Houston Alexander is BACK! After a long, four-year hiatus from the world of combat sports, Alexander returned and absolutely obliterated Wes Combs in the first round of the fight.

The combat sports world last saw Alexander in 2017, when he lost back-to-back fights against Rakim Cleveland in both Primus FC and Extreme Challenge. However, the former UFC and Bellator fighter is apparently back to his best following said incredible knockout over Combs.

Alexander is unquestionably one of the most experienced veterans of the MMA world, having enjoyed extensive stints in both the UFC and Bellator. Alexander actually made his UFC debut at UFC 71, all the way back in 2007 with a win against Keith Jardine. The card that night was headlined by Chuck Liddell and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson.

It was a very back-and-forth encounter for what lasted of the first round, before Alexander absolutely pulverized Combs with a right hook followed by some nasty ground-and-pound to win the fight. It is very clear that 49-year-old Alexander is out to prove that age is just a number.

With that monstrous finish over Combs, Alexander has very much sent a message that he is still a threat to any would-be opponents at light heavyweight. With this return to form, could this be the beginning of a run for Alexander in the world of BKFC?

Who do you think Houston Alexander should fight next?

The UFC hype machine is crucial in the development and promotion of new superstars, something the promotion seems to be lacking in the early going of 2018.

While some of these uber-hyped fighters have gone on to big things in the sport of MMA, many more have fallen by the wayside, never living up to the lofty expectations the UFC and fight fans placed upon them.

Sometimes it’s the fighters who hype themselves up to almost unattainable levels, other times the fans or promoters. Still, the result is always the same, and almost never ends well.

We broke down the eight worst hype train derailments below, so check them out and let us know what you think.

8. Sage Northcutt

While Northcutt’s young age could eventually preclude him from this list, the amount of hype he garnered following his successful UFC debut ultimately made for a deflating hype train derailment.

Northcutt had and has the perfect appeal for a UFC hype job; blonde hair, ridiculously chiseled physique, a fan-friendly striking game, and a sort of charming naïveté made him easy to promote. He TKO’d his inaugural UFC opponent in a minute flat, but from there the wheels began falling off of this hype train.

The first sign that Northcutt might not be the world-beater we thought he was was in his third Octagon appearance, where the young Texas native submitted to an arm-triangle choke against the unheralded Bryan Barbarena in 2016. Then, in what amounted to a battle of hyped-up prospects, Mickey Gall submitted him with a rear-naked choke, prompting fans and pundits to question Northcutt’s submission defense and overall potential.

At just 22 years old with a 10-2 MMA record, Northcutt could absolutely turn it around and become a contender within the next few years. However, the UFC’s attempt to hype and push him into relevancy so quickly obviously worked against him.

Time will tell whether or not Northcutt will live up to the hype first placed upon him back in 2015.

In a move likely to clean up the roster and free some money for free agents like Rory MacDonald, Bellator MMA has parted ways with seven fighters, including former title challenger Dave Jansen.

According to a report by MMAjunkie, Jansen, Mike Richman, Mikkel Parlo, Raphael Butler, Houston Alexander, Isao Kobayashi and Thiago Goncalves Jambo have all been released.

Jansen (20-4) fought for the Bellator title against then-champion Will Brooks, suffering his first loss in seven fights at that time. He also was bested by top contender Marcin Held after the Brooks loss.

Richman is currently serving a two-year suspension after failing a drug test, while Jambo announced his retirement recently after dropping his promotional debut.

Alexander is a former UFC fighter who has gone 16-14-1 over his career, but just 1-3-1 with Bellator. Parlo and Butler each won four of their bouts with Bellator.

Freak Show Fight of the Day: James Thompson vs. Houston Alexander Added to Bellator 129

As the hilariously self-aware promotion of James Thompson vs. Eric Prindle (see above) already showed us, Bellator has shifted gears from the “toughest tournament in sports” to a more freakshow-centric form of MMA under The Coker Era, one which fans both casual and hardcore can enjoy. We could not be happier with this development, as any throwback to the late 90’s/early aughts of MMA is pretty much our bread and butter (that pathetic Bonnar-Ortiz brawl not included).

Forging ahead with their freak show narrative, Bellator has booked a heavyweight contest between James “The Colossus” Thompson and Houston “Get the F*ck off Facebook” Alexander for the main card of Bellator 129, which goes down on October 17 at the Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

While Thompson has spent the majority of his career getting wrecked by everyone from Aleksander Emelianenko to Butterbean, he will actually be riding a four fight win streak into Bellator 129, his longest such streak since 2005. Thompson also impressed in his Bellator debut, pounding out Prindle en route to a first round TKO at Bellator 121. The 42 year old Alexander, on the other hand, has gone 1-1 since signing on with Bellator last year, dropping a decision to Vladimir Matyushenko at Bellator 99 before scoring a second round doctor stoppage TKO over Matt Uhde at Bellator 117 in April.

While typically calling the light heavyweight division his home, Alexander has actually fought at heavyweight once before, defeating the late Sherman Pendergarst via TKO due to leg kicks back in 2009.

So yeah, two aging journeymen with questionable chins are going to throw leather until one of them falls over. In Iowa. In less than a month. MARK YOUR CALENDARS, FUCKERS.
