on to see if I could get the rematch for the belt,” Holm said. … “I’m not against fighting Cyborg. It just didn’t seem like the right time.”

Holm continued, explaining that the 135 pound or 140 pound weight class is not an issue with her like it appears to be with several of the other bantamweight contenders in the UFC women’s division. As Holm explains, she’ll fight Cyborg at 135 or 140 pounds.

“I’m not even stuck on the 135 compared to the 140 stuff,” Holm said. “It’s not really a big thing for me.”

“In boxing, I fought in three weight classes,” Holm said. “I’m not gonna say that I’m against going at 140. I actually think Cyborg might able to do 135. Who knows? But that’s definitely something that could be an option for the future. I’m actually really happy for her victory. I really like Cyborg. I think she’s a great gal.”
